GEORGE LYLE, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC INFORMATION Mr. George Lyle, the humoristic, fun loving Director of Public Relations here at Lincoln University arrived on the scene approximately three months before the class of '76. Therefore, he is a member of our class and to him we dedicate our yearbook. Mr. Lyle has helped the senior class in every way that he possibly could, especially in the production of our yearbook. The Lion Staff offers a warm Thank You in a very special way. He has added much to the entire Lincoln Community and his quality of human compassion is greatly appreciated. We, the Class of 1976 graciously dedicated our yearbook to Mr. George Lyle. 3 Lincoln University began its existence as a Theology School. To the left, is Mary Dot! Brown Chapel where quiet meditation may be sought. On the other hand, we view University Hall many of us have spent much time in contemplation there. IN MEMORIUM FLOYD RICARDO BROWN IN TRIBUTE To sweet to let go, to manly to ask for a reprieve. So it came to be, that one so soulful has departed. Maybe during the rebirth, he will rise once again, to assume his rightful throne. Laura J. Richardson β’Mvliiu'; . A SALUTE TO THE ALUMNI tribute to our forefathers. Your presence will linger on. You've made a mark in history, that reflects ye dear ol' song. Alma Mater Dear Lincoln, dear Lincoln. Thy sons will e'er be true. The golden hours we spend beneath The dear old Orange and Blue, Will live for e'er in memory; As guiding stars through life. For thee, our Alama Mater dear; We'll rise in our might For we love every inch of thy sacred soil, Every tree on thy campus green; And for thee with our might we will ever toil. That thou mightest be supreme. We'll raise thy standard to the sky, Midst glory and honor to fly. And constant and true, We will live for thee anew, Our dear old Orange and Blue. Hail! Hail! Lincoln! THE LION Deadlines, pages, copy, cropping β with all this, lots of disagreements. Time was the big- gest problem; there never seemed to be enough. Schedules made, schedules broken, not wanting to do the wrong thing, but not knowing how to do the right. All these prob- lems, and still a book has been produced and believe it or not β it's been WE DID IT!!!!!! EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Ruth Day Hargrove CO-EDITORS Cheryl Anne Ford Sandra L. From The Editor To the Graduating Class of 1976 Year after year we have traveled old Route One to Lincoln. Our years of traveling to this great institution have come to an end. Now we must search for new routes and if necessary create our own paths. We leave Lincoln with the feeling of holding a partially filled glass of water. It is half way filled, yet it is half empty. With a sigh we pack our bags full of memories and experiences that have taught us so much. Yes, Lincoln is for LEARNERS and I offer my congratulations to the SURVIVORS of 76 , for you have encountered and endured the turbulance of Lincoln's period of transition. Build your souls and attain them, the achievement of success is to be admired. Remember that the family is the key, it is the greatest achieve- ment of all. Therefore, I offer to you that which my parents gave to me, the three greatest states of consciousness man can achieve. PEACE, LOVE, UNITY. Ruth Day Hargrove Editor-in-Chief 9 THE LAST MILE Cornin' to the end of the road slowly not even surely the end draws near The times left behind are now the Good Old Days that weren't so damn good but will never be forgotten Times that sometimes hurt more than helped but experience builds β or destroys and I'm still around at least for now The distance is so far I can't see the end of it but I can't stop β I can't stand still a motionless man is an easy target The end, like most things, is a mystery never solved and frequently never seen The paths are many the way is long. Clarence E. Martin, Jr. W. Β«SS-Β LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Office of the President December 1, 1975 TO THE CLASS OF 1976: In a few months you will be leaving Lincoln after four of the most significant years in your life. No doubt that as you grow older you will look back upon this period as your hopeful college days, especially when you compare them with your present which is likely to appear as dire. I say that because man must make some bitter adjustments during the next quarter century. And you will be in the midst of it. First off, you know that this century began with about 1.5 billion people on the earth. It will close with at least 7 billion β an increase of more than fourfold in a hundred years, unprecedented. Today we are among 4 billion people. But this is not a happy 4 billion, since nearly half are chronically undernourished and some 10,000 people die of starva- tion weekly some place on this earth. What this means is that you have an especial responsibility for understanding this earth, what it can support, what its limits are, and what policies and practices are humane, supportive, and will bring the advantages of civilization to all the people on its surface. Such facts and responsibilities do not allow any of us to venture forth with an uncom- monly buoyant mood. What Lincoln has protected you from, I hope though, is your being drowned in economic and psychic debasement. I have never believed that there are any inexorable laws of historical destiny. No doubt, hard work and social commitment can meet the demands which will be made upon you. And always the Lincoln spirit will not let you undervalue reason and intelligence. ?. Farewell and may a rewarding future be yours. ifSK Sβ UNIVERSITY LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Office of the President β December 1, 1975 TO THE CLASS OF 1976: In a few months you will be leaving Lincolruafter four of the most significant years in your life. To what extent have your college experiences assisted in your total development as an individual, as a person of learning and as a human being? To what degree have you availed yourselves of the opportunities to grow intellectually; to build a sense of self worth; to develop a sense of social consciousness; to discover the world about you and its relationship to your own dreams, aspirations and needs; and to acquire the specific skills β intellectual baggage, if you will β to survive in and contribute to this terribly demanding world you are about to face? One must certainly come to grips with the past in an effort to chart the course of the future. Therefore, it is important that you objectively assess and evaluate the consumate effects of your Lincoln experience in order to make the adjustments necessary to attain personal success, whatever that means to you as an individual. You are a part of a significant and glorious tradition, in Lincoln, and you therefore have a very grave social responsibility to yourself, your Alma Mater, this nation and this society. The harsh realities of the world will soon be upon you, and it is our very sincere hope and expectation that we have adequately prepared you to assume a meaningful place in this society. 14 Consider, if you will, the world about you; upon your graduation, America is celebrating her 200th birthday. You leave Lincoln as a time when the advances of technology have far outstripped the most fertile imaginations; at a time when America's resources are uniquely abundant, and at a time when the impact of universal education has been heightened and pervasive. And yet, America is still fraueht with social problems, eco- nomic misery and general uneasiness among the populace. Your assignment then, is particularly well defined. You must strive ana fight for social justice, economic equality and political representation β viable representation β of all of America's people. Your concern must be the concern that this realize the dreams and aspirations of her people; that America, in fact, achieve the idealistic plateau upon which this nation was founded. The year 2076 must see a cleaner, stronger and purer America. It shall not be enough to say, as Reverend Calvin Morris so eloquently put it, that we are here in spite of it all. Our three hundredth birthday must be socially significant in the sense that this country has arrived and that Lincoln men and women have played inestimably significant roles in shaping the new destiny of this land. Thus, your challenge is before you. Knowing you all so well as I do, I am supremely confident that you will make your mark upon the world and in doing so achieve personal and professional satisfaction, for that is the Lincoln way. Allow me to suggest that as you leave Lincoln, you embrace and pursue George Bernard Shaw's eminently worthwhile advice: Life is no brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to the future generations. Your deeds and works will inexorably impact upon the future generations of Lincoln men and women, and you are the future of America. Congratulations and with best wishes always, I am Sincerely yours, 15 Dean Charles Wade Vice President in charge of Academic Affairs Mayo M. Here comes the freshmen class (the invincible preppies). So many strange faces. Who would ever believe that such a large class, rather the first largest class in the history of Lincoln University, would be the smallest graduating class. Yes, Fame was the game, Survivors was the name. After the first week, we were considered a party hardy, stay hi phi, mellow phi mellow, hanging touch class. We didn't need any beenies to label us freshmen; our nature was enough. Speaking of our nature, remember the battle for the wall? How many of your close friends do you remember that were wearing a cast the next day? We thought that the battle was limited to men only. But what about those rough, overfed women from Laney? Boy, were they ready to pug! But we had sense. They did the talking, and we did the walking, a B-line to our cubby holes for security. Ah! THE PROJECT. Remember Morris Hall in 1972, where the occupants for this 10 room dorm were carefully selected on the basis of__? That's right, four young college women to a cellblock in the old Gym, with cold and cold running water to cleanse the mud that clung from the incline of Laney. The number of four rose to infinite when the mice sought room and board with no fee when the days at Lincoln became cold and dark. 13 Colleges! How many of us remember being sucked into that program? What in the hell is Social Institutions? The Sociology Dept, won't even claim that course. Homecoming! Stevie Wonder, WOW! Was so-and-so's face cracked? There goes her Mr. Perfect (an upperclassman, of course) with his old lady from home. Winter is here. Where's the snow? Maybe tomorrow? We know that these old dilapidated dorms had leaky ceilings, but who'd ever think that snow would fall behind the shower curtains and in the stalls in the bathroom? End of first semester. Wow, January Projects! Only one class for the whole month of January. What a break! We don't even have to come back for January. It's a non-credit course. Feb. β end of January Projects. All those who failed or didn't complete the project sorry, but you are now in the class of '77. Second semester. Still hanging tough. Spring concert β EARTH, WIND FIRE. Sorry, but due to weather conditions the Earth is Wet, the Wind ain't Blowin' and the Rain put out the Fire. Sophomore year. No longer Preps. We now have a right to the Rendall Bench, as a matter of fact we were informed that our whole class can sit on the bench at the same time. Punched, who punched? Better yet, who didn't punch? What happened to so-and-so? He couldn't transfer? Aren't Lincoln's courses transferable? 56 Junior year β L.U.'s 1st legendary class β Who's that? The L.U. official auctioner, sizing up the class of '76. Can I get a 20, there's a bid for a 30, did I hear a 40,50 β going, going, gone! The class of '76 reached a margin of 50 out of a possible 300. Yo Brother , Yo Sister , what class are you in? 76! There's no such class! Oh, well, what ever is left of it. What! β graduation ceremonies are being held where? Behind the Snack Bar! No! At The Rose Bowl! This year we're going to keep our class out of the Infirmary. Sissy's is Quarantined!, and the Roaches have invaded the cafeteria again! Is fasting the way? Remember those alleged incidences when one person went to see the Dr. for a headache and was diagnosed for symptoms of V.D. Another case was, that of a sister who went to check out a bad stomach ache and she was asked to take a pregnancy test. Who wanted vitamins? Oh, no, vitamins taken 5 days after the first of the month. We wonder where the Doctor got his license from! (Oh, Oxford High). Senior Year β Wait a minute! I don't have a room. The class of '79 has filled up every room and lounge. Did you know that the Oxford Hotel is now a dormitory? Where's my trunk? β Security! β Route one, Mr. Kinney β Oh, wow! But this is my last year! Or so I thought! Check with the Registrar β Va of a credit, Funkology. I need what? But I thought β what do you mean the summer trimester!!!!!!! Hang on in there. Survivors! We're going to make it this time. Did everybody just hear the announce- ment? Daddy Branson his boys decided that due to the overcrowded conditions of the class our diplomas will be sent by mail. Besides the expense would be less than the cost of Senior week. There are more memories, probably twice as many. But those other memories will live in our minds and our hearts. If we could do it again, would we? Could we? Lincoln University is a memory that will always linger with us. Every experience has been a stepping stone in our lives. But most important of all, the bonds of friendship we've forged will always hold us together. May they never be broken. The collective reality of men is in their recognition of their part to the universe. Many separate men combine and form the whole of mankind. Many separate wholes combine and form the universe. All species of animals, all species of trees, the coming together of the seas, each represent a separate whole to earth. Each planet is made of many wholes. Each planet is part of the universal spirit. Every star is part of the whole of the universe. Each element is a force. When all the elements join together we have the universal'force. Therein lies our strength. Recognizing that we are a part of the universal force, we can open ourselves to all the wisdom therein, which is all the wisdom there is. Still, as human beings we must strive for each other. For when the least of us is poor in spirit, the spirit of all mankind suffers and is weakened. When the spirit of mankind weakens, the spirit of earth is weakened. When the spirit of earth is weakened, earth eventually ceases to exist as she loses her force in the cosmos, and falls into oblivion. And you will say, why struggle to enhance another in spirit or grow in my own spirit when all can come to death. Remember, by your strength or by your weakness depended the continuity of earth, and as your spirit is a part of the whole of earth, so it is part of the universal spirit, and in that spirit lies your own continuance. Yet how will you know that spirt if you have not sought it out and sought to know its way in this life? M.L. 92 ORGANIZATIONAL SEMINAR On Thursday September 11th, 1975, the Student Government Association sponsored a symposium, in which all recognized student organizations took part. The president of the Student Government Association established the purpose of the symposium: it was to be a start toward greater contact amongst students and campus organizations. Each organization's president spoke about the purpose, history, recent accomplishments and annual projects of his or her particular group. It was the consensus of the audience that this symposium was a success and an excellent means of getting all organizations unifiably known to the student body.
