SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LANGSTON HUGHFS MEMORIAL LltRA?% MNCOLN UNIVERSITY LINCOLN UNIVERSITY. f A JMffi Presented to LANGSTON HUGHES MEMORIAL LIBRARY LINCOLN UNIVERSITY by Mr. Thomas p. Gunn Class of 1966 WHAT IS A UNIVERSITY? It is the place to which a thousand schools make contributions; in which the intellect may safely range and speculate, sure to find its equal in some antagonist activity, and its judge in the tribunal of truth. It is a place where inquiry is pushed forward, and discoveries verified and perfected, and rashness rendered innocuous, and error exposed, by the collision of mind with mind, and knowledge with knowledge. It is the place where the professor becomes eloquent, and is a missionary and a preacher, displaying his science in its most complete and most winning form, pouring it forth with the zeal of enthusiasm, and lighting up his own love of it in the breasts of his hearers. It is the place where the catechist makes good his ground as he goes, treading in the truth day by day into the ready memory, and wedging and tightening it into the ex- panding reason. It is a place which wins the admiration of the young by its celebrity, kindles the affections of the middle-aged by its beauty, and rivets the fidelity of the old by its associations. It is a seat of wis- dom, a light of the world, a minister of the faith, an Alma Mater of the rising generation. There were 123 of us then, and all of us felt good about that arch-way, those green and orange beanies, and many other things -- roadhouse runs, beer parties, wood night prepa- rations, and bull sessions. When we were not at the roadhouse or rabbling in one another’s rooms, we spent our time studying, and it was then that we learned what an all-night-stand really was. All of these things were integral parts of our introduction to dormitory life. Somehow, however, between our studying chores and our in- troduction to dormitory life, we settled down and elected class officers. Tom Gray (better known then as 'Hackensack') was president, and Donald Bogle (vice-pres.), June Bowers (sec.), and Kenny Powell (treas.) were our other officers. Our class senators were Norman Armstrong, Sonny Jefferson, and Reggy Lee. The academic honors of the class went to Florence Collins, who made straight A's both that Freshman year and the Sopho- more year that followed. It was in the Sophomore year that we lost a quarter of our class, and all night stands became more important to us than roadhouse runs. Also important were fraternity initiations and 135 other organizations and activities, all of which seemed to divide our class into separate groups. Our officers that Sophomore year were Rick Ireland (pres.), Herschel Bailey (vice pres.), Elmore Phillips (sec.), and Kenny Powell (treas.). They held the fort until our Junior year, which proved to be one of the most interesting. It was during our Junior year that as a class we were once again divided -- this time it was an academic rather than social division. We started to major in different areas, and we all tended to stick with those in our fields. Academically, we all worked harder than ever, and it was in this year that other ju- niors -- besides a certain co-ed -- made the Dean's List. Our Junior Class officers were Wesley Raney (pres.), Charles Spain (vice-pres.), Claudia Van Blake (sec.), and Vaughn Thomas (treas.). In our Senior year, we all started reminiscing, wishing we could start all over again with the knowledge of life and studies we had now acquired. Those days of green beanies seemed a wel- come relief to those we now faced, which loomed big with com - prehensives and GRE's. As Seniors we noticed many changes that had occured during 136 the past four years. There was the addition of the Student Union and Fine Arts Buildings as well as close to 50 co-eds who now had a dormitory of their own. And it was also interesting to note that of those original seven Freshman Class officers, only two graduated with our class. One, Donald Bogle, became the editor of our yearbook, and the other, Norman Armstrong, be- i came the president of our Senior Class. The other Senior Class officers were Elmore Phillips (vice-pres.), Claudia Van Blake (sec.), and Rick Ireland (treas.). Although our class had dwindled to 81 and although we had all gone on to higher academic heights, one thing remained constant: Florence Collins was still a straight A student, and she went on to become valedictorian of our class. And Florence and Claudia Van Blake were the only co-eds, of the orginal five, to graduate with our class. As we look back on those early days of roadhouse runs, beer parties, all-night-stands, and, of course, those green and orange beanies, we are all somewhat nostalgic when we realize those days are past and now a part of memory alone. But being nostal- gic is good; from the past, we learn more about the future. And 4 from the future we must learn that we are to grieve not, rather i find Strength in what remains behind. 137 remembrances Mr. and Mrs. James Andriole Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Gray Mr. Louis Armstrong Mr. and Mrs. William H.
