S.T.O.P. is a national orga- nization which was founded at Northfield Mount Herman by a group of high school stu- dents. STOP exists because high school students care about the earth and its future. We started a chapter at L-S because we were tired of feel- ing helpless as individuals in the face of the accelerating arms race. Our future is at stake. STOP is primarily an informational group which promotes awareness about the nuclear weapons issue. Stu- dent and faculty awareness is the first step towards the re- versal of the nuclear threat and the insurance of peace. Our goal is not only to edu- cate the school community, but also to empower young people and adults by demon- strating that an educated, organized group can make a meaningful contribution to the effort to prevent nuclear war. With this power we can change the national and inter- Back row: Kristin Welch, Suzanne Mel- ley, Kari Williamson, Sharon O'Neil, Lori Pietz, Melissa Bradley, Heather Erskine, Jen Solomon, Kristin Palmer, Cathy Hynes. These goals are reached through discussion, learning, and sponsoring activities geared toward dealing with the nuclear reality and insur- ing peace. STOP is a place where people can ventilate their concerns and frustrations about nuclear issues, and a place where people act on their concerns. “‘Without ac- tion there is only fear and hel- plessness.”’ It is up to young people to confront the threat of nuclear war because it is our future. Each individual has the power to effect change and this pow- er is strengthened by working with others. When young peo- ple act, they motivate adults who are otherwise paralyzed by a sense of powerlessness. Young peo ple have power to influence today’s adults and to make tomorrow’s adults be- come better educated, more effective citizens. They kept much pressure on opposing defenses but were often unable to put the ball in the net. Andy Slikowski, captain Tim Weaver, Dave Aufdehaur, Greg Packer, Doug Brasington and Andy Shpiz played the halfback positions. The halfbacks were usually able to control the pace of the game, while helping on offense as well. This time the L-S defense shined, stopping many scoring threats and proving that they were one of the best in the East. At the end of the game the score was 0-0. It was the first time that L-S had tied Wellesley. The Lincoln-Sudbury Girls Varsity Soccer team completed its best season ever this year with only ten returning players, the team would have to pull it- self together and make many changes. It was a time of firsts for the Warriors. In a total team effort, they were the first team in the Dual County League to win against previously undefeated Con- cord-Carlisle by a score of 2-1. Another great accomplish- ment came in the last regular season game against Wellesley. With the Warriors seated sixth in the state and the Red Raiders seated second, L-S knew they The Warriors went the far- thest they have ever gone in the past season play making it all the way to the semi-finals of the tournament. Overall, it was a victorious season for the War- riors. They proved that they have a great team with each player putting forth tremendous effort and exhibiting excellent sportsmanship. The team will lose seniors, Suzanne Starobin, Kim Meltzer, Lisa Pierce as well as co-capt’s Jen Gottberg and Sue Burtoft. Next year the team looks forward to another victo- rious season. 189 we ete AS Se The 1983 girls JV Soccer team finished up with an out- standing season. The final record of 10-2-2 doesn’t show the effort put forth by a pre- dominantly freshman team, | with only three players return- _ ing from last year. The outlook was for a mediocre season, but _ the team work provided the skill to win. The season began witha winover a strong Wayland |. team . Not knowing what to ex- pect, coach Boisvert worked the team hard. This preparation paid off. Following Wayland, The JV’s proceeded to beat Concord-Carlisle and other DCL foes. The only losses came _ against Wayland and Weston, _ both rapidly rising rival. The offense was sparked by the spectacular playing of Mary Wilson. She led the team in _ scoring and earned herself the title of MVP. Her excellent foot- | work wound itself around every | defense in the league. She was assisted by a talented but small foward line, and halfbacks. The defense was stingy, only allowing a few goals the whole season. This was due to the fan- tastic playing of the two goalies, Rachel Donaldson and Aman- da Lewis, who alternated duties. At the final game the season, the team tied a strong Wellesley club, proving to all that this year’s had the desire to win and the strength to take the JV title next year. This year seemed like a pleasant surprise, as with only three meets to go the Warriors stood with a 4-1 record and right in the thick of things for the title chase. Unfortunately, however, the ‘‘Ghost of Seasons Past”’ caught up with the Waniors, and they dropped those last three meets, finishing up 4-4 overall, right in the mid- dle of the DCL pack. The L-S squad was led by Tim Fisher. The fortitudinous junior had an excel- lent season, winning four races and nev- er placing outside the top three. Senior co-captain Mark Atwood and junior Toby Yos shared the second and third L-S spots all season, and they pulled each other through to some very fine times. The last two scoring places for L-S, fourth and fifth, were picked up by senior co-captain Scott Buckingham and freshman James Benton, who both had some outstanding personal per- formances. Other varsity members who ran well were Dave Allard, Adam Smith, and Eric Rosen. Juniors Tom Kneeland, Jay Holman, and John MacDonald ran well in pre- season practice, and were hoping to be among the top L-S finishers. However, several unfortunate disasters left the trio incapacitated, and they were put on in- jured reserve for the rest of the season. For most of the season, the L-S JV team ran in the varsity race, due to the small size of other schools’ JV squads. This gave the mostly rookie team valuable experience, and many runners’ times dropped significantly. Freshman Keith Kelble and sophomore Charles Had- lock led their teammates, both showing hints of better things to come. Dave Sur- willo, Vernon Nixon, Will Morse, and Richard Wyner, were among the other JV finishers. In comparison to previous Lincoln- Sudbury girls’ Cross-Country team, this year was an overwhelming turnout. Af- ter a lot of hard work, Nancy Wollins, Kelly Daniak, Julie Clifton, Liz Patter- son, Tara Goodwin, and Missy Dense posted some very commendable times. The outlook for next year’s team is an extremely good one, as only Atwood and Buckingham are leaving. Fisher and Yos will be even stronger, forming what could easily be the leagues best duo. Kneeland, Holman, and MacDo- nald should come around, and will be hungry, while Benton, who could be one of L-S’s best sophomore runners ever, won’t be far off the pace. 203 uperior Swimmers Swim Team Members: Co-Captains: Janice Bell and Julie Bump, Lisa Boyce, Leslie Brown, Jill Bump, Julie Buxton, Cyndy Davidson, Joanne Dreher, Lili Eckhardt, Missy Einhorn, Andrea Greenberg, Dana Gutherie, Whitney Hearl, Lisa Knapp, Amy Kolb, Maura Murphy, Julie Nelson, Laura Sonjara, Lisa Wooley, Becky Stewart, Kerri Sussman. Coaches Paul Wilkins and Mrs. Sheila Stewart 204 The 1983 Varsity Girls Swim Team had an unbelievable season. Coaches Sheila Stewart and Paul Wilkins, accompanied by co-captains Janice Bell and Julie Bump, led the twenty-three swimmers and divers to a 7-4-1 season. Along with an outstanding record, the 1983 Swim Team also brought L-S its first swimming trophy. The team put forth a tremendous effort and placed third in the Western Central League Championships, a win everyone was proud of. The team consisted of eight freshmen (Jill Bump, Buxton, Lili Eck- hardt, Dana Guthrie, Amy Kolb, Maura Murphy, Sharon Reutlinger, and Lisa Wooley), eight sophomores (Lisa Boyce, Joanne Dreher, Missy Einhom, and Andrea Greenberg, Whitney Hearl, Laura Sonjara, Becky Stewart, and Ker- ri Sussman), three juniors (Leslie Brown, Julie Bump, and Cyndy David- son), and one senior (Janice Bell). There were also two divers, freshmen Lisa Knapp and junior Julie Nelson, who represented L-S at the sectional championships. The Swim Team hopes that next year and the years to follow will be as rewarding and fulfilling as this season was. 205 In- [= (se) vo ro 5 4 O a © = p) J Sie) 9 oO Be 5 tol oO SE ack row Br , Rebecca iegel, , Capt. Captain Kim Helms saved the team many times with her serves and sets. Cindy Sim- mons, Tina Pangillnan and Karen Cooke carried the spirit throughout every game. Rebecca Shugrue and Karen Siegel, two beginners to the game, played their best every time. Britta Huer kept other teams on their toes with her threatening spikes. Their new coach, Karen Knapp, and assistant coach, Sheri Knapp, both for- mer L-S gymnasts, brought a great deal of the experience to this years team. Karen was the captain of the ’78 team, that won the states, and Sheri was also a member of the same team. Karen con- tinued gymnastics in college, where she won second place on the beam in Divi- sion 1. She also broke a schoolrecord for beam with a 9.45. With two such experiences gymnastsas coaches this team was bound to be number one. The way the team was performing the first half of the season proved that this therory was correct. Within the first three meets alone, the whole teams’ score went up from a 91.2 to a 104.5!! There were other reasons for’ this success other than the coaches: the team had many very talented gymnats, three of whom had brothers or sisters on the team prior. Stephanie Gorgone, J.J. Merra, and Lisa Knapp continued the tradition of fine gymnastics that their siblings had left before them. Stephanie, otherwise known as Animal, was one of the teams most valuable vaulters, and also competed on the bars, successfully. J.J. was a consistent awesome perform- er on beam, and earned a fantastic 7.1 on floor as one of her best scores. Lisa, younger sister of Sheri and Karen, was one of the most valuable all around. Although she is only freshman, she competed last on three of four events. Just imagine what she’ll be like as a senior!! Along with other very talented gym- nasts were captains, Melissa Heiser and Carol Jarvis. Melissa was very strong competitor on bars and vault. She prac- ticed just as hard as in her meets. Carol competed as an all-around with her best event on floor. She was very deter- mined and always gave her all. Cindy Guild joined the team as a junior and started competing on bars that very same year. Juniors were: Lynn Thome and Kim Faber and Stephanie Gorgone Lynn commended herself with beam, vault, and floor, with beam as her best event. Kim competed on beam and floor. Newcommer, Rebecca Shugrue, was dazzling on floor and beam. All of the freshman worked very hard: Lisa Kross, Carol Linburm, and Barbara Jarvis Carol's Sister) all have great talent and by next year all will be all-arounds. This years team was close-knit, like a family, all were supportive of each other and ceased to amazed each other, everyone worked hard and had AN A ING SEASON. “Go For It!’ Back Row (L-R): Coach Eadie, co- captain Reid Blair, Bob Riddle, Chris Wylie, Bob Allenberg, Jeff Vorderor, Jamie McWalter, Mark Dickson, Rusty Edgar, Dave Lannon, Bill Semple, Mike Patti, Bob Tracey, Coach Doyle and Coach Cusiek. Every member on the roster stood out in a special way, whether they won or lost. Being a young team, the members should fare well in their future pursuits. The more experienced wres- tlers on the team stood out and gave the team a lot of spirit. Sophomore David Allard proved to be a very strong wres- tler and contributed many points to the team’s overall score. The team found another de- pendable wrestler in tri-captain Howie Pollock. He has steadily gotten stronger and more ex- perienced. Howie is a hopeful for the sectionals and also the Tt wi state tournament. Bill Sifferlen is also expected to wrestle in the state tournament. Bill’s wres- tling skills have improved and have contributed to the team. The final tri-Captain is Shawn Pearson. Shawn has come on strong this season, as he gave the team discipline and helped many of the new members with moves and counters to moves. The other wrestlers include: Mike Casey, Dana Farmer, Mandell Rankin, Sean D’Ange- lo, Noel Dixon, Dave Gross- man, Al Turner, Chris Cotto, Lance Robbins, Reza Atabaki, Andy Carlstrom, Scott Reid, Byron Willis, Mark Golden, and Willie Monroe. OH! et | SUDBURY The 1983-84 Girls Winter Track team was led by Senior Tri-Captains Lisa Briand, Missy Dence, and Anne Treacy. All three were four year veterans. They were joined by Anney Giobbe, Tara Goodwin and Glynnis Grathwohl; three talented seniors who made major con- tributions to this year’s squad. Juniors Eileen Smith, Britta Heuer, and Pat Lane rounded out the cast of veterans along with sprinter Sue Cutter. New Coach Eileen Murphy also had a large group of sophomores and freshmen who added to the team’s character. Glynnis Grathwohl was always num- ber one in the Shot Put and Anne Trea- cy won most of her 600 yard races against the tough Dual County competi- tion. Lisa Briand, Kelly Daniak, Missy Dence, Anney Giobbe, Tara Goodwin, Deniz Hamarat, Britta Heuer, Susie Jar- vis, Pat Lane, Jane Moroney, Eileen Smith and Nancy Wollins collected the majority of points for L-S. The promising freshmen and sopho- mores included Julie Clifton, Amia Croom, Kristen Donovan, Stephanie Engborg, Tessa Handlock, Deniz Hamarat, Alyssa Hammond, Mary Beth Holman, Heidi Lehman, Liz Patterson, Indra Priede, and Jen Walsh in the mid- dle distance and sprint events. The dis- tance corp. included Kelly Daniak, Heidi Hafameister, Susie Jarvis, Jane Moroney, and Nancy Wollins. The hurdlers, shot and high jumpers con- sisted of Emily Cooke and Amy Kolb, along with many of the others. Lane, Smith, Briand, and Treacy made up a fine relay team. The girls were generally out-classed by most of the teams in their superb league, but the few veterans performed as expected. the younger, newer girls provided many pleasant surprises. De- spite everything else, the team had spir- it, and each member had concern for every other runner.
