Dr. Tourville leaves Regional after ten years of help- ing it grow toward being a school where the students have freedom on terms of responsibility. His calm and relaxed, yet firm manner has been very successful in guiding from its beginning to its present stature as a noteworthy high school. Dr. Tourville is now Principal of Newburgh Free Academy, Newburgh, N.Y. Our thanks and best wishes go with him and with his family. Susan A. Morrison Thanking Dr. Howard W. The seniors enjoyed it, too. CHILDREN’S DAY On a rainy Wednesday, June 1, the Lincoln-Sudbury seniors entertained 75 children who are in the care of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, Boston, in ob- servance of the eighth annual Children’s Day. The Class of 1959 initiated this project — a day in the country for underprivileged children. Faculty and Staff join the children at the cook-out lunch as guests of the seniors. Senior chef, Bruce Ey, turns the hamburgers as seniors serve the children and them- selves. Out to lunch. It’s a busy but enjoyable day for class advisers, Mr. Carl Perkins and Mrs. Martha Pappas. Edward Mikoski, Jr., announced the class gift to the school — marble benches for the courtyard — accepted with thanks by Dr. Tourville. Dr. Tourville then paid tribute to retiring Superintendent, C. Newton Heath, “whose accomplishment in charting and guiding the progress of the Sudbury schools and Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School have brought national recognition to both.” At the time no one realized that this would be Dr. Tourville’s last gradua- tion, also, or how appropriately his tribute to Mr. Heath described - his own service to Regional. Entering high school was a big event for me, as it probably was for many of you. I said to myself, “Now I am becoming someone and soon I will be able to make my own important decisions.’ Today, four years later, we are leaving Lincoln-Sudbury, no long- Message er strangers from two different towns, but good friends from one school. As I look back I realize how much we have matured in this short period of time. I believe we are ready to make the vital de- cisions which will affect our adult lives. As we have grown, this school has also grown. It has expanded, during ten short years in physical size and population, and even now the grounds are being invaded by cement mixers and bulldoz- ers in preparation for future growth. It has also matured academ- ically. I am proud to be a graduate of such a school, supported by thoughtful taxpayers of Lincoln and Sudbury, and I shall remember these years as among the best of my life. Vernon was admired and respected by both students and faculty for his quiet and un- assuming, yet efficient ways. In seven years as Guidance Director at Lincoln-Sudbury, Mr. Ver- non supported and helped to build our school’s fine curriculum and philosophy of education. He guided many students toward a promising future; their growth and success, as well as that of his school, were two of his greatest concerns. For Aug. 10. 1915 — Oct. 20. 1965 what he was, and for all that he gave to Regional, i : he shall long be remembered. Mr. Vernon with National Merit Finalists of the Class of 1964. Lucy Herman, who spent her summer living and traveling with a family in the Netherlands; David Gardner, who spent his summer exploring Italy with his Italian “brothers;” and David Pal- mer, who lived and traveled in Norway, were un- der the joint sponsorship of the Student Exchange Committee of the PTSA and the Experiment in International Living, in Putney, Vermont. Cynthia Nystrom, a 1965 graduate of Lincoln- Sudbury Regional, is also participating in the stu- dent exchange program as a student at the Chea- dle Hulme school in England. David Palmer, Lucy Herman, and David Gardner participated in the Experi- ment in International Living as community ambassadors from Lincoln and Sud- bury under PTSA sponsorship. Regional’s three for- eign students with their first semester hosts: Leslie Man- chanda from India with his American “sister,” Kitty Wood; Chip Ellms, with his Finnish “brother,” Jarmo Laakkonen, and Jorge Carreon, with his American “‘broth- er,’ Joe McCune. jj STUDENT EXCHANGE Jorge Carreon, from Quezon City, Philippine Islands, came to Regional from the Jose Abab Santos School. Jorge is the first student to participate in an exchange created between his school and Regional by Mr. and Mrs. William Warren, of Sudbury, who were stationed in the Philippines with the Peace Corps. Joe McCune, of Lincoln, and Bob Clark, of Sudbury, were his hosts for his year at Regional. Jor e attends one of the large group lectures in the lecture all. Jorge, an accomplished pianist, honors us at a school assembly. Mrs. McCune and her two sons, Joe and Jorge. Leslie Manchanda came to Lin- coln-Sudbury on a scholarship from Air India. He attends the Bishop School in Bombay, India. Kitty Wood, of Sudbury, and George and Gilbert Fullerton, of Lincoln, were his hosts for his year in the United States. Besides carrying a full aca- demic schedule, Leslie also partici- pated in the intramural soccer and winter track programs. mee Kitty Wood introduces Leslie to his Lincoln-Sudbury schoolmates at an assembly held on his birthday. Jarmo Laakkonen came to Regional through the In- ternational Placement Service from the PHTK School in Helsinki, Finland. His hosts for the year were Chip Ellms, of Sudbury, and Frank Garrison, of Lincoln. Jar- mo was rather overwhelmed at first by the “rush” of events, but, as the year went on, found himself com- pletely involved in academics, the soccer and_ track teams, and in learning how the people in Lincoln and Sudbury live. Our Finnish Exchange Student, Jarmo Laakkonen. program. Jarmo found Regional’s Senior-Freshman Welcome Dance a good place to learn the latest steps, with quite a few willing teachers. All the foreign students studying at Lincoln-Sudbury were introduced in a Student Exchange Assembly at which Heidi Grey presided. Regional’s “ambassa- dors” explained the Experiment program. STANDING; Carlton Ellms, Pamela Thayer, Katherine Bogle, David Palmer, Heidi Grey, W. Joseph McCune, David Gardner, Lucy Herman. The student workers found various jobs awaiting them when they reached their as- signed places of employment. Workers at the Emmons’ spent the day making apple cider. A group of students also painted Mr. Bowdoin's house as a workday project. Meanwhile, preparations for the International Dinner went on. The crates of chickens were delivered to the cafeteria. Students helped with this and with the serving of the din- ner. Students contributed their time and the money paid to them to the student ex- change project. WORKDAY 122 The Student Exchange Work- day and International Dinner were held on October 12, 1965. Student participation in the workday resulted in the earning of a record amount of money which will be used to further the student exchange program at Re- gional. The International Dinner was attended by 600 people who later filled the gym to hear the student ambassadors report on their summer abroad, and _ to meet the incoming foreign ex- change students. The International Dinner annually benefits the student exchange program. The problems, which seemed to be easy during the first part of the year, increased in difficulty. They were discussed on the bus as well as during refreshment time. Activities have included a bake sale, a trip to the Mu- seum of Fine Arts to see French Impressionistic Art, a trip to a French restaurant, and a French movie. The emphasis in both groups has been upon fluency in French and learning French customs. Last Christmas more than one hundred alumni came from the audience to sing at Mr. Wentworth’s invitation. The choral program, under the direction of Mr. Rob- ert G. Wentworth, has grown to include the Christmas Concert and the presentation of an orchestrated work by the Mixed Chorus. The Select and Special choruses also give a Fall Concert, make a Spring Tour, pre- senting daytime and evening concerts for other schools, and give a Pops Concert for the benefit of the Student exchange. This year a musical, “Plain and Fancy,” was produced in April, in conjunction with the Drama De- partment. Chorus is now a five-credit course for Select Chorus members. President of the chorus is Marley Meyer, with Mark Joyce as Vice-President. Section leaders are Heidi Grey, Carolyn Filbin, Charles Hagopian, and Jo- seph McCune. Amen. Steve LeBruto practices on the sousaphone. BAND Our music department has expanded this year to include a thirty-five piece Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. William Edmonds. The band meets five times a week and is a major credit course in which its members learn elements of composition and theory, in addition to receiving instrumental instruction. The Flute Quartet, Brass Sextet, Clarinet Choir, and Dixieland Band are sub groups which meet one afternoon a week. The band plays for school assemblies and plans to present concerts. Band officers for the year are: Warren Harpster, president; Wayne Maiuri, vice- president, and Rosemary Debye, secretary- Treasurer. Deborah Thurlow is librarian, and Room 20 is now the band room. “Music Mouse’’ The Concert Band 144 Oe eek Bee ¥ Ae.) Cheerleading began early this year for the Lincoln-Sudbury cheerleaders. The girls, with Mrs. Patricia Punchard as advisor, bought their own outfits — dark blue sweaters and tartans — and led the cheering at the soccer games. They also organized a courtyard Pep Rally before the Medford game — a game which determined whether or not the varsity would be eligible for tournament competition. Band selections, cheers, speeches, and class skits had the desired effect, as the Warriors did Beat Med- ford. Mr. William Edmonds starts the music at the rally. 146 Athletic Director, Lewis Baldwin introduces “Pat’’ Martin 66, captain of the cheerleaders.
