Kirk, The Day Before Publication On Saturday night March 4 at 11:30 P.M. the guys were having a party down at the First National Parking Lot. I was on my way home when a Police Cruiser pulled up in back of me, so I had to wait. Officer Gogan started making kids pick up the beer cans, then he called in for assistance, then George Burney came to the scene. Officer Gogan asked me my name and it sounded familiar, then he asked me if I had anything to do with the Core News- letter and I said yes. Then he asked me if I wrote the article that told about the 4-12 shift, I said NO, then he told me what could happen to the person that wrote it. This year the shifts were changed so it’s not the 4-12 shift that the certain ones were on so all the officers on the 4-12 now aren’t the ones. Officer Gogan said to me the person who wrote could be charged with slander. Editors in Chief DEAR ESMERELDA or Advice to Young Lovers Dear Esmerelda: I am due to get married in two weeks. My problem is if I marry this guy I will be sexually deprived. He hates sex. Confused Dear Confused: If I were in your shoes, I would get another guy or tell your boy- friend the facts of life. A Slight Break Capricorn: Dec. 22-Jan. 19 Fights may come out be- tween you and a friend, but don’t worry about it, it will pass. Monday, Keith Shaw went to the Natick Mall and this kid gave him some loose talk, so Keith went to jack him up and this Framingham kid pulled a knife on Keith, so Keith let him go. an interview with the principal I interviewed Mr. Ruliffson last Monday. Mr. Ruliffson is 41 years old and his favorite sports are soccer and track. His favorite place for a vacation is the Cape and Maine. He does not know how much he weighs. He is a principal because he likes to be with teenagers, and he has kids himself. the core newsletter ae) 26 pe Uo = x N sepasibisiranav tise ities stagecrait YABE opices odson, Joe Mewborn, Brian Greene, Mark Fitzger- ialley, John Irish, Ed Haley, Doug Grant, Scott Baldwin, pie: ; FRONT: Bruce Norling, Craig Larsen, Tim, Mark Irby, Rick Gallerani, Jim O’ Malley. I do not pick my nose, I am queen of the dance and . I am demure and undress in good taste, never King, letting my nipples show their rings. I am queen, subtle, sweet, dance, let feet curl like a child’s kite, and vicious, my body fragrant, I am queen, and deceptive, a woman’s body, watched through the window. — Sue Wheeler Note: This is 3 poems. Marginal lines are-one Indented lines are another, Read together still another. One day, walking around the park By chance it occurred to me That I would like to be walking arm in arm. To be in style, you have to love someone But, for me, to get along a little more than well Would make me feel guilty. I see others walking and talking together And I envy them. As much as I long to be like them For me it cannot be so. — Lynn Hamlin COUSIN by J. Mason Alexis hadn’t wanted to see Charles. He rode towards her now, his back straight, shoulders forward, staring ahead. Alexis couldn’t see the eyes, the wide brimmed hat hid the upper half of his face. They rode toward each other. Fifteen feet apart, twenty times around the world far closer, able to speak ten thou- sands words wouldn’t have been enough. The dust hung around the rhythmic hooves. At the last possible second, Stuart’s hat swept from his head. He watched his second cousin smile uncertainly. Her canteen and tuck bag swung from the saddle as she followed the dust trails to the hills. He moved on. Rather ferociously, because his cousin made him feel shy and this unnerved him, he smoked his pipe. ‘The smoke trailed behind him. He looked at the sky. A full 360° sweep revealed the same endless blue. Beneath the habitual squint, Stuart’s eyes reflected the sky’s col- ouring. He frowned now, the sun was high. His roan horse responded to the pressure of his hands and knees. eK KK Caroline paused with a bowl of biscuit dough in her arms. She watched Neefe, Charles Stuart’s dog, bound up the sloping incline to meet the horse and rider moving swiftly across the high plateau. The dog leaped the fences, running diagonally up the hill. She watched, fascinated, as Stuart wheeled his horse around to face the station and Neefe. The horse proceeded to dance impatiently. Being a station horse, he was very independent. Caroline could see even a horseman like Stuart was having difficulty staying on the animal. The three of them started off at a mad gal- lop, Neefe falling far behind the cantankerous horse, straining to capture the momentum he’d lost when waiting for Neefe. She snorted. ‘“‘Horses and dogs, indeed!” She had real problems. What to do with that girl. Caroline’s black face nfs creased. She plopped down the bowl on the rough hewn kitchen table. The biscuit was stiff. She began to sweat. The huge kitchen stretched from the front of the station to the rear. Opening the back door she propped it open witha 4 wedge of rubber. Between the rows of laundry, an exten- sive garden was visible. For the first time in her life, the. practical woman had allowed herself some flowers. To- wards her plants, Caroline had almost maternal feelings. So delicate, so dependent upon their environment, she — thought. Like the girl. She leaned i in the doorway. The lanky black woman walked to the clotheslines and took down the girl’s bright tops. The strong sun faded ev- | erything. Not that the stockmen or Stuart cared. Fero- — ciously she eyed the vicious tears in the men’s clothing. — Caroline held Alexis’ blood red sweater against one of — Stuart’s faded shirts. She frowned. Since boyhood, he’d — shoved his sleeves up his arms; the creases were perma- nent. The crisp, fashionable sweater made the shirt look © more decrepit than ever. Briskly she brought Alexis’ clothes inside and bute them over a chair. With efficiency, she set the biscuits on ; the trays and set them in the ovens. ‘Caroline had worked for the Stuarts since early child- — hood. Stuart’s mother came to depend on her and after her — death, Charles had become Caroline’s charge, though his _ embarrassment would have been great, had he admitted it. When the girl came, Caroline had been ready to be- _ Siew itlal sag ¥ =f m7 ee ae om enn a {out ” ay, Oreee tei Sa aren aS Bas a) passa ay a ee eee friend her. None of them had realized how young she was_ and how affected by the shock of solitude. Caroline took the well-used kettle from its cterialiyas _ burning hot plate, and poured the water into a tea pot. She strained the tea and sat down with bread and jam to en-— joy morning tea. There was a scratching on the screen door. Caroline — opened the door, to a ragged offspring of Stuart’s dog. | He was limping and looked famished. a she moved to clean, doctor and feed him. Charles Stuart and the Aboriginal woman stood. at opposite ends of the long veranda. It was a shaded room 3 with its cane furniture, and through numerous windows, — the front paddocks and barren hills were visible. The occu- pants of the room stood, one pair of brown eyes, one pair NPG ye PY EPR pA eS Cer : : : vy of blue squinting 2 at the hills, willing a Ae to become visible. Caroline turned from the view, her folded arms unfold- _ ing to strike a noise on the piano. Stuart turned. He’d heard Alexis play, although she halted when she knew of his presence. He shoved the hat on his head and strode towards the veranda door. Caroline watched him walk, trying to inter- pret the strides as hopeful or hopeless. As Stuart and | horse became a mere speck on the trail to the hills, she turned around. Her hand rested again on the piano. Stu- pidly, she knocked some music from the stand. Across the - first page of the folder, inscribed in Gothic letters, were _ the words, “Sonata quasi una Fantasia”. They meant nothing to the woman. Underneath the grand lettering was the childish signature, Alexis Henderson. A tear slipped from Caroline’s eye. At ten-thirty, Caroline’s head rested on the kitchen table. She’d made preparations for any emergency that might be expected. The men had eaten silently and faster than usual. Grunting, the chairs were pushed back, lan- terns lit and the search resumed. The lights flickered about the hills. At fifteen minute intervals, whistles were detect- able. Caroline waited for a gunshot. Someone opened the door for Stuart. Caroline’s head _ was turned towards the door. The age wrinkles had taken on a new intensity that night. Alexis moaned. Caroline woke and half-ran to the girl. The old woman and Stuart carried the girl to a couch on the veranda. Behind them, the trackers and stockmen _. helped themselves to tea and scones, while discussing the search. Caroline shut out the quiet babble of voices and made her way to the couch. She took off the blanket and crude ‘splint to reveal a grotesque break in Alexis’ right leg. Car- oline had seen many broken limbs such as this. The hills were rock filled and horses deserved a minimum of trust. She drew her fingertips over Alexis’ cut, swelling face. Faced with destruction many times, Caroline became assured. The doctor, radioed hours earlier, ould arrive the next ‘Morning. Stuart set her leg. At one point in the procedure, Alexis began crying. Stuart panicked, he watched in awe as with a few simple words and movements, Caroline qui- eted the girl. Caroline could see by Alexis’ wound that her horse had thrown her a fair distance. The animal returned sometime after the search party, to be coolly received at best. But Caroline concentrated on the girl. There would be no holding back in relationships, no forced silence or sound- less pity anymore. Those had driven the child to the hills for comfort and solace, when she couldn’t find it in hu- mans. Caroline looked at the broken leg and shivered. She would nurse the girl and then teach her to live in a desert where words were chosen and few. Caroline studied Stuart’s face, He looked younger than death, older than life. His huge hands gnarled, wrinkled and calloused, supported his head as he straddled a round- ed wicker chair. From his motionless position, she guessed he was asleep. Alexis opened her eyes and began to cry again. Caroline started across the room but Stuart was there before her. His left hand held her right, his right awkwardly patting her enclosed hand. The noise halted; the hollow eyes stared at Stuart, then Alexis went to sleep. He held the hand for a long while, then placed it with infinite care upon the couch. Caroline touched Stuart’s shoulder. He started, then gave an experimental smile. She checked the words upon her tongue. Again she touched Stuart, as he was adjusting Alexis’ blanket. The three seemed like one. Perhaps the words might never need be said, Caroline thought, Caro- line hoped. | | BLIND WALK My journey begins in the headwaters of a teasing stream. I was interviewing Joe Kleiser. Like many other people, I had spent hours in a similar location, talking, remembering, dreaming, planning. But never trying to find out about Joe Kleiser. One of the first qualities one realizes when meeting the man is that one doesn't have to be tense, guarded, seeking, inquisitive: Joe Kleiser is there, solid, large, funny, kind, warm and, above all, open. After a few minutes of inane ques- tions his face became puzzled: like myself, he couldn't quite fathom what we were doing. The feeling, the expression, the situation were much like a Monday morning in school, two days after finishing a thirty-five mile back-packing jaunt with sixteen JOE KLEISER a non-conversation with the driving force behind the lsrhs nimbus program kids in October. Joe came out of the faculty mailroom as I stumbled through the halls, took one look, broke into an enormous grin as if we Shared some fantastic joke on the surroundings, and asked me how we were supposed to last the day. A girl who had been with us walked across the hall, and the three of us spent the next thirty minutes re-assuring each other about our ability to cope. Any of us who have done a Nim- bus, or have been with Joe or Fran or Kayla know that hidden within the sometimes deceptively placid subur- ban high school we live in is a tree whose roots get into you when you approach it. Joe Kleiser is a man, only one man, who might be de- scribed as the heart of the tree. But he wouldn't like the description: be- cause the art of the tree, the joy of being a part of the tree lies in the fact that in order to begin, to blossom, to continue, requires more. A collection of smiles, sun-filled afternoons on mountains and lakes and rivers, on the ropes course or playing basket- ball in the gym: rainy mornings with coffee and a smoke and a few easing minutes of openness, of feeling like you're part of something more than a building or department or class or schedule. Perhaps the best way to live in an institution is to see it from outside as well as inside. Perhaps the beauty of Joe Kleiser lies in his ability to en- able us to do just that. After a few days of being human, being elevated to the level of simple physical and social needs, wi thout the impositions which come naturally with any insti- tution: after this experience, perhaps we can return and with the persua- sion of our common humanity we can make our own institution part of a forest.
