As you go into the future and things slip through your fingers, when you feel that you’ re getting caught up in a whirlpool and you just can’t get a grip on anything, remember, you can always take a minute for yourself. It is a unique group in that it attracts students from all walks of life at the high school. It is best defined not as a clique, but rather as a melting pot of the various cliques at the school. De- spite the diversity of its members, however, the chorus maintains an identity of its own. The people in it are unified by a common interest in sing- ing, which helps overcome many dif- ferences in personalities and interests. Yet the identity of chorus runs much deeper than music. Members of the chorus are essentially members of large family, capable of uniting when necessary but otherwise independent. During the past three years the Class of 1982 has made a significant con- tribution to the chorus “family”, and has shared a number of memorable experiences. The undisputable head of the chor- us family is Bob Wentworth, director. His love for music has inspired many of us, and has led to exciting perfor- mance of some major choral pieces. Next in line is Dean Aldrich, head of Special Chorus, whose devotion and sense of humor have given him the tools to handle that group. Ellisa Petu- kian, our pianist, has uncomparable talent and patience with us. That proved to be an exciting first year, marked by our television per- formance of ‘‘Carol of Bells’? on Channel 4 news, and by our trip to Toronto. The trip was an invaluable experience, both musically and social- ly. The high light was when we walked into an “informal” adjudication dres- sed in T-shirts and jeans, only to dis- cover the other entrants clad in tux- edos and long dresses. The ‘“‘Lincoln-Sudbury High School Choir from Connecticut” will surely never be forgotten in Canada. As Juniors, the Class of 1982 chor- us members caught the flavor of the Communist world, as we ventured to the country of Romania. This was a trip which affected all of us profound- ly, as we experienced life behind the Iron Curtain, and shared our music with the people. The details are too voluminious to put down, but perhaps a short list of people and events will bring back some important memories to those who went: Mrs. Rasco’s ulcers; color glow candles; Tarom Air- lines; Carolyn; Peter and Feletia; Poftim?; meat and potatoes; ‘‘Trei col- or’; lasi; Polaroid cameras; the peasant village; plum brandy; second festive dinner; concerts; buna dimineata, George; “‘let the sun shine’; Bucharest; the last night. As Seniors, we seem to have mel- lowed a bit. The chorus spent this Fall working on Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ for The Homecoming Concert, and will per- form ‘‘Carmina Burana’’ in the Spring. We may not go on a trip but it proves to be an exciting year musical- ly. Perhaps it gives us a chance to reflect on how we ’ve grown during our years in chorus — how we have affected the institution, and how it has affected us. None of us will forget the three annual Christmas parties at the Wentworth’s, the singing at Fanueil Hall, the Springthing concerts, or caroling in the halls at L-S. And hope- fully, none of us will forget the friends we have made and the emotions we have shared. As one generation pas- ses to another, so does the chorus “family” change hands with the grad- uation of the Class of 1982. The Lincoln-Sudbury Concert Band is alive and well and beginning at last to enjoy a solid positive reputa- tion both in and out of the school building. Substantially enlarged over the last few years, the band sports a repetoire that ranges widely from the classics to ‘“The Empire,” from Bee- thoven to Marvin Hamlisch, and with a healthy dose of Big Band Jazz thrown in along the way. But the band is more than meets the eye, for it is really many groups in one: The Lincoln-Sudbury Baby Grand Ensemble is a twenty-two piece jazz band that had its debut in the 1980 Homecoming Concert, and continues to draw cheers at each performance. The Band has also fathered a kind of informal pep band that helps keep spirits up on the football field, and even a festive little ““Oompah” band that plays for its supper at the annual Octoberfest. In 1981 the Concert Band won high praise at the Toronto International Music Festival, for its several perfor- mances, even being called ‘“‘the best at the festival” by the former director of the United States Marine Corps White House Band! Travel plans for Spring, 1982 are still being finalized, but in- clude invitations for festivals and tours to Washington, D.C., Denver, Colora- do, and even Israel. Any way you look at it, the road ahead looks wide and open and this group is clearly in high gear. 186 Activities Concert Band Jazz Band ” a ’ ” f' i! The Lincoln-Sudbury Baby Grand Ensemble came into being only in De- cember, 1980, and is well on its way already to being a centerpiece of the whole music program at LS. Saxes, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section combine to produce exciting music from the grand oldies of the Big Bands of the 40’s and 50’s to the funk and jazz-rock of the 70’s and 80’s. The ensemble is a select group of twenty-two who study not only how to read the charts but how to improvise as well, a difficult and challenging skill that lies at the very heart of all jazz. The ensemble has already won stand- ing ovations from local audiences, and two members of the group have even won admission to the North-Eastern Massachusetts District High School Jazz Ensemble, a high honor indeed. You may not have heard them yet, but they’ll be hard to miss in 1981 and beyond, making appearances every- where from the athletic fields to the cafeteria, from the auditorium to the gym. I wouldn’t even be surprised to catch them on tour in Washington or New York this Spring trying very hard to put Lincoln-Sudbury on the map in the world of jazz, and doing well in the process. It acts as an announcer of local events and a place where anyone can voice his her ideas. It is an educational experience for those who want to learn about all areas of radio operating from actual “‘on the air’ broadcasting to promotion and engineering. WYA, to us personally, has been a creative outlet for our sometimes biz- zare ideas, a place where grannies can fly space shuttles, rockets can be attacked by pygmies and prehistoric birds, and students (during our “Question of the week’’) can tell the world their answers to important questions (Where would you rather be?’’). Brian Harvey: The immediate future of our coun- try seems to me to have two looming prospects, both gloomy. If the pow- ers-that-be proceed as stupidly, timid- ly, and “‘politically” as they have been doing, there will be a bad breakdown and the upsurge of a know-nothing fascism of the right. Incidentally, let me say that | am profoundly onim- pressed by our so-called educational system when, as has happened, Gov- eror Wallace comes from the South as a candidate in Northern states and receives his highest number of votes (in some cases a majority) in suburbs that have had the most years of schooling, more than 16. The other prospect-which, to be frank, seems to me to be the goal of the school-monks themselves-is a progressive regimentation and brain- washing, on scientific principles, directly toward a fascism-of-the- center, 1984. Certainly this is not any- body’s deliberate purpose; but given the maturing of automation, and the present dominance of the automating spirit in schooling, so that all of life becomes geared to the automatic sys- tem, that is where we will land. -Paul Goodman Compulsing Mis-Education, 1964 Activities 201 Treasurer Elaine Cannalonga; Secre- tary Kelley Cronin; Vice-President Kim Jaixen; President Leslie McCall. Many people don’t know how much time and effort it takes for the completion of a successful yearbook. Each member of the 1982 Dyad staff has leamed and exemplified many new talents in order to help complete the book. Our first deadline was in November, one half of the book had to be completed by that time. For that deadline, the Dyad staff had to complete faculty, underclass- men and sports layouts, as well as lean strategic methods of how to beat one another in games of Intellivision soccer. After our mini-tournament, Sports Mana- ger John Healy was the victor, but then it was time to resume our work. The final deadline approached quickly in February, and we wanted to have a climactic ending. We were very success- ful. The weekend before the deadline, seven staff members assembled for our final attack. We began Saturday morning and finished Sunday moming; otherwise known as the famed “All-Nighter”, a common term and occurrence with year- book staffs. Five members worked through the night, including Senior Man- ager Betsy Duggan, the only female among tired male colleagues. The book was finished Monday aftemoon — and the celebration began. The 1982 Dyad was completed and it was done on time. We celebrated our success with a din- ner at the Wayside Inn, and by attending a rock concert in March. It is true that to work on a yearbook staff takes a lot of time, effort and dedica- tion, but for those who cary through with the work there is also a great deal of gratification and fun! Everyone, that is, except the players themselves. Even before the season eh the team knew they could do it. This drive was the one thing that motivated the team. It wasn’t tremendous skill, although the team was not without it; and it wasn’t any one superstar who scored all the goals. It was the Warriors’ tremendous ambi- tion. They started their season. off with a bang, by beating long time rival Acton-Boxborough. From then on, they never let up. Whenevera good play was executed or a goal scored, the majority of the players were sure to be involved. Losing only one game this season, the Warriors couldn’t have done it without the effort of every single play- er. From their private psyche sessioris before the game to their Becniine Lin- coln-Sudbury jumping-jacks on the field, the spirit of the Warriors was the one thing that pulled them through. Everyone supported each other, both on and off the field, and this team togetherness sparked their incredible desire — the desire to recapture the Dual-County-League title, and put it back in our trophy case where it belongs. eo +A We af coma Fall Sports 2 ‘ BME, 228 Fall Sports Fall Sports 229 Back Row: Doreen Brown, Maddy Glist, Liz Reilly, Rebecca Bekampis, Kim Taylor, Mary Jane Plamondon, Sue Burtoft, Tammy Wolfe, Jen Gott- berg, Martha McNamera, Anne Kutenplon, Nancy Halter, Coach Nor- man Swicker. Leading the attack at left inner was co-captain Catrin Pittack, our MVOP and a DCL all-star. Her good dodging techniques and strong play- making ability deserve special praise. Our team had great amounts of strength, energy, and talent this year, but it never would have come together without Dianne Pullo’s bright enthusiasm and quiet assurance. At the begin- ning of the season the group had high hopes and aspirations which included both the league and the state cham- pionships. Coach Jim Dusenbury felt that these goals could be realized. He con- sidered this team one of the best groups he had ever had in his long coaching career. The major reason for his team’s consistent success is the un- usual combination of knowledge and friendliness which he brings into the gym. All of the gymnasts feel close to “Duse”’ because he tries to make each one realize that he has a special talent. Another important reason for the team’s success was the leadership provided by the team’s five seniors. Back Row: Tim Carey, Bob Koss, Mark Schlosser, Jay Dusenbury, Doug Furcitini, Jon Keevil, Brian Low, Dick Cicciu, Simon Bollen, John Rol- lins, Joe O'Donnell. Front Row: Billy Mitchell, Todd Wallingford, Steve Blessington, Eric Malerbi, Jim Fina- more, Co-Captains: Elliot Glist, Phil Gorgone, Adam Smith, Mike Lagras- sa, Mark Gleason, Beran Peters. 268 Winter Sports Co-captains Elliot Glist and Phil Gor- gone made their contributions in two ways: with their skill as gymnasts in each of the events, and by the fine examples they set for the younger members of the team. The other three seniors, Jon Keevil, Doug Furciniti, and Simon Bollen, aided the team’s effort with both enthusiasm and high scores. Although the loss of this talent can- not avoid hurting the team next year, juniors Eric Malerbi, Steve Blessing- ton, Bob Ross, and Jim Finamore, along with many other returning gym- nasts, will strive to improve on this year’s record. The successes of this year will give experience to the under- classmen who next year will have to help Lincoln-Sudbury maintain its proud position in boys’ gymnastics in Massachusetts. ae ee ; | i ‘ Winter Sports 269 ra Q Winter Sports Winter Sports 271 Back Row: Katie Stimmell, Amanda Wagner, Kristin Gatchel, Debbie Scialabba, Hanna Munroe, Lynne Thome, Elise Lemire, Jane Read, Karen Novak, Carol Jarvis, Heather Dow. This year’s team has no real all-stars, but rather a blend of hard working athletes. Coach Pat McMa- hon has constructed a well balanced, winning team. Co-captains Jon Campbell and Andy Clark along with Dexter Blandin have combined their talents to com- pletely dominate the league in the 45 yd. high hurdles. Along with the hur- dles, the distance events have proved to be the strong-points in this year’s team. Peter Fink and Tony Scafidi have become an almost unbeatable one-two punch in the 1000. In the mile, newcomer Jon McMorrow has proved himself to be one of the best milers in the league, with Curt Died- rich not far behind. Rob Mathews, Sailing Adler, and Jeff LaCure, along with Mark Johnson, have rescued an ailing 40 yd. dash. In the 600, Holly Moul- trie has become a dominating force and one of the teams major strong points. Mark Crosby has picked up where he left off last year and is now almost unbeatable in the shot put. In the high jump, Glen Frazier and Dex- ter Blandin have turned the team’s only real weak spot into a productive event. The success of the 1981-82 team has also depended greatly on the third places picked up in various events by the young runners. These talented young runners insure nothing but success for the trackmen in years to come. ; Girls’ Track Although the Girls’ Track team was unable to regain the Dual County League title this year, the season was nevertheless a very successful one. In addition to our scheduled meets, we participated in a Marathon relay held in honor of Alberto Salazar, who holds the world record for the twenty six mile run. One of the largest teams participating, we did very well and placed second in the event, helping to raise funds to improve the track at Wayland High School. Our team spirit was excellent, and even though we weren’t able to regain the Dual County League title during Coach Haworth’s final year, we hada terrific season. After three years of dismal, not to mention snowless win- ters, the “dusting” on December 12th and 13th started the 1982 ski season off on the right foot. Under the leadership of Coach Gra- ham Taylor, the Cross-Country squad received some much needed gqui- dance. Quickly, it became evident that skiers Frank Mainville, Jon Langmuir, Susan Janes, Andrew White, Dave Spinler, Drew Wollinsack, and Laurel Horne had natural ability; and with the honing from Mr. Taylor, they rapidly developed efficient technique. The Alpine squad, under the gui- dance of head Coach Rick Mullen, also took shape. Standout skiers for the boys’ team were captain Matt Rand and Andy Lehman. Returning from last seasons team were Bob Cobuzzi, Rich Wittenberg, Dan Rubin, Daryll Hotch, Dave Strauss, Back Row: Andy White, Andy Lap- kin, Rich Wittenberg, Brooks King, Paul Falco, Scott Richardson, Steve Walker, Josh Serota, John Langmuir, Drew Wollinsack, Robert Hahn. These ten were backed up by fifteen more strong skiers just waiting to step in if someone faltered. The girls also had a pair of excep- tional skiers: captains Jennifer Law- son and Anita Arnum. However, these two were not alone either, they were teamed up with other fine skiers such as Beth Mitchell, Erica Lapkin, Amy Golder, Laurel Horne, Karen Knoll, and freshmen Julie Fisch, Lucey Birkett, and Susan Birkett. In all, the season promised a great deal of excitement. 1983 promises to be another spec- tacular year with only three boys and four girls graduating this spring. With the team spirit and cooperation of this year being carried on to next, the only thing that could thwart the team would be — no snow. Think snow!!
