This experience in outdoor survival provides opportunities for personal growth as well as for developing greater appreciation for one’s responsibility to others. MR. ANTHONY J. Eldorado Edgar Allan Poe gaily bedight a gallant knight, in sunshine and in shadow, had journeyed long, singing a song, in search of Eldorado. but he grew old — this knight so bold and o’er his heart a shadow fell as he found no spot of ground that looked like Eldorado. and, as his strength failed him at length, he met a pilgrim shadow — “shadow,” said he, “where can it be — this land of Eldorado?” “over the mountains of the moon, down the valley of the shadow, ride, boldly ride,” the shade replied, — If you seek for Eldorado.” last summer Kent was associated with the “Weathervane Theatre” in Whitefield, New Hampshire, playing with Mr. Dean Aldrich in their “two-man orchestra,” and also appearing in stage roles. this photograph of Kent is from the last scene of “Camelot” in which he was performing at the time of his death. The quotation is from a review of this production. “Tom of Warwick, the young man at the end of the play who embodies all the freshness and hope of the future, is extremely well portrayed by Kent Forbes.” photograph by courtesy of Lawrence Presby, Littleton, N.H. review by Carole Gross —=— i =e? i? L.S.R., with its freedoms and changing curriculum is preparing individuals for the future. | materials center Instructiona 148 growing and adapting to the needs of our ever-expanding student body in their varied academic and intellectual pursuits is the “instructional materials center.” the addition of several new librarians, the new check-out service, the “enforced hush,” the “student book monitors,” the extra study carrels, lounging chairs, the wide paperback book selection, and the creative student art gallery have not only increased the capacity and efficiency of the library, but have added new dimensions and opportunities for student use of the library’s facilities. beside being the center for intensive research and individual recreational pursuits, the library is used for many activities as well. its peaceful atmosphere is interrupted after-hours by many a rousing faculty, school committee, student exchange, or homecoming meeting. audio-visual services A et is rs Va under the direction of Mr. Richard Santella the audio-visual department has taken a definite step forward this year. it offers both teachers and students a wealth of materials and services unheard of in the traditional library. av serves as one of the school’s primary resource, research, consultation, and advisory centers, for today’s teachers and students rely on the au- dio-visual communication afforded them in films, transparen- cies, tapes, and slides. TT it english the field of english electives has ex- panded this year with the addition of semester courses in Shakespeare, phi- losophy, and public speaking to the already established drama, film, imagi- native and expository writing, words and their ways, and yearbook produc- tion. many upperclassmen have chosen to substitute the newly-offered two elec- tives for the conventional full year en- glish course. junior and senior independent study plans have varied widely for those admitted to the program, including individual research, team research, and classroom teaching, all in close rela- tionship with a faculty adviser. the foreign language department, headed by Miss Cécile Brault, added two new teachers, Mr. David Javitch, french; and Mr. John Lucas, Spanish; to its roster this year to serve its expanding student enrollment in four languages — french, german, latin, and spanish. fourth and fifth year students taught lower level classes, or conducted those of their peer groups, in an experiment aimed at involving students in the teaching experience. le mathematics with the addition of several new teachers to its staff, the mathematics department has made innovations in approach. the chief change is in the three combined ju- nior-senior trigonometry classes which meet at the same time block and integrate pro- grams. in addition to the elective courses in computer mathematics and number theory, several students have opted for independent study, for the first time, in math. 154 nna t eee i i : history and government this year the history and government department added a course in ancient history to its many offerings. in an innovation in procedure upperclass- men may now take courses in “things russian”, non-western world, modern european, american history, and american issues in any year. the manda- tory freshman course, a teamed approach to the humanities, includes history, art, music, and litera- ture. the icon project for “things russian” was a spe- cial feature this year. 156 itheemiemiennteetianree working to make science relevant to our lives, the earth science, biology, physics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, health and human, unified science, and advanced science classes have been able to put meaning into scientific knowledge through self-discovery and practi- cal application in the laboratory and in indivi- dual projects. science is no longer a subject to be taught from textbooks. SGiGiiGS 157 Stine mesma Lee arena, unified science the unified science program coordinated by Mrs. Ouida Bailey and Mr. Frederic Scott is now in its second year of opera- tion. the three-year sequence, centraliz- ing on the unity of the universe as a theme, traverses the boundaries of biolo- gy, chemistry, earth science, and physics by using common conceptual themes in- tegrating the four into a meaningful, un- repetitious curriculum. during the fourth year unified science students will pursue advanced individualized programs in one of the four disciplines. Mrs. Bailey’s sophomores are conducting a titration experiment to study plant and water absorption. 2 eee oé-= physical education under the auspices of the physical edu- cation department several students have embarked on a liberal independent study program, in place of the regularly sched- uled classes. continuing in this indivi- dualzed trend, the department hopes to move to an all elective system for physi- cal education and to incorporate the outward bound program into the curricu- lum. ae —. RMN Sa OE Pw business although business students still study typing, bookkeeping, and stenography, they also have ex- perience with modern business machines, including computers. since many are already employed, instruction in the preparation of income tax returns is included and the course in business law is practical and popular. college bound students profit from elec- tive courses in notehand and per- sonal typing. OO fifty students are enrolled this year in the work-study program directed by Mr. Joseph Pacenka of the faculty, in cooperation with local employers. their academic classes are scheduled in the morning and in the afternoon they go to the stores, offices, restaurants, and automotive service stations where they are employed. some students plan immediate business careers; others are earning money for further study after high school. 169 in all the outward bound courses the group of participants worked together to achieve a common goal, although there were personal, as well as group accomplishments. most of the program now takes place on school property — the initiatives course, the wall, the fence, the beam, the ropes course, and the tires course. rapelling, prusicking, and cliff rescue were conducted off the gym wall. each group had a weekend excursion to Crow Hill for rockclimbing and rapelling. all the groups had solos during which the individual found a closeness to nature and realized himself. one of the groups went sailing on its final expedition, another went mountain climbing, and another kayaking and canoeing. drown proofing was taught to all the groups. this year teachers, as well as students participated and assisted in the course, ask yourself, ‘“can | do it?’’ and answer, “1 can.” ... “the best way is your own way” O.B. certainly clarifies a per- son’s character... “Il am now richer in valuable experiences, friendships, knowl- edge and potential.” . . . DeNormandie. they have been involved in “project listening’ and have attended administrative council meetings. the year has been one of communicating and not communicating; of concern and of apathy; of action and of lassitude; of listening, and of talking. above all, in an unprecedented way, representatives have been thinking.
