tfoiK 5 UNIVERSITY » LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Vice-President for Student Affairs November 12, 1975 TO THE BICENTENNIAL CLASS: In as much as your commencement falls during the 200th anniversary of this country, perhaps it would be appropriate for you to pause, for a moment or two, to reflect upon your experiences at Lincoln in relationship to your individual goals and objectives as well as the awesome assignment that will be placed upon you by this society. To what extent have your college experiences assisted in your total development as an individual, as a person of learning and as a human being? To what degree have you availed yourselves of the opportunities to grow intellectually; to build a sense of self worth; to develop a sense of social consciousness; to discover the world about you and its relationship to your own dreams, aspirations and needs; and to acquire the specific skills — intellectual baggage, if you will — to survive in and contribute to this terribly demanding world you are about to face? One must certainly come to grips with the past in an effort to chart the course of the future. Therefore, it is important that you objectively assess and evaluate the consumate effects of your Lincoln experience in order to make the adjustments necessary to attain personal success, whatever that means to you as an individual. You are a part of a significant and glorious tradition, in Lincoln, and you therefore have a very grave social responsibility to yourself, your Alma Mater, this nation and this society. The harsh realities of the world will soon be upon you, and it is our very sincere hope and expectation that we have adequately prepared you to assume a meaningful place in this society. 14
