1 i i To the Class of 1971 March 23, 1971 Chaque homme port la forme entiere de l'humaine condition. Recognizing in this wise saying and in that skilled activity the essence of man as thinker and doer — nei- ther activity superior to the other. Both necessary to function as man. 1971 is not a good year for the 2340 American colleges and universities. Costs are climbing out of hand; resources are dwindling; even the great prestigious institutions are announcing large deficits and bemoaning the necessity of increasing tuition and fees. And eclipsing these outward signs of difficulty are the doubts as to program, stance, and emphasis. Lincoln is not immune. Yet these experiences for Lincoln like your experiences should toughen us, making us less complacent. Perhaps instilling in us a little fear for our world. An old sailor es- caping from slavery in Virginia, remarked on his long life, A man who is not afraid of the sea will soon be drowned, for he will be going out on a day he shouldn't. But we do be afraid of the sea, we do only be drowned now and again. So it is with all our worlds. Our best wishes and sincerest hopes go with you as you seek the answers to the immense problems of the 21st century. Cordially yours, Herman R. Branson President March 23, 1971 To the Class of 1971 From all sides come assurances that you are graduating in the time of a revolution. Whether you can feel that now or will years from now when you return again to these pages — either position may make you question what did Lincoln do for me during such a significant period. I hope that you go forth as a true individual that you have so employed your time, your contacts, your involvements that you are a creative problem solver rather than a receptacle for facts. Above all, I think, this means you recognize the requirements for intelligent decision making about your personal life, your society, your world. And you should be tough-minded, not easily swayed by the emotional appeals of some deceptive illogic. High in the list of awarenesses rests that recognition of the earth as a fragile, little, vulnerable globe hurtling along some unknown path in the deep immensity of space. It is all we humans have; we must learn to care for it. Lincoln has not been at all neutral in its commitments. The activities have been di- rected to turning you on about the harsh social realities. Your classes have not been isolated disciplines severed from the real world. Your experiences have ranged from understanding the power grip of an Ova Tjimba man, living in the Baines Mountains of northern Kaokoveld, South West Africa, as he sat cracking open a long bone to ex- tract the marrow, to the thought processes of a Montaigne writing: People We Would Like to Thank Dr. H. Alfred Farrell President Branson Dean Thomas Dedication Rather than dedicate this yearbook to some individual of outstanding stature, the yearbook staff of 1971 is dedicating this book to the effort of a much needed social change. We feel that this is a very appropriate gesture. We feel this way because we have seen changes in ourselves and in the world around us, (locally, nationally, and internationally), in our four years here at Lincoln. In spite of these changes, perfection in ourselves and in the world, is still far from hand. Therefore, upon going out and seeking a place in this world for ourselves, we must not be content with our present status, but instead must seek out even greater changes for the betterment of our socie- ty and ourselves. If we look back to September 1967, it would be hard not to see a relatively different person from that which we are today. From the first day of our freshman year until graduation, our perspective on life was constantly changing. Our four years here at Lincoln have introduced us to the Black Power movement, Black Pride, and the Afro. We have experienced many events that have brought about a greater sense of maturity and understanding of human nature and human desires. These four years have brought seasoning to our lives. 6 As we ourselves have changed in these four years, so has the world around us. At the local level we have seen many changes in our own university. These past four years have brought us a curriculum in Black Studies, and twenty-four hour open house. We participated in the boycotts protesting the Augusta Georgia slayings, and the Jackson State College murders. We were also participants in the boycotts for decent medical facilities. We witnessed an increase in our female population which was outnumbered by eight to one when we came and is presently down to two to one and that lead is still steadily decreasing. On the national level, we have seen masses of people protest against the Viet Nam War. We have seen the birth of the lottery system for the draft. We have seen the elec- tion of Black mayors to major cities and the slaying of two of our national figures. We have experienced the growth of a drug culture and the persecution of the Black Pan- thers. We have seen the growth of the Hippie and Yippie cults, and the protest of wel- fare recipients for welfare recipients' rights. We also saw the first man on the moon. On the international level, we have seen students throughout the world protesting against their countries' oppression. The Irish and Polish eruptions proved that Ameri- cans are not the only people who seek social change in their country. It would be close to impossible to list the changes that have taken place within our- selves and throughout the world during the course of the past month, much less in the last four years. In spite of these thousands of changes which have occurred the plight of the world seems to have remained the same. This lack of progress and human co- existence in spite of the many changes that we have seen is an indication of how much more mankind must change the world. We the yearbook staff of 1971 sincerely hope that our class can contribute significantly to the changes needed. 7 This is where it all began. September 7, 1967 4 This is where it all began. Not since the middle 1950's has a Lincoln J.V. team gone undefeated. Coach Rinaldi termed it, A most satisfying season, because after 10 games we lost 3 starters.” Lincoln beat some very good teams such as Maryland State, Delaware State, Cheyney State, Goldey Beacom Junior College, and Howard University. Leading scorers this year were Garry White 23.2, Barry White 15.4, Chuck Henderson 13.9. Snuffy” Smith 14.8, and Chris Bowens 14.6. The leading rebounders included Henderson who gathered 174 re- bounds in 10 games for a 17.4 average and Snuffy” Smith with 209 and an average of 15.0 per game. Others playing a large role were Chris Bowens with a team leading 48 assists, Mallory Sanford with 40 assists and playmaker, Chris Hawkins, a leading substitute who scored 94 points, Darnell Palmer with a strong board game, and Dale White who played both forward and guard. The team averaged 92.7 points per game and allowed 63.4 points per game. Coach Rinaldi called this The best squad he has had while at Lincoln for two years.” In two years the Young Lions have won 26-4. BASKETBALL 1970-71 (JUNIOR VARSITY) Lincoln Univ.
