1  THE SENIOR CLASS OF LINCOLN UNIVERSITY LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PENNSYLVANIA PRESENTS THE LION 1977 RANDY BRYANT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Dedication We the class of 77, take great pride in dedicating this yearbook to the Reverend Samuel Govan Stevens, who has been the Lincoln University Chaplain and Professor of Religion since 1951. During the years which we have spent at Lincoln, the spiri- tual guidance which we have received from Reverend Stevens has been most helpful and appreciated. In these tumultu- ous times, we, as young adults, find the unselfish, experienced counsel of a man like Reverend Stevens a welcomed gift. Although, Reverend Stevens is now in re- tirement, we continue to benefit from the messages which he has given us. There- fore, with sincere appreciation, we dei- cate the 1977 LION to the Reverend Sam- uel G. Stevens. To the Class of 1977 — The motto of many educational institutions is Enter to Learn; Go Forth to Serve. Although this is not the motto of Lincoln University, throughout the years students and graduates of the institution have more than lived up to the challenge of the statement. With this thought in mind, we come to the realization that the first part of the quotation is just about to end. But the second part is far more important for us. For the past four years we have absorbed whatever Lincoln had to offer us, but now that our period of absorption is almost over, we must consider putting into practice what we have learned and help the communities in which we will reside in whatever ways we can. We have been through a lot since we entered Lincoln in September, 1973. As we recount some of the events, we see them in an entirely different perspective. The first event to cast its shadow over us was the Watergate break-in, which became a very controversial issue and colored everyone's thinking. For the first time for many of us political ideologies suddenly became important, and get rid of Nixon dotted everyone's conversation. Somewhere in the middle of the Watergate scandal the press got relief from covering the event when Patty Hearst grabbed the head- lines in all the newspapers across the country by getting herself kidnapped. And of course there is no way we can forget the Energy Crisis — if indeed there really was one! Suddenly the price of gas soared to what seemed to be astronomical heights, and filling stations were forced to ration the little gas they had. Closer to home, we were asked to keep our heat down and our lights off as much as possible. As we look back, we can recall a freshman year full of fun — and problems. But somehow we survived and returned the next year, ready to start a new year as wise fools. And some of us came back again and again, striving hard to remain together. Now that it is almost over, I hope that we do not look upon our depar- ture from Lincoln as an ending, but rather as a new beginning — an introduction to a beautiful but cold world outside. As we go our separate ways, I would like to leave one last thought with you, Don't forget that the same people you meet on the way up are the same people you meet on the way down. It won't hurt to be polite and respectful to everyone. I wish for all of you the best that life has to offer, and I look forward to seeing all of you again in the not-too-distant future. Sincerely, To the Class of 77: When we first entered Lincoln as freshmen, the experiences that we hoped to encounter were only dreams. Although our dreams are now becoming realities, the memories will still linger on. The prob- lems faced at Lincoln, are minute compared to the ones we will face in the future; the dreams that were once nebulous, have become clear ... Our educational struggles have shown us that everything in life doesn't come easy. We have fought to overcome many obstacles that were in our way and I know that the obstacles we will meet in the future will not stop us. May all of us cherish the dreams and the memories that go with those dreams. I know that you will forever envision greater things to be done, building the highest tower, striving extra hard to make those dreams come true. There is a lot of life waiting to be grasped ... take advantage of it ... Always remember ... Today is the dawning of tomorrow with dreams and hopes of what will be the future of our class ... 77. Today I wonder what I can say now that has not been said while you were at Lincoln. Perhaps the one clear persistent image should be that it is not the word but the action, the living of the word, which is the true life objective. Hence, what that acidulous critic from Baltimore, H.L. Mencken, who many deficits of character and approach in my view, said remains with us: I believe that it is better to tell the truth than to lie. I believe that it is better to be free than be a slave And I believe that it is better to know than to be ignorant. If those three precepts are woven into your active life, then Lincoln has succeeded. In essence what I am asking you to examine is a view of education reaching at least back to Quintilian, whose dates are 35-98 A.D., great grammarian who insisted that education extends from the cradle to the grave and that the most important consideration for any scholar was for him to handle himself verbally. One feels that this attitude has persisted too literally into the present where we wallow in a deluge of reetoric while destructive forces seem to be moving inexorably towards our cherished institutions. Perhaps the worst outcome of this preoccupation with verbal dexterity has been its effect in degrading the sense of commitment, the confidence that you are doing something significant and worthwhile, above all the good impression that you have chosen action with humaness and intelligence. Thus we hope and expect that yours is not the experience of a disillusioned student of your time who insisted: I may have learned only two things in my four years at Harvard. The first is that an equally intelligent, rational, and valid argument can be made on all sides of any question from any and all premises. The second is that those arguments have no relationship to anything but themselves. No one wishes to think of you as out in the world graping for some redemtive sense of value. Lincoln hopefully has supplied that. The ancient Latins would never have thought of ending a farewell without some lines to accompany their readers. There is a story about an inscription in a small, nearly-deserted village in Ireland that we ask forgiveness for borrowing: DEAR LINCOLN MUST I LEAVE YOU. I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP, PERHAPS MILES TO GO TO MY LAST SLEEP. With sincerest hope for a fine future. Herman R. Branson President TO THE CLASS OF 1977: George Elliott once said Growing thought makes growing revelations. As the Class of 1977 leaves Lincoln University; may each member be fully aware that today needs more revelations of truth than ever before, but this can only be effected by continued study which is the basis of growing thought. May your class be the leader in bringing truth and human understanding to all people. You take your leave from Lincoln in an era of permanent leadership and of the fulfillment of many new developments that are still in their infancy. You will have regrets that you could not remain here for another year or two and be a part of Lincoln's continued growth, but there is also a special incentive that I hope you will respond ... to maintain a close bond with your alma mater, to give your close attention to the events that are in store for her, and your liberal support to the efforts that will be required to bring them to maturity. It was but yesterday we met in a dream. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper sond. We left high school to enter the gates of Lincoln University. On September 4, 77 became a member of the mighty Lincoln Family. Freshmen Orientation began it all. Placement tests, parties and new friends who would soon become classmates were all a part of our first week at L.U. As the months went on, our experiences were many. Under the leadership of Sherley Davis, our class president we toiled through our freshmen year. The times were rough and the excitement was plenty. Where were you the night that the lights went out and the entire campus was in total darkness? The men of 77 should all remember the fight for the wall ' And let's not forget Hansberry Hall. The women of the class of 77 were the first women to officially inhabit The Berry and the only women at Lincoln ever to have a curfew, but it did not last for long cause 77 was on its' way. 1974 was the last year of January Project an experience which we must not forget. The project was how high could you get and how long could you party. Remember those Thursday night parties which are no more. Freshmen year we sponsored our first roller skating party which has since became a class tradition. As new traditions began others such as the Homecoming Talent Shows and Greek Shows being held in the Chapel came to an end. Soon we were sophomores and Kelvin Boston became the class president. Homecoming was the high- light of the year. Labelle, Eddie Kendricks, Gil Scott Heron and 300 Years helped us jam our way through the weekend. Still the year had serious moments too. Lincoln students demonstrated at Vail Memorial Hall for better medical care and improved conditions in the cafeteria. Sophomore year became a blur and the class of 77 became upperclassmen. Junior year was a time for change. The concerts were many: Rufus, Roy Ayers and The Jimmy Castor Bunch got down in Alumni Memorial Gym. With Ronald Keene, as class president we succeeded in having the Proficiency Exam removed as a graduation requirement. Many of the changes were not so rewarding. 1976 was the last year that Reverend Stevens served as the Chaplain of Lincoln Univeristy. We will always remember him for his kindness and guidance which helped sustain us through our first years at Lincoln. We will never forget the times at Lincoln: the basketball games, the dances in the S.U.B. and those homecooked meals in the cafeteria. What about all the times we stood in line, mail lines, meal lines, and registration lines just to name a few. On May 1, we, the Class of 77 will stand in another line as we become a part of the Lincoln Alumni. Senior year is a time for reflection and preparation. Reflection on what we have been through and preparation for the years to come. We will leave wiser, prouder and much more sure of ourselves because we are and always will be a part of the Lincoln Experience. Our story is not complete, for this is not the end, but only a beginning.
