Since early in September the 1956 AEGIS staff has been working diligently to produce the finest yearbook possible. We have endeavored to recapture the highlights of the past year by means of photography, art and copy. All year long up to the final deadline, the editorial and photography staff have been busy planning layout, arranging pictures, and writing copy. The art editor supplied the division pages, no small task. At intervals throughout the year the business staff accepted the payments of subscribers, kept their records up to date and arranged final distribution of the books. The boys responsible for sports kept complete records of scores in all athletic events. This has been a busy year but an enjoyable one. We sincerely hope that you will cherish this 1956 AEGIS as much as the staff does the long hours spent in getting it ready for you. Phi-Chem Association The P. C. A. is an active organization made up of junior and senior students of physics and chemistry. It is associated with the Illinois junior Academy of Science and National Science Clubs of America. One of the first enterprises of the club this year was the Little Red Book , a directory listing names, addresses and phone numbers of each student and staff member. The science banquet, the Chem-Magic Show, and a field trip to Champaign all required the full cooperation of the members. Another highlight was the visit of Dr. Sutton, well-known physics lecturer and demon- strator and author of many books on science. Everyone completed a project of his own choosing which was on exhibit at the annual science open house in the spring. Some were selected to compete at the district and state meets. P. C. It is a worthwhile and constructive club for any boy enrolled in agriculture. Members of the FFA keep busy all year long, even during the months when school is not in session. Representatives attended the national convention at Kansas City and the state convention at Springfield. During the summer several boys exhibited projects at fairs including the State Fair at Springfield. Field trips to the Purina Feed Niills in St. Louis and the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago were taken. The boys participated in public speaking contests and the Ford tractor contest and sponsored a garden seed sale. Future Homemokers of America F. H. A. had the distinction of being the largest club in school, with an enrollment of I27 girls. Though divided into separate sections, the two groups shared their activities. The girls entertained F. H. A. girls from another school at an Around-the-World dinner in February. In the fall they served at the I. A. H. S. P. meeting when Lincoln-Way entertained the Wil-Ro-Kee division. The club contributed to charities by sponsoring a war orphan and giving a food basket at Thanksgiving. The girls had a lot of fun at Daddy Date Night . Box socials and taffy apple sales helped put needed cash in the treasury. Its purposes are the encouragement of a more thorough know- ledge of the life, customs and language of the ancient Romans and the promotion of a better understanding and more friendly relationship among students of Latin. One of the club's first activities was a field trip to the Crerar Library and Art Institute in Chicago. In March, as their contribution to the chorus carnival, members allowed themselves to be auctioned off as slaves by their energetic First Consul. Other activities included a Christmas party and a Valentine party. Most important of all was the Roman Banquet, at which faculty members and second year students were served and entertained by the first year slaves . At the club meetings entertainment consisted of Latin songs, plays, Latin games. and the reading of Latin magazines. 2 -Vi 251 Officers V- R i llill lleidrieh . . . Lictor Raydene Cool-4 . . As an infant organization the club realizes it has a long way to go before it will be functioning as smoothly and efficiently as it would like. In future years the club hopes to sponsor a horse show and to set up a regular schedule through which its members will be able to rent horses , , from a nearby stable. This year social meetings during which films on horses and horse- manship were shown, a Christmas party and a trip to the International Livestock exposition and Horse Show were some of the activities in which the club participated during the year. The Biology Club was organized this year under the supervision of members of the science department. The primary goal of the club was to promote an interest in biology through the use of the scientific method. A field trip took the club to the Coal City quarry to collect speci- men. The required projects took on such aspects of nature as hay infusion, the study of bees and the mounting of bugs in plastic cubes. The projects are intended to help the student to better understand biology and his environment. Seated: Penny Spiewak, Wendell Anderson, Ron Fredin, Dave Gilmore, Henry Barnett. CRQSS CQUNTRY The first Lincoln-Way cross country runners brought home the Conference Championship trophy this year. The winning combination consistedof Mark Schellenberg, Le Yerneklark, Stanley liruns, jerry Collins Tom Rowswell, and Terry Barnes. This was the first major athletic award earned by l--W athletes. The first victory came from the hands of the tough Carl Sandburg harriers when the Knights edged them out 27 to 28, with Mark edging out Schellenberg for a close one-two punch. The Knights' only defeat came to them at Reavis, where without the aid of two regulars, Schellenberg and Collins, the Knights ran their hearts out only to meet defeat by 4 points. The last regular season meet, held here at L-W, proved more than a satisfactory showing, having the Knights take the first four positions, spearheaded by Schellenberg, Mark, Bruns, and Collins. Final score was L-W 19 and Carl Sandburg 57. The conference meet was held at Carl Sandburg with four of the six conference schools attending. There were L-W, Oak Lawn, Reavis, and host Carl Sandburg. The Knights won the meet in fine fashion with Sch- ellenberg, Mark, and Bruns finishing fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively out of the twenty eight individual competitors. They were followed by Collins finishing 9th and Rowswell taking 11th. Lincoln-Way took first with 37 points and Oak Lawn followed with 40. Reavis was third while Sandburg placed last. ...4 .av-M First Victory Highlights Season A3 ' fi wa- 7'1aS? ,-S Zies. .5 I , nf . - , 4 . .f , ' ' ' ,V -W 'Y-rw Q ' -A .', tr' - ' 1542. - ' -5 Q, Af- , .-, ,- r , . fi .,.. , , .. , . ,..,..:-,. VARSITY FGCDTBALL Looking backward on the football season a good many bright spots are visible and there is much to be proud of. The boys' conference record at the end of the season stood at one victory against five defeats. The only win was the thrilling victory over Evergreen Park. But the Knights are looking forward to next year, when they figure to be the dark horse in the conference race with a good experienced group of boys returning. They certainly put out their best effort and showed fine spirit throughout the season. A great improvement was also shown as they put up very good battles against Rich, Reavis, Evergreen and Oak Lawn. Credit is due to the graduating seniors who did a fine job and will surely be missed next year. Ed Woodward represented the Knights as he was elected All- Cfonference end in the Southwest Suburban Conference. llalfback Morris Wade and center john Weber received honorable mention. FROSH-SCDPI-I FGOTBALL Bolstered by several husky freshmen, the holdover Sophomores this year went out in full force yearning for victory. I-light games were schedu- led in contrast to last season's seven. Of the eight they were able to claim top honors in two and tie a third against Sandburg. VARSITY BASKETBALL Plainfield Peotone Evergreen Park Bremen Mooseheart Rich Sandburg Lemont Oak L awn Lemont Although the Knights this year did not enjoy a winning season, the '55-56 edition was tremendously improved over the team Lincoln-Way fielded in ,54-55. Five senior boys returned to the court this year to fight the battles on the hardwood. They were supported by eight able under- class teammates, seven juniors and one sophomore. The individual players were given many opportunities to play because the coach did not select a permanent A-team or B-team. It can be said that L-W athletics hit an all time peak on February 23 when the Knights smashed Lemont 60-52 in the Carl Sandburg district tourney. On the following evening, the Red and Black stayed right with the powerful Eagles for three quarters and almost walked off with their first basketball trophy, The Knights' supporters may well take heart in the Sandburg an- nouncer's words at the presentation of the trophies when he stated, This Lincoln-Way squad was the most improved team I have ever seen. Looking forward to next year, we see three of the starting five returning. It is noteworthy that this year's junior varsity went undefeated in two conference tilts. So the horizon looks very brilliant for a winning season in '56-57.
