FOREWORD Lincoln University, sprawling the paraphernalia of a hundred years of learning down its Jefferson City hill, now moves forward into a new era. As we enter this second century, much of the past remains with us. The new science building, appropriately named Founders Hall, stands be- side doomed Memorial Hall. A beautiful new student union building stands across from old Young Hall. In other locations about the campus, the erec- tion of a social science and a military science building are more indicators of the New Lincoln. But the New Lincoln is more than concrete, steel and bricks, the New Lincoln is also flesh and blood, hopes and dreams. Thus, for us the New Lincoln is not really new, but is as old as the dreams of the black soldiers of the 62nd and 65th Missouri Colored Infantries. And so long as there are men with hopes and dreams, each year will find them building a New Lincoln. Oliver Holt, 260 pound tackle from Birming- ham, Alabama enjoyed one of his finest sea- sons as a Tiger. Henry Burnette. junior tackle, is noted for his gressive hard-nose football play. Season Summary 1967 was the worst season for the Tigers in Coach Reed ' s 19 years as head coach. The Tigers suffered through a 3-6-0 football campaign, but Coach Reed remained optimistic. The squad had 21 freshmen and sophomores and only six juniors and four seniors. A young squad as this was expected to make mistakes and the season was one of painful experiences. Seven players were lost at the start of the season and injury plagued the team the entire season. In every game except the first, at least three starters were out with injuries. With no depth to overcome the injuries, the Tigers found the going rough against strong opponents. Thirty-three of the 37 players of this year ' s squad will return to Coach Reed as he begins his 20th year as head coach in 1968. The center position was in the capable hands of these three players: Melvin Cross, Henry Rome, and William Avery. I :% ! !§ Charles Bolden gains a big first down in the second half action against Parsons College. Interior Linemen: Willie Smith, guard; Glenn McKinney, guard; and Lester Thompson, guard. .K- ... ' ■ - Four Seniors Defense is the silent, hard-hitting force behind an of- fense. Lincoln ' s defense was no exception for anchoring the defense were the only four seniors on the squad. Those seniors who wore the Blue Tiger uniforms for the last time were Donald Bates, linebacker; Henry Rome, linebacker; Roger Wood, tackle; and James Sullivan, tackle. Bates, a 215 lb. jarring tackier from Marrieta, Georgia closed out four brilliant years of play as cap tain of this year ' s squad. He saw duty as a defensive linebacker and offensive fullback. A sure and hard-nose player, he ' ll be missed by the team in the years ahead. Henry Rome, 210 lb center and linebacker hailed from Columbus, Georgia. As co-captain of this year ' s squad he collaborated with Bates to give the Tigers one of the best linebacking combinations in the country. Roger Wood has seen duty as an end and tackle since coming to Lincoln from Alexanderia, Virginia. His rough and tough play earned him the raves of professional football scouts and the respect of opponents. James Sullivan has been a defensive standout at tackle since his freshman year. A natural at tackle, Sullivan was the anchor around which the Tiger ' s defensive unit revolved. A native of Hope, Arkansas, he is a Health and Physical Education major. f f J0P % K Head Coach Dwight Reed, a former end at the University of Minnesota, gives some advice to the squad mem- bers who play this position for the Tigers. They are: Earl Coachman, Chris Middleton, Don Daugherity, Homer Cavitte, and Gahe Coleman. Many Talented Ends on Squad End ]im Kirchner is a math major from Jefferson City who earned his second letter as a Tiger this season. Leading receiver for the season was Joe Berryman, a promising freshman from Houston, Texas. Offensive Stars Albert Miller fires a pass against Wiley College as Tigers rolled to 26- 19 victory. Another Great Year for Track For almost two decades now. Coach Dwight Reed and the Lincoln track team have been gaining na- tional recognition and tame. The track season of 1967 was but another great chapter in the illustri- ous history of track at Lincoln. The 1967 track squad captured the Tigers ' third consecutive NCAA Midwest Regional title, their fourth in live years, and walked oft with honors in major track meets all across the nation. Hampered bv the lack of outstanding sprinters, at a school that has a tradition tor great sprinters and outstanding relay teams. Coach Reed turned to Field events to create this chapter for Lincoln ' s track hsitory. But undoubtedly, the 196 season will be remembered as marking the close of the collegiate careers of ti e of the greatest stars in Lincoln ' s history. It is thus fitting that we have devoted these pages of this yearbook to taking a last glimpse at the brilliant collegiate carters of Emanuel Belland.
