A child doesn't begin immediately to build giant skyscrapers. As time and practice are needed to build tall buildings with blocks, so time and practice are essential in building- character and personality. Knowledge blocks are arranged in ascending order through the four years of high school. Prep- aration for future occupations and positions re- quire knowledge and wisdom gained in those years. Athletic blocks are made of health, sports- manship, fair play, competitive desire, and companionship. Blocks of success and failure build an individual, as does the training he receives. Activity blocks provide leadership, disci- pleship and business wisdom. Organizing meet- ings, Robert's Rules of Order, and office cam- paigning are blocks which add to character building. These various blocks are buffed and polished to make the rough-edged Freshman a smooth- edged, well-rounded individual by the time he graduates. As the Freshman learns endurance and precision he makes the Freshman team. In actual play his technique improves. The junior Varsity team offers the player a greater challenge: real com- petition, both against the other team and within his team for starting line-up. The ultimate in the player's strife is reached when he has proved his power and drive and fitted together all his little blocks of game knowledgeg he makes the Varsity team. i I ATHLETICS 16 5 1 Qs G 'Ss . wk if ,..1 s ' ,ff fi gk 1 'ff' f l N J L,', T -5 .JW X' .. , . i . , Y Q1 ' if . A hard hitting and alert offense found paydirt several times in the first half, while a steady defence closed the door on Ford- son in the fourth quarter. After a high scoring win over Highland Park the team met one of their toughest foes of the season, Dearborn. The Dearborn griders fought hard and before the end of the game, Lincoln Plfk knew !hCY. had met a real opponent. This was a preview of things to come. The beefy boys from Wayne WUC determined. but just couldn't touch the speed of Lincoln Park. The next week saw the home town eleven retain the Little Brown jug against Melvindale. A hard fight, but one sided victory over Ypsilanti WHS HC!! in line. At this point, over confidence entered the picture, and it took the whole first half of the Allen Park game before the team came to life and slid by the boys in green. One more victory would mean a championship. Edsel Ford was next in line, and Lincoln Park was not to be denied. It was an action packed game that could have gone either way. In the last minute of play the determination, desire and drive of the L.P. players payed off with the deciding touchdown. The Huron Rouge Championship had been claimed, but the season was not over yet. Wyandotte put an abrupt ending to Lincoln Pa.rk's dreams of an undefeated season by downing them in the rain and mud at Wyandotte. Through great determination and almost flawless coaching, the Parkers emerged with an eight win, one loss record and a championship which teams in the future will be trying to duplicate for quite a while. 21 Homecoming Queen - Miss Sharron Deremer The radiant queen, Miss Sharron Deremer, receives the traditional crown presented by Miss Sue Tabor, the 1959-60 queen. With this moment of happiness in her life, she is fulfilling one of the fondest dreams of a high school girl. Basketball The Railsplitters started out the season with two straight losses. Wyandotte and then Taylor Center. These two defeats must have been what the team needed because they went on to beat Wayne, Ecorse, Bellville, and then lose to River Rouge in the finals of the Rouge Christmas Tournament. After the tournament the team came back to our own cracker-box and bested Edsel Ford and Dearborn the same week and defeated Ypsilanti before losing to Melvindale. The start of the second round was real good with a fine victory over Wayne with Gary Spicer's exit from the team through graduation. They then went on to beat Edsel Ford in a thriller and came back the next week to beat Dearborn in a cliff hanger, 47 - 46. Ypsilanti came next with the win that put them in a showdown battle for the conference title in our own gym with Melvindale. The outcome, you guessed it, a thrilling second half comeback by the Railsplitters gave them the conference champi- onship by the score of 47 - 46. This was a fitting climax to a good season and also nice due to the fact that this was the last high school game played in the old cracker-box and the first league championship that the old gym has seen. With six returning lettermen to initiate the calling of boys out for this season, a record number of potential players turned out. Although some of the boys were dropped, the future of Tennis at LPHS seems to be well fortified. The Freshman has a com- plete set of building blocks and in the semes- ters following begins to learn to assemble them. The Freshman tries, but cannot seem to fit his blocks together to build something. The Sopho- more has learned that his blocks are all square and can be placed evenly together in a row, but cannot seem to build. The Junior learns the se- cret of his blocksg balance. He learns that school, activities, and athletics all carry equal weight and must be properly assembled to bring his pile of blocks to a peak. UNDERCLASSMEN 65 .fi Jn ,TY .- I 'D KERSUL 9B Row 1: M. Truels Geistland - Exchange Student Putting on his tennis shoes Truels gets ready for a practice session with the team. Showing a sweater with the name of his hometown across the back to Sharron Deremer. Norway Hometown - Herova lleroya is a small city in Norway, actually not a city at all, but more like a village. It is located slightly more than 110 miles south of the capital Oslo, on the west side of Oslo fjord. Only 4,000 people are living there, and most of them are working in a big factory, in fact the biggest of that kind in the world. The main product is artificial fertilizer made of the nitrogen in the air, but they also make other electro-chemical products. This makes Heroya the third largest export city in Norway. The city provides very good recreational facilities for its people. They have a great socker field, with places for all types of field sports. Handball is also played quite a bit. You can go swimming in the fjords nearbyg and in the winter you can go skating on one of the two big rinks, or on the frozen fjords. just a couple of miles away you have beautiful places for skiing. Right now the three upper grades of high school must go to school in a nearby city, but soon they hope to have a school of their own. From this city in Norway comes Lincoln Park High School's first exchange student. Next year another will travel from some far off place to join us in the first year in the new Lincoln Park High School. Truels gives the photographer a good smile for his LPHS friends. 89 Fm' -M Lai 2535939 GUESS WHO?? Spinster Hop Fall was in the air with the many autumn leaves that filled the dance floor. PRESIDENT Bill Meadows PRESIDENT Sally lord an Tyler Cathay SPONSOR - Mrs. Rich SECRETARY Sharon Bayone s The Senior with his blocks of knowledge, wisdom, friendships, and honor assembled before him reminisces over his years of build- ing. He notices his blocks are weather-worn and remembers the joys and heartbreaks he endured to attain them. The Senior is a fine craftsman and has learned to take his blocks and build with them. He has built respect for and admiration of the underclassmen and faculty. At graduation, new blocks are given to the Senior. These blocks are not all six-sided, some have only four sides, some have no sides, only a curved surface. With these strange new blocks and with the old, the Senior will build his future. irw..
