A LANGSTON HUGH AUOMAl iSlAtfV UNCOLH UNIVEtSlTY LINCOLN UNIVEtSlTY, PA 19332-0999 3 DEDICATION JAMES BONNER MacRAE From the time we entered Lincoln University in September of 1965, the Class of â69 heard the myths, legends and rabble about the then Dean of Students, James Bonner MacRae. The âBoomer's reputation began, however, long before, in 1947, when he returned to his Alma Mater to accept the administrative post he held for twenty-one years. We listened to the myths, legends and rabble, and being freshmen, we were some- what awed and apprehensive about a man who was known for his skills in verbal re- buke and satirical wit. We saw the Dean stroll about the sparsely populated campus, hands behind his back, eyes alert and alive; and we chuckled and sometimes marvelled at his pearls of wisdom. He established himself as a friend and advisor, but he was never lax in his firmness with those students who overstepped their bounds. These were our impressions of the man and his office. Today James B. MacRae heads the Education Department and serves as coordina- tor for the University's newly instituted January Interim Program. Since his under- graduate days, which ended in 1924, he has ever been a loyal son of Lincoln. His loyal- ty is manifested in the admirable work he has done as an educator and administrator for the past forty-five years. To James Bonner MacRae the Class of'69 respectfully dedicates its edition of the Lincoln Lion. 4 THE CLASS OF '69 IN MEMORIAM ROGER ALLAN JOHNSON Born: December 3, 1947 Died: July 20, 1962 Roger Allan Johnson, to whom this page is respectfully dedicated, was bom De- cember 3, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With aspirations of becoming a doctor, Roger was a conscientious student who was able to mix wholesome rabble with aca- demic excellence. âFlea as he was affectionately called by those who knew him well had a knack for getting involved in deep intellectual debates. He took advan- tage of every opportunity to challenge the intellects of those around him, while at the same time establishing firm human ties with the Lincoln Community. The ideas and ideals of Roger represent the aspirations and strivings of the Class of '69. For us the past four years have been years of intellectual maturation and human understanding. In our endeavors to experience life to its fullest and learn about the world we live in, we have gained great insight into our own inner beings and have torn down unrealistic facades which serve to alienate brother from brother; hence we are assured that the prospect of our weaning a successful path through the constricting perplexities of life are quite good. As when we entered the gates of Lincoln in 1965. we leave in 1969 with some appre- hension about the future, but we feel quite secure in knowing that we have aquired the essential tools for living. Just as the memories of Roger Allan Johnson will linger in our minds and hearts eternally, we feel confident that the Class of '69 will not dissi- pate as we go our separate ways, but that we will join Lincoln's endless procession of splendor making the world a better place for all men to live and fulfill themselves. THE CLASS OF'69 ADMINISTRATION PRESIDENT WACHMAN 8 June, 1969 TO THE CLASS OF 1969 You will never be the same again. And Lincoln University has changed because of your presence on this campus over the past four years. You represent, like the Univer- sity, a great diversity of human beings. Yet, you have a fine spirit of unity, and your collective influence has been great, as have your individual contributions to the Univer- sity. There has never been more emphasis on the value of education than in the past four years. The ferment and the changes in the field of education have been very substan- tial. Truly, educational institutions in general, and Lincoln in particular, have been âwhere the action isâ during your stay on the campus. You have seen significant calendar and curriculum changes during the past four years. You have been participants in the period of the greatest growth of the College, and of the initiation and flowering of residential co-education. You have seen student partici- pation in the decision-making process at the College increase from a strong base, and you have been a part of the continuous strengthening of the curriculum to make it con- stantly more relevant to the times in which we live and to the needs of the Lincoln stu- dents. You are the largest graduating class in Lincoln's history, and one of the most hetero- genous. You have brought a great deal to Lincoln, and I am sure that you are taking a great deal with you. We all hope you will come back often, as individuals and as a class, and we wish you the very best in your careers in the future. Faithfully yours. His college was Princeton, and his advanced degrees were from the University of Pennsylvania. He also studied abroad, in France. He came to Lincoln as an Assistant Professor of Spanish and French and as Registrar, and served in these capacities until 1940. In addition to his teaching, he also served as Librarian for nine years from 1940 to 1949. After spending the next eight years primarily in the classroom as Professor of Romance Lan- guages, he was called upon to serve as Acting President of the University, a post which he occupied with great distinction for three years, from 1957 â I960. This was a period in which there was great soul-searching at Lincoln and elsewhere in this country concerning the role of this institution like Lincoln University. There were more than a few who predicted at this time and some prescribed, the end of this institution; but Dr. Grubb followed the words of his predecessor, the late Wil- liam Hallock Johnson, by saying, âThere will always be a Lincoln!â Dr. Grubbâs love and dedication to this institution was demonstrated primarily by deed, since he was a man of relatively few words. His words, his thoughts, his contributions to Lincoln University, to all of us, and to many others will remain and continue to live. Our hearts go out to his daughter and our thanks go to God for giving this fine, selfless and gracious man to us for such a long and fruitful period.ââ excerpts from Dr. Wachman's Memorial Speech Dec. 9, 1968 39 LINCOLN U... As this new class of graduates move out into the world, we must neither be prepared to rest on the laurels of our predecessors, nor to go about the task of making our contributions in the same ways they did. A new crop of situations have arisen, and they call for new solutions. The winds of change have taken new directions, and we must help them to their fruitful conclusions by our understanding of and participation in their direction. In all adventure stories the Bad Guyâ is always dressed in Black! Such is the consistency of the visual medium. Not only the program itself, but the commercial message depicts Blackness as evil and detrimental. In resent history, those persons most affected by this stigma have acquired a vast amount of knowledge, contrary to this depiction, and expressed it in various manners, often called Movements. In keeping with the concepts of this newly found awareness (which has become a way of life) America's first Negroâ university, in the year 1968, took upon itself the task of exhibiting (visually) the new adage that Blackness could be beneficial, during it's annual Homecoming weekend. With the theme of âEBONY PERSONIFIED , the university populace displayed the overall talents of Black America in it's Homecoming Queen Pageant, student Tal- ent Show, and all other aspects of the diversified program with itâs feature attraction Sister Miriam Makeba. A multitude of hours of extensive labor involving the Lincoln University Varsity Club and the newly formed Homecoming Committee went into the forming of this successful weekend. To the members of these two groups and the Student Government Association, especially James Young. Kenny has been the floor leader our squad has depended on for the last two years. His dead-eye shooting and adept ball handling have made him a unani- mous All-Conference selection for two years in a row. The basketball court is not the only place that Kenny shows promise. I feel odd because so many experiences must go unrecorded, and so many feelings can not be related in material terms. Lincoln University has meant so many things to us the last of the Ole School. We saw and experi- enced our beloved âPioneer Women,â the weekends, the frats, clubs, classes, exams, and above all, ârabble.â All these things and more will help make us what we are to become. To my classmates and advisors, I say thanks! It has not all been fun and games, but it has been mean- ingful to create this yearbook. Again, 1 thank you for your help.
