LINCOLN GREEN he had of leanrng forward rn hrs eagerness he seemed less tall He had a peaches and cream complexron and long dark brown harr Physrcally Shelley was really a beautrful man Nor was hrs rntellectual berng any less beautrful He had a strong wrll and great argumentatrve powers whrch enabled hrm to convert people to hrs way of thrnkrng yet there was a certarn softness a delrcacy a gentleness about hrm whrch were also strong characterrstrcs throughout hrs lrfe Shelley was strll expressrng hrs varrous oprnrons the next mornrng when he heard a clock strrke Rushrng from the astounded Hoggs room he called back My mrneralogy class' ' From that nrght on Shelley and Hogg bec rme rnseparable frrends Every mornrng the two went for long walks durrng whrch Shelley acted lrke a lrttle boy clrmbrng every knoll and jump rng every drtch If they came to any water he would launch lrttle paper boats and follow them as they drrfted wrth the current Hogg remarn rng at the startrng pornt of the e voyages was somewhat complrant but always exasperated When they returned from therr walk Shelley would be exhausted from so much exercrsrng and would lre rn the mrddle of the rug rn front of hrs frreplace curled up lrke a cat He mrght sleep rn thrs way for four hours at a trme What an extraordrnary creature' thought Hogg after he left hrm one nrght The grace of a young grrl the purrty of a marden who has never left her mothers srde and nevertheless an rndomrtable force the soul of a Benedrctrne monk wrth the rdeas of r acobrne 'l' One day about a month after the Chrrstmas holrdays Shelley burst rnto the shop of the Ox ford booksellers whom Mr Shelley had told about Percy s prrntrng fr aks wrth a far parcel of pamphlets under hrs arm Hastrly he ex pl rrned th rt each prmphlet was to be sold for srxpence and that they were to be put rn con prcuous places To make sure the latter was done correctly he began rushrng around the shop placrng the pamphlet on tables and shelves and rn the wrndows The booksellers watched hrm wrth an amused fatherly look the same look that all wealthy young freshmen were apt to get Had they examrned the pamphlets at closer range perhaps they wouldnt have drsplayed such bcne volence toward Shelley The name of the prm phlet was The Necessrtv o Atlrcrsm Approxrmately twenty mrnutes later the Rev Mr John Walker passed the shop and glanced rn the vxrndow It wouldn t take much to rmagrne the shock he recerved He stormed rnto the book store and demanded the meanrnv of thrs outrage Maurors A rel p 'O Angrrly he added that they had better take all the copres of thrs drsgraceful pamphlet from the shop and throw them rnto the fire To safeguard therr own rnterests the book sellers wrsely drd as they were told and at the same trme summoned Mr Shelley to them To accuse anyone lrke Shelley of overstepprng hrs bounds rn regard to freedom of wrrtrng or speakrng rs defrnrtely a mrstake as the prrnters soon found out At once Shelley rnformed them rn hrs prercrng vorce that he had certarn rrghts as an Englrshman to communrcate hrs thoughts to the world rn any way he pleased addrng trr umphantly that all the brshops on the Bench and many Deans and Chanccllors of varrous Unr versrtres had already recerved copres of The Necessrty o Athersm A few days later a porter came up to Hogg s rooms wrth the Dean s complrments to Mr Shelley and would he go down to hrm rmmedr ately 4' Shelley drd as he was brd and berng a rather hot tempered lad drd not get along too well wrth the Dean Because the Dean asked rudely that Shelley admrt that he wrote the rad rcal pamphlet Shelley refused to say anythrng He felt he was a free man rn a free country and th rt he drdnt have to reply to such rnterroga trons At once the Dean expelled hrm askrng hrm to leave the college hy the next mornrng Shelley felt hot and cold as he dashed back to Hoggs rooms Hrs beautrful world where he would have been happy to stay forever was crash rng down all around hrm Once rn the company of hrs best frrend tremblrng and vxhrte he threw hrmself down on the sofa and repeated the word Expelled Hogg also upset and angry at thrs terrrble punrshment whrch had been rnflrcted on hrs frrend rmmedrately sent a note to the Dean re questrng an audrence He got the audrence but he got expelled too as he also had refused to answer the accursed questron Drd you wrrte thrs pamphlet? LINCOI N GREEN On Catchmg Trams OUND THE WORLD travelers tourlsts and commuters often say there are two ways of catchmg trams The first way IS to arrlve at the statlon anywhere from a quarter of an hour to an hour early and bear the agomes or long goodby es The seeond and the mueh less palnful IS to arrxve at the statmon wlth two mm utes In whleh to buy the tleket find out what traek the tram leaves on and fmost xmportant of allj get on the tram Hardly anyone hlts a happy medium' The latter method does away wlth tearful farewells and mstruetxons but the former usually enables one to seeure a seat whleh lb very xmportant these days Before the war there were numerous aeeommodatlons on the trams and lt was not very dnfheult to seeure one but beeause of present day condltlons xt IS very hard and one may be eonsndered lueky lf he IS able to find stand1ng room There was another faetor wh1eh used to make eatehmg trams easler the eonduetors would S01'll6t1IT'lBb hold the trams a few seeonds for a person dashmg madly up the stalrs to the platform wxth eoat Ilylllg out III ba k hat falllng over one eye Lake fashlonj and poeketbooks kmttxng bags magazmes and what have you But the eonductors have ehanged xlong wxth the t1mes rf they saw anyone along with ha1r fVeron1ea hands elutehlng suxteases gruf and snarlmg and thenr trams pull out on time no matter what' Two of the best examples xllustratxng these methods of eatehlng trams have oeeurred III my own famlly about a month ago my parents went out West for a vaeatxon I sald goodbye to my father rn the eold bleak gray dawn of an early january mornlng as he hal to attend a busmess meetlng 1n Bo ton before meetmg mother at the tram for Chleago and as I was very sleepy part mg from h1m wasnt very pamful When I ac eompamed my mother to the statlon however we arrned about hfteen mmutes before tram txme moreover the tram was twenty mmutes late Thus for thlrty five mmutes we mter ehanged messages 1nstruet1ons warnmgs ad dresses just as we had been dolng for several diys but eonxersatlon seemed a neeessxty Flrst I would stand on one foot then ehange abruptly to the other undoubtly resemblmg a kangaroo hopping about then after I few m1nutes of sueh strenuous CXCILISC I would dash over to the lnfor matlon booth to ask what txme Mothers tram was due 1n even though I knew wlthout asking Fmally rn desperatxon for somethlng to do we w tlked up to the tram platform where my kan garoo hke antles were of some use to me ln the ITICIHQ wmd At long last the tram rushed rn and I helped mother fght her way through the erowd as everyone else was dolng by elbowmg pushlng were m methods yes a steppmg on other peoples feet lf they our way and usxng other unorthodox unt1l I had her safely on lt wlth a seat seat' and had her SUIICHSCS stowed on the raeks above her head After saylng goodbye and wlshmg her bon voyage for the last tlme I dashed through the ear ind leaped off for I was posltlve the tram would be leaving any mmute Unfortunately the tram just stood there After fifteen mmutes of trylng to talk through the wln dow rn vam wlth mother I wwed to her onee more threw her one more kxss and ran out of the SCHIIOH wxth a brave smlle on my face but wlth tears ln my eyes As I have pomted out mothers departure was very sad and palnful for both of us therefore I recommend the followlng method whleh my brother always follows for lt IS lxke gomg to a pamless dentlst to have a tooth pulled no tears no attempted conversatxon stead just a hasty loss a qulek Goodbye be good' and the tram has left and all rs over before you know It When my brother Tom eomes home from col arnves what tram he w1ll take baek or 1n his Case what tram he wxll cateh However no mat ter how much planmng we do he always eatehes the slx ten tram merely by the skm of h1s teeth About quarter of six the whole famlly plus anyone who happens to be there, pxle mto the famlly automoblle and start hopxng that we get Tom to the tram on time As we drlve down Allen s Avenue at a snall s paee for so It seems at twenty five mlles per hourj a new prayer comes to our llps that there won t be a frelght tram erosslng from the eoal yard to the gas tanks but there always IS As everyone slts nervously chewmg h1s fingernalls to a mere nothmg mother IS glvmg blg brother mstruetlons helpful hxnts and advlee on every subjeet ever lmagmed Flnally the tram moves out of the way and ome brave soul peeks fearfully at hrs wateh and suddenly yells Hurry up lt s four mmutes past sux' Tom groans I guess rt wlll be the Milk Tram for me Darn lt all' Dad gruffly reassures us that Tom has plenty of txme to eateh the tram lf has wateh IS correet as If always la and not to worry After what - 29 Q f , , Y 4 12 ' Y I , 1 Y - 1 4 v v ' ' ' ' . . 1.
