Easenbmfidf Getting out this volume of the Aegis has some- how been a rougher job than usual. So many out-of- the-ordinary things have occurred during the year to make progress difficult. First, Lincoln-Way, like much of the nation, was hit by the Asiatic flu in October. Pictures were scheduled to be taken right at the peak of the epidemic, resulting in the absence of 150 students. We managed to get the make-ups later in November along with some club pictures, even then not without some conflict. The third round of club pictures was scheduled during the most severe blizzard of the season, with Editor . Assistant Editor Art Editors . Business Manager the final four organizations posing only a week be- fore the fatal deadline in February. Another unusual problem confronted the staff. For the first time in L-W's history, two teachers left at the end of the first semester. It was too late to get photographs of the new teachers so unfortunately we could list only their names, subjects, etc. Despite all the headaches there has been a lot of enioyment in publishing our fourth yearbook. For you, the owners, our hope is that you too shall derive pleasure from it in years to come. STAFF T958 AEGIS . Tom Dunham . . Vivienne Eisenbrandt Darwin De Camp, Tammy Trump . . . . STUDENT CCUNCIL The Student Council affords students a voice in the government of the school and coordinates its many activities. The Homecoming activities and the magazine sales campaign were under the sponsorship of the Student Council. A iuke box for the relaxation and enioyment of students during the lunch periods was provided and maintained. Through the Student Council, activity funds were made available for pur- chasing the school station wagon. Routine iobs in- cluded allocating concessions, working on school rules, assisting with Step-Up Day, conducting Student Council Week, and developing materials for several group guidance discussions. Barnett, J. Eden, G. White, W. Louffer, B. Bruce, C. Otto Two assembly programs were arranged by the Student Council. Joe Anthony, orphan Korean boy now a citizen of the U. S., told of some of the experiences he had endured in his native country. Mr. Warkow, coordinator of student councils at the state level, addressed the L-W Students on the general topic of developing a philosophy of life. OFFICERS President . .... As the club was newly-created, much of the first semester was spent in constructing a constitution. After it was approved by the Student Council, the club was able to go ahead with its many plans for trips and activities to broaden their historical background. This select group is comprised of upper classmen only who have had or are taking one of the history courses offered in our curriculum. KNIGHTS liflfi if fi- A 3 X? A X' . ff? R. Simmons, F. Lane, T. This organization was privileged to be the first to present a program in the new audi- torium. The program, presented on the day follow- ing Lincoln's birthday, was a style show contrasting the clothing worn during Lincoln's day and present day apparel. The Coketail party, one of the annual events sponsored by F. H. A., was given much time and effort by all the girls. They assisted in providing the refreshments at the Christmas Vespers Tea. The Freshman float, family night, pot luck dinner, and the civil defense program were among the many activities on this year's program. Zim- merman Conventions were big on the agenda for the F. B. L. A. this year with groups going to the Northern and Central area meetings and to the state convention at Springfield. Vivienne Eisenbrandt was elected first vice president of the Northern area. One of the big projects of the F. B. L. A. is the operation of the bookstore which provides most of the student supplies. Instead of dashing outt o the nearby 5 and 'IO as students in so many schools do, Lincoln-Way's students depend on the bookstore for their immediate supply needs. A good deal of planning and record keeping is involved. We're the Future Nurses of Lincoln-Way We go for things in a great big way. We visit the hospitals where soon we'II be Working and training for our future to be. During the year the Future Nurses visited Wesley Memorial Hospital. A registered nurse from Silver Cross came and spoke to the girls and answered many of their questions about train- ing. Some of their recreational activities included roller skating and swimming parties. During the March of Dimes some of the girls assisted by collecting for the polio drive. Row I: B. Johnson, C. The team was led by Del Yunker and Ron Fredin who were elected to the All-Conference second team at center and quarterback. All the departing seniors deserve to be given much credit and will certainly be missed next season. The Little Knights ended their gridiron season with a record of 2 wins, 5 losses and l tie game. They bought themselves new outfits With money they acquired, By selling many large, white mums That students bought like fire. The bonfires were given jointly By Frosh-Soph and Varsity alike, And aroused the spirit of the gang Which gave the teams their tight. Lincoln-Way was paced throughout the season by three veterans, Woody Zitter and Dave McGuire, whose outstanding leadership inspired the others, and Ken Zitter. Next year's Knights will miss Ed Zitter and Harry Johnson also. Ed had a five match winning streak and did an all-around good iob. Harry filled in for Woody Zitter, when he was sidelined in January with a knee infection. Harry won four matches in that short interval. However, whether this loss of four boys will be offset by the fine freshman and sophomore prospects remains to be seen. Bill Zelko took second place in conference and Bill Rogers won the conference frosh-soph champion- ship. Freshman Tony Santerelli posted a very creditable 9-5 varsity record. Other underclassmen who wrestled varsity regularly were Smith, Stanek, Hammond and Grybash. With these boys returning along with juniors, Charvat and Zitter, these should form the nucleus of a very good team in '58-'59. Co-Captain Woody Zitter chalked up a 21-4 record in regular season matches and in tournament competition. He again distinguished Lincoln-Way by going to the State Finals for the third successive year. Three of his four losses were received in state competition. After his third successive sectional championship, he wound up the season with a fourth place finish against challengers from 115 schools. His loss was to Jim Thomas of Proviso on riding time, 2-1. Jim went on to take first place. SEASON'S RECORD Lincoln-Way ,,,,. ,..... 21 Kankakee .,,,,. ,,.....29 Lincoln-Way ..,,, ,,,,. 2 5 Evergreen Park ..... The Class of 1958 has a distinction unrivaled by any other class, either past or future. We are the first graduating class to have completed four whole years at Lincoln-Way. Looking back to that September day in 1954 when our school opened its doors for the first time, it seems a long time since we were Freshmen. We were perhaps the luckiest Freshies L-W will ever know, because that year the upper classmen were every bit as green as we, and all learned the ropes together. When we began our tour year stay, our class numbered l38. Through the years a number have dropped out, but with the addition of transfers from other schools, we are the largest graduating class yet.
