LINCOLN-WAY IN REVIEW In I95I fhe cifizens residing wifhin fhe lvliolcena, Franlcforf, New Lenox and lvlanhaffan communifies vofed decisively fo form fheir own high school disfricf. The following year if was m-y mosf pleasanf experience fo be selecfed as fheir educafional leader fo assisf in esfablishing fhe new school. This challenge has been mosf reward- ing fo me and I sincerely frusf, mufually beneficial. From fhis unique beginning wifh an enrollmenf of 368 sfudenfs and fwenfy-six feachers, our family has grown fo 74I sfudenfs wifh a sfaff of forfy-fwo. Even greafer expansion will confinue in fhe fufure requiring consfanf building and curriculum revisions. Previously, fhe curricular funcfions of fhe secondary school were devofed exclusively fo subiecf maffer confenf. Today, we believe sfrongly fhe curriculum musf go beyond The classroom sfudies. Currenf developmenfs in The wider use of communicafion media, new educafional equipmenf, and beffer sfaff ufilizafion have all played an imporfanf parf in fhe planning and design of fhe addifion being feafured in fhis edifion of fhe Aegis. Tremendous improvemenfs in building design and feaching fechniques have been developed during fhe pasf few years. The Lincoln-Way Board of Educafion has successfully fried fo lceep abreasf of fhese new frends and provide for fhe necessary equipmenf in order fo rneef fhe educafional requiremenfs of all fhe sfudenfs. Revolufionary feaching aids in fhe modern language laborafory were made available fhrough fhe parfial assisfance of fhe Nafional Defense Educafion Acf. Sfudenfs are now able fo rogress according fo fheir capabilifies and are rewarded according fo fhieir accomplishmenfs. In fhe pasf, Iisfening and speaking were frequenfly omiffed from The usual learning sequence. Now our sfudenfs can progress as rapidly as fheir falenfs and efforfs permif wifhouf fhe usual handicaps. Lincoln-Way's new all-purpose room is serving as a focal poinf for fhe schools feam feaching operafion. If is easily expanded fo encompass large groups of several classes or can be parfifioned off info smaller individual sfudy groups. This flexibilify malces possible a wide variefy of ofher acfivifies as well. Social funcfions are frequenfly scheduled. large dinners for oufside groups, and daily uses by over one-half of fhe sfudenfs for fheir daily lunches. Nexf year fhis large area will be ufilized for several regular classes in general science. Our new addifion included an ulfra-modern Vocafional Ag deparfmenf. Lincoln-Way has one of fhe Iargesf enrollmenfs in agriculfure of any secondary school in Norfhern Illinois. The former farm shop area was added 'Io fhe Indusfrial Arfs de- parfmenf and enabled a modern course in elecfronics fo be added fo fhe curriculum. Subsfanfial aid was received under fhe Nafional Defense Educafion Acf for fhis equipmenf. along wifh fhe language laborafory and considerable scienfific equipmenf. The original combined music cleparfmenf soon proved foo small fo provide for fhe needs of The inferesfed sfudenfs. The beaufiful addilion now complefely solves fhis problem for many years. Ample space has been planned for bofh indivi- dual insfrucfion along wifh fhe large combined groups. As Lincoln-Way's enrollmenf increased, addifional facilifies were required for fhe physical educafion and afhlefic program. Our new consfrucfion has greafly helped fo provide for fhese needs giving much more flexibilify for all 'rhe boys and girls in school. If is sfrongly believed fhaf fhe Lincoln-Way High School is an example of how a building can aid fhe educafional program along wifh fhe morale of fhe sfudenfs. The cheerfulness among fhe sfudenfs seems fo be infecfious, adding fo fhe qualify of fhe work done by fhe pupils and fheir feachers, Q HUNTER CHAPMAN, Principal B.A., Shurfleff College M.A., Universify of Illinois ,,.W,gL 5 E wwe S ALICE GORMAN BA..
