Do you know that there are 370 seniors, 170 faculty members, 16 fall sports teams, 24 activities or clubs, and only 152 days to combine it all into a yearbook? Have you ever tried to spell Diego Pokropwicz, or decided among the titles for the Junior Prom, such as “Junior Spring Fling,” “‘The Celtics Win” — apparently the main attraction, or ‘“‘A Night to Remember’’ — for whatever reason? Perhaps the most difficult aspect of the 1983 Dyad was trying to think of something favorable to place under a teacher’s name. Creativity is not wise in many cases, although it would bring humor to the faculty section. Humor, however, is not always the answer. After all is said, working on the Dyad has had its rewards. Clearly, what is more fun than proofreading 240 senior quotations at 4:00 a.m.? Enjoy it! New editors, writers and reporters make the pa- per’s annual reconstruction inevit- able. However, 1983’s Promethean had more than a reconstruction, it had a resurrection. Besides the Editors-in-Chief, the people who made this resurrection possible were its staff of over thirty members. Dynamic and efficient, one of these members, Sports Editor Diana Welch, was relentless in her pursuit of contributors and prolific in her articles about hockey. As an editor and a player, she was on the ball. Equally valuable was Typeset- ting Editor Sandra Liepins. Sandra had not only fine motor coordi- nation but also a collegiate dic- tionary mind. This facility for spell- ing freed the other editors from painful weekends with Webster’s. Other hard workers included Shut- ter Bugs Lucy Buchan, Andy Gold- stein, and Raoul Berman, Computer Cowboy Daniel Noyes, and Busi- ness Boss Ron MacInnis. However, the most important innovation in staffing was that board members were chosen according to precon- ceived standards of ability not past friendships with the editors. Besides these innovations in per- sonnel, the Promethean also con- tained innovations in format. In- stead of last year’s blank spaces, this year’s editions contained new articles; instead of last year’s ab- stract doodles, this year’s editions contained political cartoons; and instead of last year’s irrelevant can- dids, this year’s editions contained relevant photographs. In addition, the paper alloted equal space to arti- cles of equal importance and con- sistent sections to articles of consis- tent interest. As one faculty member ut it, the paper no longer suffered rom ‘‘visual diarrhea”’. It also recovered from contributor constipation; its editors turned away articles instead of begging for them. In fact, the Promethean’s sec- ond issue was the largest in the pa- per’s history — sixteen pages of which eleven were in English, one in German, two in French, and three in Spanish. The 1983 Promethean was the first to contain three foreign languages and this language section was commended by the Education- al Testing Service. Besides foreign languages, the paper also empha- sized controversial issues. Two full pages contained editorials and front page headlines included: ‘‘Cheating at L.S.”, “Draft Registration”, and “Arms Race: Day of Dialogue”. However, several issues were too controversial for some people and for others, not controversial enough. In particular, one cartoon contained symbols and slogans that offended many members of the school and the community. On the other hand, many others backed freedom of speech. Another set of cartoons satirized the Christmas season with sexual references and violent scenes. The Promethean’s editorial board was divided among themselves and within themselves over these cartoons but so far free- dom of speech has overruled hu- man relations. Many members of the editorial board do not feel that the cartoon is part of a freedom of payee issue. For the Promethean, the “cartoon controversy” was a baptism through fire, a period of soul searching necessary in any re- surrection. Due to this resurrection, the pap- er earned its title. Like the mythical Pometheus, the paper has brought the light of knowledge to others. However, in 1983, it also faced a question which Prometheus him- self faced: how to be a responsible paper but not a Promethean bound. The Girls Varsity soccer team was looking forward to a successful season with their best team in recent years. They entered the season with an abundance of depth, talent and enthusiasm, three main characteristics which will get any team far. With ten returning veterans and twelve newcomers, they remembered the panes of last year, and were ready to etter their record. They started the season with an 8-0 thrashing of Lexington, and from then on they never let up. They went on to score fifty-two more goals, all coming from their strong offensive line. The defense was just as good, limiting opponents to twelve goals in eighteen games, while the goalies notched eleven shutouts. A main factor to the teams success was their close rapport with each other. All twenty-two members and the coach worked together, and pulled for one another to gain victory. They were dedicated to hard work and fought until the final minute whether ahead by two or down by two. From early September to mid November, when the mittens and hats had to be brought out, the Warriors kept on winning close games while having fun. One of the most exciting games all season was against arch rival Concord-Carlisle. It was a hard fought game, with both teams putting out 101 percent from beginning to end, resulting in a scoreless tie. The Warriors ended the season in second place but their eleven victories qualified them for the state i tournament. Masconomet became the team’s first victim in post season play, succumbing 5-0 to the red hot Warriors. Senior captain Martha McNamara notched four goals, breaking a single season scoring record at L-S. She went on to score five more in tourney action, giving her 26 on the season, eight better F uJ] than the old mark. McNamara’s three year total amounted to 53, also a new school record. The team went on to win two more games before falling to Wellesley in the quarterfinals, ending their season with a successful 14-3-1 record, their best ever. The season will long be remembered because the Warriors challenged their rivals, fought, and survived . . . for it was the “Eye of the Tiger” that carried them through. 209 210 Back row: Leslie Hughes, Perry Kellstedt, Suzanna Lawson, Barbie Eisenhower, Brenda McNamara, Jill Gibson, coach Boisvert. CREE Ee tie SI a, Cael ok a ee gm Ls SREs ca Following last year’s dismal rec- ord of 3-7, Lincoln-Sudbury’s foot- ball coaches and fans knew that the only turn the varsity football squad could make this year would be a turn for the better. However, no one ever expected the Warriors to turn in the kind of performance they did this past season. Not only did L-S capture the D.C.L. crown for the first time since 1976, but the Warriors made a serious quest for the Super Bowl — climbing all the way to the Boston Globes 3 spot at one time. Co-Captains Jim Finamore and Rob Mathews led an extremely tal- ented group of football players. Fina- more started on both offense and defense and led the team in rushing. Mathews, who was touted as the best player on the squad, went down in the season’s opener, lost to the team for the entire season. However, his ability as a leader matched his talent as a football player. Offensively, L-S was sparked by the superb passing of Junior Chris DeFranco, he had the best season of any quarterback in the school’s his- tory. Joining Finamore and De- Franco in the offensive backfield were juniors Mark Johnson and Jerome Croom. Seniors Har McPherson and Jamie Jones, as well as sophomore Mike DeFranco, led the Warrior receiving crew. Two-way starters Dave Murphy and Mike Murray led a stingy War- rior Defense which yielded only a touchdown per game. Other senior stalwarts were linemen Rob Gabbe, Ranford Richardson, Joe DeFranco and defensive back punter Scott Semple. Offensively Chris Wofford and Brian Pietz contributed a great deal. Another key factor was the War- riors coaching staff. Fifth year head coach Tom Lopez had established L-S as a worthy contender for the D.C.L. crown over the past few years. His assistants were Mike Newell, Mike Graceffa and also Pete Pietz. Hopefully, this year’s team will serve as a turning point for L-S foot- ball, establishing the Warriors as a formidable opponent. 221 ete ed he 3 “ Of aay - ™ s | WOhaittaing a Re ee 224 Back row: Jeremy Faye, Tim Cor- coran, Tim Kassner, Tom Swank, Adam Glist, Dave Lannon, Bill Sem- ple, Jeff Fitts, John Hicky, Paul Hew- itt. Coach McMahon was pleased by the turnout of nearly forty kids for the “tryout.” The team started off with L.S.D. (long slow distance) and then started doing speed (three quarter mile intervals.) Both the returning runners and the rookies were surprised, and worn out by the intensity of these early workouts. The results of this hard work, however, surfaced qu as the Warriors posted eet times from the first meet on. The team was led by senior co- captain Jonathan Franklin. Franklin placed in the top three in all the dual meets and also placed well in several invitationals. After Franklin the L-S Warriors were bunched closely together. The 2 man for most of the season was Freshman Bryan Cannon. Cannon’s high point of the season was his 2nd place finish at the D.C.L. championships. Despite his allegations that he is only a half miler Bryan has great potential as a X-C runner. The 3 spot was shared by Sophomores Tom Kneeland, Toby Yos, Tim Fischer, and Junior Scott Buckingham. These four runners, along with Cannon, are the foun- dation for next year’s team — defi- nitely a team which will be shooting for the league champion- ship. Mark Atwood was hoping to be, and probably would have been, one of the top L-S Warriors this year but he was stricken with a mysterious illness which left him incapacitated and McMahon enraged. The varsity team was rounded out by senior co-captain Andre Pe- ters and senior Chris Roby — both of whom were dedicated and an inspiration to the younger run- ners. The J.V. team also showed signs of future strength for L-S. Their record was 5-3 and they won the Middlesex News Invitational. The freshmen usually competed with the J.V. but when they had their own race they dominated. The Freshmen won both the Middlesex News Invitational and the D.C.L. Freshmen titles. Despite the fact that they did not have an official team, several girls did train and compete throughout the season. Tara Goodwin, Nancy Wollins and Britta Heuer all worked hard and placed well in the competition they had. Cadally the X-C team is me- diocore and is led by several se- niors who carry the team. This year the record was no different (2-6) but six of the top eight run- ners are underclassmen. These runners are among the best in the league and should lead L-S to great success in Cross-country over the next few years. 1982 Junior Varsity Cross-Country. Her earthiness and loftiness often make us wonder whether the space she lived in has a dimension that we have not yet reached. But in her own way — she shared those dimensions of herself. Doris, the child. Doris, the life-partner. Doris, the sister. Doris, the friend. Doris, the skier. Doris, the beach bum. Doris, the music-lover. Doris, the colleague. And above all, Doris, the lover of life. ‘Doris took that last chance so that she would live — and she did it her way.” From Doris Bradin: Eulogy By Lillian Scherban 260 Rita Ross As a teacher she possessed the qualities of comparison, interest, integrity, loyal- ty and above all love. She also was an example to us all of what caring is about. Despite her illness, she was always con- cerned about others’ interest. She main- tained her keen sense of humor right until the end. For those of us who work with students, it is sometimes easy to forget that they are a group with constant teenage uncer- tainities. For Rita there was a consistent understanding that they needed a warm, supportive environment and learning would follow. Rita was a teacher’s teacher who gave so much of herself and asked little in return. Today, Rita, we miss you in the class- room, but never from our lives. Marion Hawley Marion will long be remembered by her many friends as a devoted and hard- working member of the school support staff. Her intense caring attitude to- wards students, shown to the hundreds who over the years called on Marion for the little things, made Marion’s life what it was ... A person who ‘‘cared” about those she came in contact with. Marion drove the school’s private school bus for many years. She thought nothing of get- ting up at 2:00 am to arrive at a distant destination to pick up tired and hungry students and faculty members.
