FRESHMAN CANDIDS 110 EMERGENCY DOOR 111 ACTIVITIES STUDENT Promoting international understanding has always been an endeavor of exchange programs. Lincoln-Sudbury has been participating since 1958, during which time we have sent 44 ambassadors abroad and have received 27 students from other countries. By means of work days, in- ternational dinners, and speeches, our school has gained an international atmo- sphere that not only envelops the school, but also the communi- ties of Lincoln and Sudbury. The things I remember from Germany are not only the magnificent Alps and the roman- tic castles, but the strong bonds of friendship made through the home stay and the travels, friendships with the young and the elderly, friendships through common or differing in- terests, and friendships through understanding. Anne Clippinger What a small world. . . 118 People greeting Liia, Liz, Marianne, and Christen. It is impossible in these few words to truly express how profitable this summer was for me. I have returned from Ger- many with a greater understanding of the German people and their Pree and with valuable insights into life in general. I an deeply indebted to all who made my trip possible. Karl Schmalz (President of the Student Exchange Club) “Cheers, James.” A summer with the Experiment is an experience that changes you in a number of small ways that aren’t as obvious, but are, nevertheless, there .. . and generally for the better. Costumes, under the chairmanship of Christine Schroeder, were tasteful and appropriate. Mrs. Rogers and Dr. Ford-Waterlow (George Angell) In the sensitive hands of director Harriet Rogers, the play never faltered, never fell into sentimentality, because she had established with her young actors a secure base of re- lationships . . . Mrs. Rogers gave life to what might be a static play by creating movement which appeared to be choreographed, so exact and balanced it was... Out of character Arabel (Betsy Wood) The needs of the play were well served by the single set designed by Richard Humphries, Susan Winter, and Judith John- son. Gordon Woodington, of stage crew; George Browning, production man- ager. 125 Alfred Moulton-Barrett (Kurt Voight), Henrietta (Kitty Preston), Octavius (Jim Bair) Robert Browning (Charles Hall) and Flush (Heidi) Wilson (Marsha Alibrandi) Aunt Hedley (Meredith Russell) 124 Elizabeth Wood, as another sister, Arabel, gained our sympathy, as we realized that her spirit had already been broken. Each of the seven Moulton-Barrett boys, though seen briefly, gave us a well-defined personality. Charles (Albert Ryans) Arabel, Octavius, George (Paul Yalen), Edgar (Michael England). Bella Hedley, the flighty but knowing young cousin, was sheer delight in the hands of Margaret Avery. Other excellent characterizations were contributed by Jay Schaffner, as Henry Bevan, Bella’s fiancé; James Bair, as the stammering Octavius Moulton-Barrett; Jeffrey Nims, as dashing Surtees Cook; Meredith Russell as Aunt Hedley, and George Angell, as Dr. Ford-Waterlow. Henry and Bella “Come, come my pet-t.” 125 David Langton showed considerable talent in the difficult role of Dr. Chambers. Dr. Chambers (David Langton), Elizabeth Barrett (Janet Roy) Charles Hall, in the role of the poet Robert Browning, gave us a graceful, yet force- ful, portrait of a man who has found a love equal to his own. Elizabeth, her father, and brothers Septimus (Joseph Page) and Charles (Albert Ryans) Janet Roy, as Elizabeth Barrett, held the play in her long graceful fingers . . . She was all earnest charm with her doctors, dutiful and respectful to- ward her father, considerate of her maid, amused by her frivolous cousin, and full of womanly strength and courage in her love for Browning. Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning (Janet Roy and Charles Hall) Katherine Preston, as Henrietta, the lively and defiant member of the Moulton-Barrett family, was outstanding. 8 Henriette and Octavius (James Bair) William Weiss, as Edward Moulton-Barrett, was ex- tremely effective every moment he was on the stage. In fact, so realistic was his portrait of this sadis tic mon- ster, that he dominated the atmosphere even when he was off stage. All new, approximately 60 members elected in English classes, representing the entire school. A new constitution providing for new election procedures, a new dress and be- havior code, a new student court, new student monitoring committees, and a new attitude of student responsibility reinforced by strong administration and faculty support have revitalized student government at Lincoln-Sudbury. The council aims to effectively communicate student opinion to the administration, to provide realistic training in citizenship, to serve and promote the welfare of the school, and to develop school pride, spirit, and morale. It has made a significant be- ginning. Committees by the dozen. A committee report is heard by the council. This particular report con- cerns the December Formal. HOMECOMING Dec. 20, 1966 This year small groups of alumni, juniors, se- niors, and guidance counselors met in class- rooms to ask and respond to general questions about college life. Paper pennants identify the colleges represented by the graduates. 142 Alumni Homecoming Day occurs during Christmas vacation. On this day L SR alumni, who are freshmen and sophomores in college, return to give juniors and seniors first hand in- formation about the colleges which they at- tend. Mrs. Laura Pollock vf the guidance de- partment originated this idea, already a school tradition. During the social hour teachers greet former students and individuals ask more specific questions about particular colleges. A supper for alumni, fac- ulty, and seniors, with Mrs. Betty Adrian as chairman, is another pleasant of Homecoming Day. 143 MATH CONTEST GROUP Math Contest Group Seated, James Bair, Stephen Robinson; Second Row, Steven Goldstone, Winnie Li, Wendy Robinson, Ann Novak, Robn Gras; Third row, Mr. William Galvin, advisor; James Fox, Chrieten Raestad, Peter Holmes, David Braun. Every month a group of students from Lincoln-Sudbury caee part in a mathema- tics contest attended by twelve other neighboring schools, each school taking its turn to sponsor the meet. Each team member takes three out of the six tests cov- ering various fields of mathematics. The categories each person will participate in have been assigned before the contest. Each ten-minute test has three questions scored one, two, and three points, the three-point question being the hardest. A perfect score on a test would therefore be six, and a perfect score for each individual would be 18. Ann Kovak, a senior member, was the team’s top scorer. L S R’s math contest group always puts on a good show for the school. This year the team, composed pri- marily of juniors, consistently placed third or fourth. Four students, Leslie Hathaway, Dennis Flaherty, Ann Novak, and Gordon Luk- esh, and two teachers, Mr. Terry Miskell and Mr. Frederic Scott, were chosen to represent our school. The program began at the end of the school year in June and continued into August. Courses were offered in the sciences and mathematics and varied from “Topics in Experimental Physics” to “Oxygen: Its Function in Vertebrates.” The program provided the students, juniors at the time, a good chance to see how they would react to college life. Later Miss Bundgus showed slides and gave a talk about a pilgrimage of students of which she was a part. Certainly the most appetizing of the French Club projects was the making of crépes under Miss Klein’s 154 guidance. The price of admission to the Home Ec. room was “your favorite confiture.” One meeting featured French music! French rock n’ roll, folk songs, and Edith Piaf recordings. Plans for the year included the presentation of a French play and a visit to a French restaurant. PARENTS, TEACHERS, STUDENTS During free periods, parents visit the library. (Miss Wheatley may be trying to enroll another “volunteer mother.”) On Lincoln-Sudbury’s annual “Back to School” night, par- ents find and follow their son’s or their daughter’s Monday class schedule. Teachers explain the nature of each course. Student guides help parents find their classes. STUDENT TUTORING SERVICE The idea of the Student Tutoring Service is to have a student who excels in a subject teach another who is hav- ing difficulty and who asks for student help. Tutors give this help during their study periods. Because of the building program this year, finding a quiet tutoring area was difficult, but after midyears an area was set aside “for tutoring only.” Eleanor Kline tutors “‘under the stairs.” 155 Karen Coppenrath and “Mike” O'Connor lead casual corps: Kane, Wilson, Chandonait, Weinstein, Clark, Winship, Saul, Meyer, Claffey, Townsend.
