With the increasing support of the student body, the Student Senate helped to shorten homeroom from ten to five minutes. Several new admin- istrative policies have been implemented, for example, the new unit system. Some stu- - dents might argue that the unit system is not a change at all, for, with the exception of the freshmen having their own unit, nothing has changed. As a result of a food fight in the cafeteria early this year, the ramp was shut down and has not as yet been reopened. A _ Car accident involving several L-S students _ in November made the threat of a closed Campus a major issue in school. Some low points of this year were the behavior of the students at the nuclear weapon debate and the hospitalization of Mr. Murphy. Students have begun’to take an interest in world issues, donating almost $2,000 to Oxfam this year and showing their anger about the Around Town Sudbury During the summer and fall of 1984-1985 many stores and shopping centers were added to Sudbury’s Route 20. These stores provide work for many of the town’s teenagers and are very convenient for residents, who formerly had to go to other towns to shop. However, the stores have also caused severe traffic problems on Route 20 and it is uncertain as to whether the formerly small town of Sudbury will be capable of handling the problems that accompany urbanization. policy of apartheid in South Africa by mar- ching in a protest in- December. During the presidential elections in November, L-S held its own mock election. The results were very close, with 52% of the school voting for Reagan and 48% for Mondale. In February, L-S teachers Thom Thacker and William Schecter created quite.a.scandal.when they designed an alternate to the book covers distributed in the school by the Army Nation- al Guard. Thacker and Schecter thought the original covers were false propaganda and their cover emphasized that being in the Na- tional Guard means-killing people. Upon seeing the new covers, the National Guard representative became irate and ordered that they be removed. Schecter and Thacker objected that the covers were private proper- ty and could not be seized. This conflict re- ceived much media coverage and has yet to be completely resolved. Lincoln In Lincoln this year, the town celebrated the centennial of the Public Library with many gala events, including a formal ball. In town politics, a major controversy arose over the closing of Winter Street. People petitioned to close the road because of a traffic problem that would result when the construction of a large industrial part on the Waltham-Lincoln border was completed. In oocheaat Cabbage Patch dolls were banned from the Lincoln Public Elementary schools, because children were forming ex- clusive clubs solely for the owners of Cabbage Patch dolls. Massachusetts Local politics was often in the news this year, with the mayoral election race $f Bo be one of the most exciting in years. In the end, however, Ray Flynn triumphed over the first black mayoral candidate in Boston’s history, Mel King. Shortly after his inauguration, Mayor Flynn and Governor Michael Dukakis, in an effort to crack down on drunk-driving, put an end to Happy Hours in the bars throughout the Boston area. Also in the news this year were the race riots this summer in Lawrence and the court trial of several Portuguese men who had raped a woman in Big Dan's Bar in Revere. Local politics received a hard blow when an immense arson ring was discovered involving officials in both the police and fire departments. State residents also were very concerned with state ecological problems, especially acid rain and the disposal of industrial wastes. 121 Dateline International ... Students are already in need of vacation by the end of September to ease the academic pressure. In South Africa, natives attempt to pressure their government into reform. Riots continue with the election of P.W. Botha, Apartheid advocate, as executive president. Later, L-S students will march in opposition of apartheid. Thacker and Schecter appear in The Boston Globe and spread their message of peace: At the same time, the Pope travels through the war torned coun- tries of South America. His presse in this volatile area is cherished by the predominant- ly Catholic community. The Pope speaks out against abortion, and reaffirms the hierachial organizations of the Roman Catholic Church. Medicine and Science An anonymous baby girl, nick- named “Baby Fae” by the press, be- came the first recipient of a cross- species heart transplant. Baby Fae, who was suffering from a condition which left the left side of her heart severely underdeveloped, received the heart of a young baboon. Just when she seemed on the verge of a complete recovery, her body re- jected the heart and she died at the age of only 1 month old. This trans- plant was much protested by animal protectionists and religious leaders as cruel and unnatural. The Nobel Prize for Medicine was won by Cesar Mil- stein and Georges Kohler. These men fused a rapid- ly-reproducing tumor cell and a cell that produces antibodies to produce a cell that manufactures mass quantities of a given antibody. The Nobel Prize for Chemistry went to R. Bruce Merrifield for his work in automating a process that synthesizes complex proteins. The Nobel Prize for Physics this year was won by Carlo Rubbia and Simon Van der Meer. They de- veloped a theory that links the four forces of nature: electromagnetic force, gravity, the strong force which binds particles in a nucleus) and the weak orce (which controls radioactive decay). The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, came out with his phenomenally successful Born in the USA album and concert tour. “Dancin’ in the Dark” off that album was one of the top songs of the year. The biggest comeback of the year was Tina Turner’s, with her hit album, Pri- vate Dancer, featuring her first big sol o hits, ““What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Good to Me.” Enjoying continuing success this year was Lionel Richie with the release of his Can’t Slow Down album. Such songs as “Hello” and “All Night Long” will continue to be favorites for years to come. Van Halen made it big with its most popular album by far, 1984. The hit songs “Jump,” “Panama”, and “Hot for Teacher’ were some of the many popular songs on that album. Huey Lewis andthe News contributed to the music scene with their album, Sports. Theirsongs 4 “Heart and Soul,” “| Wanna New Drug”, and “If This is It” also blossomed § into popular videos. And we mustn't forget Boston’s own Cars, whose ¢ . album, Heartbreak City, was a huge success. Making a debut this year was Prince, who surprised the world with his highly acclaimed 4 movie and soundtrack, Purple Rain. Prince showed his diverse musical abilities in his number one hits, “Purple Rain”, “Let's 4 Go Crazy”, and “When Doves Cry.” Two of musics hot- test new stars were Cyndi Lauper with her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun album and Madonna with her hits, “Lucky Star” and “Like , a Virgin.” | ah “ae | Television The year in television has been one of rising popularity for the nightime soap operas. “Dallas’’, “Dynasty”, “‘Knot’s Landing”, and “Falcon Crest’ are old favorites, with newcomers “Paper Dolls” and ‘“‘Berrenger’s” gaining popularity fast. Daytime soaps are still quite popular with “All My Children” and ‘General Hospital’ leading the way. This was the year of the detective shows. The return of such shows as “Cagney and Lacey” and “Remington Steele” was well received and new shows such as “‘Miami Vice’, “McGruder and Loud”’, and “Hardcas- tle and McCormack” were successful as well. Sit-coms continue to be popular, with 124 the shows “Double Trouble”’, “It’s Your Move”, and ‘The Cosby Show” pre- miering. Music videos were the newcom- ers to television this year. Video shows such as ‘“‘Hot Hit Video” and ‘Friday Night Videos” enjoyed much popularity. Boston’s own Cars had many hit videos such as the award-winning “Drive” and “You Might Think”. A trend in videos this year was having Hollywood's biggest stars make cameo appearances in videos, such as in Ray Parker, Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” video and Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” and “Tell Her About It” videos. Movies This has been a big year for the movie industry. Popular comedians Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, and Eddie Murphy led the way in hit movies. Murray and Ackroyd starred in the summer box office smash, “‘Ghostbusters’’. The ever-popular Eddie Murphy starred in “Beverly Hills Cop”, another moneymaker. The movie, “Purple Rain’’, showed the many abilities of musical star, Prince; he proved to be a fine musician, vocalist and actor. This movie also introduced us to two new musical groups, Appollonia 6 and The Time. This was also the year of the cult movies ‘“‘Repo Man”, ‘“‘Liquid Sky”, and the Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense”. Dancing was a popular theme for mov- ies, highlighting breakdancing in “Breakin” and the history of dance in “‘That’s Dancing”. The Soviets had announced their boy- cot of the Olympics, com- plaining about the lack of security. However, the spirit of the games could not be crushed. Peter Uberoth, chairman of the Olympic Committee, made the games a success, and later became the Man of the Year for Time Magazine. The U.S. domi- nated the games in track and field. Carl Lewis ran away with four gold medals in the long jump, 100 meter, 200 meter, and relay races. Edwin Moses was victorious in the 400 meter hurdles, which brought him the title of Sports- man of the Year. The U.S. women were also strong in track and field. Evelyn Ashford broke an Olympic record in the 100 meter race. Joan Benoit outlasted the competition to win the first women’s marathon. Valerie Brisco-Hooks ran her way to 3 gold medals. The most dramatic, but unfortunate, event occurred in the women’s 3000 meter race when Mary Decker (U.S.) was tripped by Zola Budd (G.B.). Decker was a favorite in that race. In gymnastics, Mary Lou Retton 128 captured the gold with tens in the floor exercise and in the vault. The U.S. men’s team won the team competition. Pe- ter Vidmar (U.S.) missed the gold medal in the all-around competition by .25 of a point. The U.S. also dominated swimming. Doug Louganis dove for two gold medals. The U.S. had 9 out of 13 decisive victories in boxing, which had ae been a strength of the BASEBALL A big summer for sports was followed by American’s classic World Series. The Detroit Ti- gers took this crown, which was rightfully theirs. They Started the season with a 25 and 3 record and never looked back. They faced a feisty San Diego Padres team in the Series, but were able to over- come them and take the title. BASKETBALL After defeating the L.A. Lakers in a spectacular final series, the Celtics began the season as reigning champs. In their first confrontation with arch ri- vals 76ers, superstars Larry Bird and Julius Erving got into a shoving match. In their next meeting, the two men shook hands to make up for their uncharacteristic start. The Celtics made one major change this year when they traded Gerald Henderson, but Danny Ainge filled in well, and with a 41 and 9 record at the all-star break, they appeared to be on their way to another great season. FOOTBALL Many names stand out when one mentions the ’84-’85 sea- son. Dan Marino, only 23 years old and 2 years out of college, led the Miami Dol- phins to a 14 and 2 record, and a trip to the Super Bowl. He also broke every passing record in the book. Although they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, Mari- no will most likely appear there again. The 49er franchise was the most balanced and talented team in many years. They led the league with a 15 and 1 record, and crushed ev- ery team on their way to win- ning their second Super Bowl in 4 years. In the college ranks, a sensational young quarter- back from Boston College stole the hearts of fans every- where. Doug Flutie, winner of the Heisman Trophy, broke the al l-time passing and total ardage records in his fabu- Ous senior year in college. He gained more than 10,000 yards over his 4 collegic years in each category. He led the Eagles to a9 and 2 record plus a Cotton Bowl victory over the Houston Cougars. To endhis college career, he signed a multi-million contract with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. No matter how he fares in the pros, he will always be remembered as Boston's “Lit- tle Big Man” who gave sports- fans a big thrill for 4 years. TENNIS This year the pros were at their finest. Jimmy Connors was back to his winning self, having strong outings in the U.S. Open and at Wimbledon, and earning a 1 ranking. No one had come close to John McEnroe, though. He domi- nated tennis this year, indoors and out. Martina Navratilova was also unstoppable, until she was ousted by Hana Mand- likova in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Number two ranked Chris Evert Lloyd went on to win that tourna- ment. Soon after, Evert Lloyd beat Navratilova in the Virginia Slims finals in Florida. S.A.D.D.: Students Against Driving This is an organization that is extremely con- cerned with the large number of deaths and accidents that have been caused by people who drive while drunk. Today, as you read this, drunk drivers in the United States will kill seventy people and injure two thousand one hundred and fifty. Founded in 1982, the L-S chapter has tried each year to raise students’ level of awareness to the idea of driving responsibly and the hazards of not doing so. This year, we are pla nning to give pre- sentations in class- rooms, write articles for the newspapers, videotape interviews, have spot announce- ments on the radio (W.Y.A.J.), and organize an annual S.A.D.D. day. Inthe shadow of a gloomy Varsity season the J.V. team p roved its ability to work well as a team, by posting a 11-1-2 record. In the esa there were doubts, said Coach Burke. “We don’t have much raw talent as in past years; we'll just have to work harder as a team.” And work hard they did. The strong defense worked hard to keep the ball in L-S’ favor, and enabled the offense to be a constant threat to the opposing defense. The team then played a post- season game against Welles- ley. It was the Warriors best game of the season, but lost a very even game 1-0. L-S pro- ceeded to enter the M.I.A.A. Despite the fierce competition, the War- riors finished undefeated. The demanding physical con- ditioning and the talented play- ers allowed Coach Michelle Boisevert to win the D.C.L. ti- tle. There was a natural enthu- siasm and desire to win that made this team special. Even when injuries limited the ros- ter, and players were moved up to Varsity, the team hung in there, and won every game. The 1984 Varsity Football Cheerleading Squad got off to a good start this year with the help of advisors, Giselle Sampson and Rosemary Col- son. The squad helped to stimulate school spirit with the bonfire pep rally the night be- fore the Newton-South game. They also put a lot of time and effort into activities such as de- corating the players’ lockers, making signs for the game, and developing new cheers. This year’s squad was helped by the experience of Seniors Terry Ward, Captain Regina Terry, and Captain Susan Bowers. Some new ideas came from Juniors Melissa Bradley, Jodi Mullen, Laurie Pietz, Jenny Pollock, Faryl Rubin, and Katie Sampson. Sophomore Anetta Amelia added a new sparkle to the squad. They Almost Had It 1984 was an exceptional year for the Warrior Varsity Football team which ended with a record of 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the D.C.L. They not only tied the record for the most number of wins in a season, but also made school history by be- coming the first team to begin a season with four consecu- tive wins. The D.C.L. proved to be one of the toughest leagues in eastern Mass. This year and as a result L-S could not clinch the title, but instead had to set- tle for third place. Neverthe- less, the team was a strong contender for the Division 3 Superbowl, reaching the 1 spot in the Globe’s ranking at one point. The Warriors had great leadership in the co-captains Todd Burke and Mike De- Franco. As quarterback, Burke surpassed all expecta- tions (of coaches and fans) by breaking the school’s passing records. DeFranco, a split end and Burke’s main target, broke the school’s all-time receiving records. Both the athletic and leadership abilities of each captain provided much toward the success of the season. The explosive offense also set a new school record by accumulating a total of 233 points. The team’s place kick- er, senior Chris Siepietow- ski, set yet another record with 22 extra point kicks. The offen- sive line was led by seniors Todd Richardson and Charles Wilson, while seniors Nigel Drakes, the team’s leading rusher and 196 Above: The Lean Mean Fighting Machine! This is not to say, however, that the three teams ahead of them had an easy time of playing L-S. As a matter of fact, when L-S met their two rivals, Acton and Weston, for the second time, a highly motivated Warrior squad almost beat both teams. Acton and Weston were lucky to escape with 1-0 wins. These two games de- monstrated the quality of play that the Field Hockey Team is capable of performing. Led by Captains Ei- leen Smith and Pat Lane and Nancy Wollins, the team had its best finish ever inthe D.C.L. The second place team had a league record of 5-1-1, with a few non-league meets yet to be run. Capturing second place was due mainly to the talented incoming freshman trackees. A combination of sprinters, long-distance, and the shotputters really made the team score high. Out- standing freshmen include Karen Arpino, Rita Raju, Stephanie Lind, Chantel Casey and Celestine Klein. Some of these freshmen attended the state coaches meet at Harvard earlier in the season. This experience will help the team gear up for the State meet. The coach, Eileen Murphy, is very excited about her winning. She thinks one reason the team did so well was the support the team- mates supplied one another, at practices and meets. Coach Murphy sees a lot of talent for the next few years, and feels that this year was only the be- ginning. The success of these girls can only draw more girls to practice in the halls of L-S and rise early on Saturday mornings for the meets. Who knows? With the added success of the boys, maybe L-S will be the next school to have a field house for these girls who are running for their school. Despite a slow start (4-3 overall, 0-2 D.C.L.), the team finished strong to qualify for the tournament, and at one point contended for the league title. In the middle of the sea- son, L-S ran off a string of 6 wins and then faced Boston Latin in a battle for the title. The game was a typical D.C.L. contest; hard out with many lead changes. Although the score favored Latin, L-S had proven that it could be a chal- lenge for anyone in the league. Although the team lost its chance at a league champion- ship, the overall season was a success, with major wins over Boston Tech and D.C.L. foe, Wayland. This year the team was led by eels Craig Carter, Donald Craft Joe Gazza. Although the team had only 4 seniors, it has ample varsity experience with Way- man Smith and Joe Sims re- turning from last years squad. With the addition of David Sayles, Jim Devaney, Tom Swank, Derek Allerton and Mike Isenberg from last years J.V. team, the average height of the team exceeded any other recent L-S team. New- comer Mark Straubel’s playing ability and size fit in well with the team. Rodney Marshall had a strong second varsity season as guard. Rookie Hoopsters 219 Jackson Browne’s song was one that really captured the essence of the Girls Varsi- ty Basketball Team this sea- son. Coming off a D.C.L. championship last year, the coach had billed the 1984-85 season as a rebuilding year. The year turned out to be a frustrating and disappointing one. If only they had been allowed to play longer, they could have pulled out some of the many close games. There were a lot of close games due to all the long practicing. All the hard work didn’t pay off as much as it did last year, but the improvement was key. The team gained experience by playing in the tournament at Becker Jr. College, where many of the best teams in the state played, including Brook- line. The improvement con- tinued throughout the season, as the scores became closer and closer. The best example was when the team beat Wes- ton after losing to them only a few weeks earlier. It was a game where everything came together for all four quarters. Only winning a few games, the team didn’t qualify for the State Tournament. This, however, doesn't reflect the effort and improvement of the 1984-5 Girls’ Varsity Basketball team. Above Right: Dale Arpino is definite- ly airborne. To the 1984-85 Girls Gymnastics Team: The season had started in November. A time which we will always remember. Our new coach was “Mr. Duse”, when he was easy on us we took a snooze. Then he yelled, but we didn’t mind, ‘Cause we had to work hard all the time. We're glad our Maura was not mean, Willing to help with a new routine. Injuries came, but also gain, And Maura was there to help the pain. Duse and Maura made our pain much less, Which helped us all to be a success. Tommy Tommy, he’s no nicks, He helped us fix our tricks. With the incoming freshmen team, Much potential could be seen. The upperclassmen came back again, Wor ng hard and practicing to the end. We went to the meets ready to fight, And competed with all our might. Always got compliments from the boys, But we usually took it rather mean. With rips, tears, breaks and bruise, This is the fate we will always choose. We lost some meets and won some too, And love of gymnastics we'll never lose. MacDonalds was the place we stopped, And the Secret Santas were really tops. We wish good luck for the teams to come, And hope the family tie continues. A few last words we must make Are go for it and never brake! Keep your spirits rising high, Not down with cookies, cakes or pies. Love always, Steph Lynn Left: Stephanie Gorgone pushes off the uneven bars. Left: The 1984-85 Girls’ Gymnastics Team.
