Because the time is ours, but not to waste, We are in this world for each other. So share it with someone. Let you and I become one. Who knows. I just might be your lover! bernard sustenance by schery loneliness prevails no matter what love brings love prevails no matter what life brings I I came to l.u. an eighteen year old child and now that I’m about to leave I realize that I've grown to womanhood . It took my late night rounds to McRary Freddy D and Ashmun to realize it took those tearful nights and wine stupors to realize .it took that first great love affair with-you-know- who in you-know-what dorm to realize, and it took a lot of thinking, realizing and analyzing of my LIFE, my loves my HOPES and Dreams to discover the 21 year old Woman who is me. DC 6 LINCOLN UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT October 9. 1974 TO THE CLASS OF 1975: Whenever a class is leaving, I have a feeling of remorse over what more could have been done for you. The world you are entering is in economic turmoil; there is much anguish. People are truly starving to death over great stretches of Africa south of the Sahara, the Sahel, and in India. Yet there is no doubt that the world has the resources to bring the advantages of civilization to all its people. I do not think that Lincoln has done enough to insure that you have a sound, accurate, basic knowledge of the nature of the world and of man. Perhaps it is impossible to acquire such education in the four short years of college. We may hope that Lincoln laid the foundation in science, psychology, mathemat- ics. sociology, so that you can develop with assurance those genuine, rele- vant. intellectual skills. As you leave Lincoln, we are at work to insure that there will be greater opportunity for rewarding employment for you and. es- pecially. that there will be greater opportunity for graduate study. We must produce more people with the highest training in all fields, but especially those crucial fields of economics, political science, engineering, mathematics and science. Strangely, we cannot accept that our students are moving into any of the learned professions in numbers commensurate with their popula- tion ratio — which. I think, is as good an index as any to start our arguments. Even in so popular a field as medicine, we were only 2%. There should be at least six times as many. These things I tell the National Board on Graduate Education, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, and the other groups with whom I meet. For you. I hope you do not believe that destructiveness and cruelty are innate in our species so that you are willing to accept a view of the future that gives us less dignity less freedom, less participation. You are apt to begin your working life in a city gripped now with urban hysteria, separated by a tremem- dous and disturbing distance from the place it could be for concerned human beings. Carry with you from Lincoln a historical sense of inevitable victory. Very fondly yours, Herman Russell Branson President ► 8 Comptroller Mr. Clarence Kinney 9 LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Vice-President for Student Affairs TO THE TEMPESTUOUS CLASS OF 1975 In her long and glorious history. Lincoln University has graduated smaller classes than yours, classes larger than yours, perhaps classes even more academically inclined than yours, but never has Lincoln graduated a class more exciting or vibrant than the Class of 1975. You perhaps, are the prototype for the future generations of Lincoln students. Your class will long be remembered for its impact upon Lincoln. Your very real sense of and commitment to human rights, social awareness and academic excellence has propelled you to the very forefront of the struggle for liberation, peace, and social justice, both in this country and abroad. Moreover, as a result of your total dedication to your convictions, you have acted as a ca- talyst in stimulating Lincoln to reaffirm and strengthen her original mission during these turbu- lent and troubled times and become an even more relevant institution for social change. Not once, during the past four years, have you allowed Lincoln to forget-or not be cognizant of-her most sig- nificant and varied responsibilities to the greater community at large. We have grown to know each other well, you and I. and although we have not always agreed on all things. I am convinced that our rapport is real and that there will always exist among us a genu- ine sense of affection, honesty and mutual self respect. I have sincerely enjoyed being a part of your development for the past few years, and I will always be indebted to you for I feel that I learned and received as much-if not more-than I taught and gave. As your baccalaureate days draw to a close, and as you move into a new kind of relationship with your alma mater, please know that we are all hoping that you will effectively utilize your skills and training to achieve the professional and social success that we know you are capable of. Al- though you will no longer be with us-in a formal sense-we do want you to realize that you are Lin- coln. that you are inextricably bound to the past and the future of this great institution, and that you therefore have a responsibility to sustain and increase her viability, significance and heritage. As you now go forth into the world. I would like to share with you this thought from William Penn that has always-at least in my mind-exemplified the actions and spirit of the Class of 1975. I expect to pass through life but once. If. therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing 1 can do to any fellow being, let me do it now and not defer or neglect it. as I shall not pass this way again.” Please let this thought truly be indicative of your philosophy of life, and let it serve as your guide in all future social interactions. With best wishes for a long, prosperous and happy life I am. Very sincerely yours. Vice President for Student Affairs DEAN MARIE R. VERNON ASSOC. DEAN OF STUDENTS ADVISOR TO INTL’ STUDENTS DR. This staff has tried to gather pictures and words which capture the essence of four years of life together at Lincoln. We would like to thank all those who have brought us this far through life’s perilous journey: our fami- lies who gave us love, our teachers who gave us an education, and our friends who gave of themselves. As you turn these pages of smiles, beauty, and regrets, remember that this yearbook is an affirmation of our class’ strength and hope. Even while the torrent of time washes away our vitality, never doubt that the spirit of the class of 1975 has and will endure. Believe with all our hearts in ourselves, because only then can we continue to dare the impossible. Forever yours. Bruce M. The Rolling Hills of what? Uh Oh! Who’s that? What’s Hapnin! Solid! Solid?’’ What’s a Solid? Smile please. Say cheese for Mr. Dill now.” That’s it. 7:00 a.m.? Rise up and shine for what? Test? I ain't learned nothin yet to be taking no tests. Thursday: Go to Lincoln Shuffle! It’s quite simple. Just put your right foot in the administration building and kind of Cha-cha-cha- oh excuse me — on over to Mr. Kinney’s office, Two, three, four, up to the financial aid office, two, three, four, back to Mr. Kinney, two, three, four, Crash! Uh oh, who’s that? What’s Hapin? Nothin solid What’s a solid? Sunday afternoon the upperclassmen came.? By Monday morning at eight o’clock most of us have gotten somewhat use to the surroundings. Lincoln Hall? Oh sure, go straight up the walk till you come to the fork — bear left ... Homecoming 1971 — Curtis Mayfield says If there’s hell below, we’re all gonna go! Then there was the talent show — sing that song Barons, Do it sex machine — Go on Merial — Pop that thing, Mickey! Hey wait a minute! What’s this? Pennies from heaven — wow, there goes a dime — Well al- right! What you mean half the class is punching out — not 75 — alright Y’all, now straighten up. Snow, WOW! Check it out! I’ve never seen such beautiful snow before. It sure is a lot. GOSH! Hey wait a minute — no sense in over doing it! Alright that’s enough — Ohs We can’t be snowed in’ . . I mean, that only happens in the mov- ies! When spring finally rolled around, we went on a Maiden voyage with Ramsey Lewis in Grim Gym. So’s that’s what her legs look like — H U M ! . May, ’72. We made it — Dr. Rudd gave us more A’s in chemistry in one year then he gave out in a long time! Hey Wow — it’s September all over again, Man, It just seems like only yesterday when we were just Preps. — But baby, look at us now! Think I’ll black an over to the SGA of- fice, ain’t no big thing, just 75, better slide on over to the radio station — ain’t no big thang, just seventy-five. Maybe I’ll go check out the Freshmen sophomore vs. the junior senior football game — We won! Ain’t no big thing — just seventy-five. SEVEN- TY-FIVE is all over the place and we are coming from all ends, that's right, party hardy and work harder for the party just make sure you don't matriculate yourself out of here! Now straighten up — that’s it — take it easy — go on do it. What? You mean, there are more people in the class of seventy-five on the Dean’s list than in any other class — and they said it couldn’t be done! I say we deserve a break 98 HISTORY this Homecoming. Party! Stay up!! Stevie sings for Sickle Cell — that's talent. The Tal- ent show in the Chapel — there goes those pennies again! Hey, who’s that? What Hapin? Nothin. Solid! What’s a Solid? Is there any truth to the rumor that Earth, Wind, and Fire are gonna perform at an open air concert in frontof the new gym? Well. I’m going to call my friends from Ohio and tell them to come on down. No grounding, HUH? Ah, ladies and gentlemen, I regret to inform you that, ah, due to circumstances beyond our control ’’ As juniors, we became official lower members of the upper class — Hey Preppie — Get off the grass! Oh, the Lincoln Shuffle just isn’t appropo anymore — I think I’ll just wait for a few days before registering. Solid! Oh, so that’s what solid is! S 0 L l D!! Herb, Yago, anyone? Thanks, man, but I’ve got some study- ing to do — take a rain check though. There goes that damn snow again, Ow, Cool out man, Ow! . the 1973-74 talent show served as evidence that inflation is rampant everywhere especially at L.U. The janitors reported that only one dollar and thirty cents was swept from the Chapel floor. Cheap! Alright ya’II! What you say we go on down to Nottingham Park for a little picnic, we’ll do it like it is supposed to be done!. A little dancing, some games, a lot of food and J.J.’s special punch. What’s that — Oh I’m afraid not, you see that is the Jr. class picnic, no seniors allowed! September 10, 1974 The mighty class returns with a good, good, feeling — something like Sanctified Sanctified Seventy-five. You know I think the class of seventy-eight has potential! I’d register for classes today, except for the fact that I’ve already taken these courses — I never realized that I was so full of knowledge. Half of the class is finishing up a semester early — I'm sure gonna miss them! Gil Scott Heron!!! Home for Homecom- ing, live and in person! What? Pay? Man I need that dollar nine! Had my silver sparkley Hollywood swinger suit on and got down with LaBelle and Eddie Kendrick boogied down. The Duce .. . not them niggers from '72! It sure is good to see Ya’II! Final’s al- ready — time goes by so quickly when you’re having fun (snarl), undergraduate record exams, Oh, please, pass the bird. What a Bust! I still don't believe we beat the Fresh- men and Sophomores 46-0 in the football game — guess it’s rough out here in the real world. $25 — that’s a whole lot of money when you ain’t got it.
