Leaves on autumn days when the cold first blew i turned up my collar and squatted like my African sister beside a pile of leaves ... brown, like me; or gold, or orange, or yellow, or red, and sometimes green, but always dead, that crackled in my fisted hand and crumbled to the hardened earth i laughed to see them fall. and now, in my autumnal youth when the cold again begins to blow i turn my frayed collar up and squat, like my African ancester beside a pile of dried out minds; brown, like mine or gold, or orange or yellow .. . and sometimes Black but very nearly, always, dead that crackle in my fisted hand and crumble to the tear-soaked ground it hurts to see them fall. jaydi (Jessica Thorpe)
