LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Vice-President for Student Affairs TO THE TEMPESTUOUS CLASS OF 1975 In her long and glorious history. Lincoln University has graduated smaller classes than yours, classes larger than yours, perhaps classes even more academically inclined than yours, but never has Lincoln graduated a class more exciting or vibrant than the Class of 1975. You perhaps, are the prototype for the future generations of Lincoln students. Your class will long be remembered for its impact upon Lincoln. Your very real sense of and commitment to human rights, social awareness and academic excellence has propelled you to the very forefront of the struggle for liberation, peace, and social justice, both in this country and abroad. Moreover, as a result of your total dedication to your convictions, you have acted as a ca- talyst in stimulating Lincoln to reaffirm and strengthen her original mission during these turbu- lent and troubled times and become an even more relevant institution for social change. Not once, during the past four years, have you allowed Lincoln to forget-or not be cognizant of-her most sig- nificant and varied responsibilities to the greater community at large. We have grown to know each other well, you and I. and although we have not always agreed on all things. I am convinced that our rapport is real and that there will always exist among us a genu- ine sense of affection, honesty and mutual self respect. I have sincerely enjoyed being a part of your development for the past few years, and I will always be indebted to you for I feel that I learned and received as much-if not more-than I taught and gave. As your baccalaureate days draw to a close, and as you move into a new kind of relationship with your alma mater, please know that we are all hoping that you will effectively utilize your skills and training to achieve the professional and social success that we know you are capable of. Al- though you will no longer be with us-in a formal sense-we do want you to realize that you are Lin- coln. that you are inextricably bound to the past and the future of this great institution, and that you therefore have a responsibility to sustain and increase her viability, significance and heritage. As you now go forth into the world. I would like to share with you this thought from William Penn that has always-at least in my mind-exemplified the actions and spirit of the Class of 1975. I expect to pass through life but once. If. therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing 1 can do to any fellow being, let me do it now and not defer or neglect it. as I shall not pass this way again.” Please let this thought truly be indicative of your philosophy of life, and let it serve as your guide in all future social interactions. With best wishes for a long, prosperous and happy life I am. Very sincerely yours. Vice President for Student Affairs
