THE IP IP C IE NIX • • Lincoln-West High School ClevelandOhio Volume XI Tenth Anniversary SCHOOL 1 Welcome To Our Alew Principal Mr. Sampson A year is a space in time, it has no significance without events and activities. A yearbook is such a record of the activities and events that have enriched the lives of those involved. This yearbook should etch into our memories many precious moments and many delightful experiences we have all shared at Lincoln-West High School. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be a part of these activities and the memories we share together. The school is important, but the individuals are our most treasured possessions. trust that as the future unfurls we will have used our experiences here to provide us with the necessary skills required to become productive and useful citizens of our great country. Each of you have played a part in making our school and community a place loved, respected, and cherished by those this book is dedicated to honor. The improvement displayed by the L-W team through the weeks of hard work and dedication dedication was phenomenal. Highlights were the victories over rivals Glenville and West-Tech, 34-26 and 28-13. The victory over Tech was the first since 1973 and secured a spot in the schools trophy case for the Chuck Bilardo Memorial Helment. There were numerous school records set during the 1980 81 season including most points scored in a game (34 versus Glenville) total offensive yards gained in a game (480 versus Collinwood) Seniors Jeff Clay, Alan Phillips and Ken Stanback were highly successful1 in this year. Jeff Clay was named All North Senate defensive linebacker and was voted by area coaches to the All Sun West second team. Alan Phillips' performance at Quarterback earned him All North Senate honors and fifth place in the Greater Cleveland area for toal yards passing (1,084). This is part of the teachers's desire to help her students understand many aspects of life. Their concern is not just the the beauty and ceremony of the actual wedding but the events leading up to it and the events that develop after that all important moment. This year like the past years everything went off perfectly and was something that everyone is the school took great delight in. The brides wore lovely gowns and were beautiful, the grooms wore full dress suits and were handsome, the wedding party performed as though they had done this many times. The table was set with a genuine wedding cake and the guests enjoyed every about it. Thank you Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Boneburg you ladies did it again. Remember the ceremonies were not real. Success of a football season is not determined alone by the team's record of wins and losses. Success has much more meaning than that. Comradship, determination, excitement, pride and sportsmanship are aspects that create a successful season. To raise money for the group they staged a series of very successful Roller Skating Parties at the USA Roller Ring. This provided not only badly needed money for the girls' uniforms, but a great time for the school. They deserve their ranking of Number One. Everyone agrees. The Lincoln West WOLVERINE BASKETBALL TEAM coached by Jim Slatinsky finished the year with an 8-11 record. Wolverine fever started slowly as the Wolves lost their first two games to St. Ignatius 88-51 and East High 68-46. When things looked pretty bleak Coach Slatinsky heated up the Wolverines fever as his team won the next five in a row. It started with a victory at Collin-wood 66-53 then Parma came to L-W to be terned back by a tenacious Wolverine defense 71 -43 Then the game of the year. John Hay came into the game with a 5 - 0 record and a string of numer ones in the PlainDealer top 50. It was a close game all the way the game was tied at 69 with just five big seconds left to play. The season record in no way tells the story. This year it was 12 wins and 6 losses. That super leader Miss Peggy Palumbo stated that it was a rewarding season from the standpoint of development in new players, and in the teamwork shown between old and new players. Tri-Captains Laurie Wotowiec (MVP), Tamika Jones (Most improved) and Evie Williams will be greatly missed . In addition outstanding events of the year were Tri-Senate Champs. Tamika Jones set a new school record with 35 rebounds in a single game. All city selections Tamika Jones and Evie Williams, with Tamika making the Dream Team. Who knows what honors our girls will have for us next season. Wait and See. BASKETBALL 27 As a year draws to a close one of the special events to take place is the Varsity Banquet. This gives coaches the opportunity to thank their players publicly, and it also gives the athletes an equal opportunity to say thank you. This year the banquet was held at the Stadium Club. A fine dinner, some short after dinner speeches, and a lot friendship and admiration. It is really one of those special times in a students high school life that will long be remembered and held in a special place in ones memories. Coaches and athletes alike put in a lot of time effort and hard work to give our school the teams we have. While winning is great it isn't all because sometimes the margin between winning and losing is very small - what counts is to have been there all all. 28 VARSITY BANQUET Athletes Reflect On Season While Their Coaches Show Their Pride VARSITY BANQUET 29 MORE BASKETBALL The Wolves thrc the ball inside to Center Bob Crawfordwho turned and threw a hook shot for the victory by a score of 71-69 over the number one team in the city. Sadly our coach did not finish out his year at L-W, we hope we will get lucky and he'll be back with us next year. Good luck seniors good luck coach and team. Drill Team Shows Their Style And Class 32 DRILL TEAM The Lincoln West WOLVERINE DRILL TEAM was the bringing together of boys and girls, black and white of all nationalities workinn together with only one idea in mind. That idea to bring willing students of all races together to show other schools the spirit and pride and dignity Lincoln West students have always had. With thirteen students to represent them this drill team became known as the Master Blaster Wolverine Drill Team. With the help and encouragement of our adviser Mr. Hubert West the shape of drill teams of the future has been set. Highlights of the year were becoming 2nd place Champs and a showing of our style on Channel 8. Not too bad for the first year. Wait until you see us in 81 82. This outstanding junior hit 507 for the season. He made all Scholastic. Gordon Miller catcher and another Jr. hit almost 500. The Diamond Nine started out well and at one point in the season were 500. But the fickle finger of fate had its way in more than one avenue because as the season closed it is rumored that Baseball will be no more in Cleveland Public School. They proved this when the American Red Cross came to find it yearly blood doners. The BLOODMOBILE is one of the few times in the year when students have an opportunity to give for the sake of helping with no thoughts of something in return. Our hats are off to those generous and brave students who willing gave their share of blood. It is not an easy thing to do and the fact they have aided someone certainly is reward enough. The Society stands for Character Leadership, Service, and Scholarship. This is a very difficult organization to be elected to, but those students who become members walk with pride. These are the students that the entire school recognizes as having done an outstanding job. The ceremony this year to induct new members was a very lovely one. Mrs. Barbara Bratton, Adviser has maintained a high level of dignity with regard to the NHS. This is reflected in the attitude that memBers have about the group and the attitude that the school has about them. The standards they set are high but to those students who set their sights upward they can be reached. This event was put on by Senior Advisers Mrs. Helene Cushcnan and Miss Dolores Lescr, and Principal of the Unit Mr. Wes Wittich. The music was straight out of the 1950's and the attire was to. It is amazing how many students must have been studying dancing with their mothers or dads. The Twist, The Stroll, Mash Potato, and Swim were the efforts of the evening. Everyone seemed to enjoy those Golden Oldies. With regret the Senior Advisers said a private good bye to the Seniors of 1981. Derbies and jersies made up the attire for the evening. But slapstick and silliness really got the party underway. Not willing to break with a very popular tradition, many Lincoln West seniors showed up for the parly and basketball game which followed. Wearing their derbies with the signatures of at least half the graduating class the seniors constantly shouted. Gimme a S Gimme a E Gimme a N Gim-mie a I Gimme a O Gimme a R Gimme a S. What's it spell? SENIORS louder SEN- IORS. The highlight of the evening was the basketball game which pitted Lincoln West against Collinwood. Those in the stands seemed to be having more fun than the players. Juniors and seniors tried to outshout one another with cries of EIGHTY-ONE and EIGHTY-TWO. Pizza, Pepsi and strawberry cake were all provided at the pre-game party which helped to make it a memorable evening for all. O. When you put together a yearbook you see many pictures of the years you've spent in school and you have the memories to go with each picture. Through those pictures you remember all the times spent laughing with friends and crying when it was time to leave them. You remember the teachers who guided you so carefully through three of the hardest years of your life. Through this yearbook you remember it all and when someone asks you what school it's from you can proudly answer Lincoln-West .
