MIUTMLL AFTER THE SEASON WAS OVER The begmmng of the not too unsuccessful 1949 pseudo plgskln battles of the Rallsplztter Squad saw pre season doubters lookmg cautlously for ward to our season s opener wlth Wayne as a subsequent defense of the 1948 Conference Tltle Veterans remembered the easy 46 6 romp the prevxous year but were forced to eat crow ln the flrst encounter w1th the Zebras when the faltermg Ra11sp11tters lost a fourth penod lead a.nd fell to the home team 13 7 A brxghter spot 1n the Ratlsplltters football hor1zon for the future was prov1ded the next two weeks when they scraped out a 7 0 wm over a good St Joseph eleven from Detro1t The locals margm of vxctory could have been greater but for Captaln Dlck Tarbutton s freak fumble on the St Joe s goal l1ne The Rallsplxtters star passer was about to cross the enemles goal lme for the locals second counter when the ball popped out of Dlck s arm mto the arms of an enemy backfleld man However wlthout the touchdown that should have been the Orange and the Blue seemed on thelr way to better th1ngs and better performances The vlctory strmg contlnued through the next two weeks wxth wms over Dearborn 27 0 and Ecorse 19 14 The Dearborn eleven offered l1ttle ln the way of offense and defense as the Raxlsplltters runnlng attack ran ln h1gh gear led by Jlmmy Johnston dlmlnutxve halfback and Cap tam Tarbutton The Ra1lspl1tter v1ctory strmg was short lfved as they moved mto the rugged portlon of thexr schedule On successxve weekends the grxdders met four of the state s ranklng grld machlnes Rxver Rouge was the f1rst to admlmster thexr blow mn a 25 0 w1n that saw the Parkers fall short several txmes of crosslng pay dlrt It was too much speed and welght for the Llncoln Park eleven but the sallent feature of such a trxmmlng was the performance of Jlmmy Johnston Plnt sxzed halfback who Just wouldnt g1ve up that partlcular nlght, no matter what' The avalanche of opponents touchdowns contmued the next three weeks when Melvmdale came from behmd to w1n 19 7 and Wyandotte romped easlly to a 41 6 score However there was st1ll llfe 1n the Rallsplxtters when they yourneyed to Mt Clemens a.nd hung a 13 7 defeat on the Eastern M1Ch1g2iH League Champlon Outstandmg hnemen were Pete Frabutt who played throughout the season wxth h1s left hand xn a cast as a result of a pre season 1nJury Larry Colwell a fxne prep tackle who also left l1ttle to be deslred m hls playmg 15 among those who w1l1 be m1ssed ln 1950 So ended a faxr to mlddlm season for the Rallsphtters A season studded w1th ups and downs replete w1th 1nJur1es and dlsappolntments l , . . ,. ,, . . . 1 . , . , , . , , , . . . , , . . . , . . , . , . . IN KFTIHII X-x ...bf v --I-'B 1- ',! nllll' X P I During the 1949 50 basketball season the team was composed of Bob Carpenter .Terry Davls DICK Tarbutton Ron Craven Bob Cooper Everett Blelby, Tom McElroy Ed Vallentlny B111 Oaks Hamas Goulasarlan John Berryman Lou Graff and John Vxg Bob Cooper and Bob Carpenter were elected co captalns for the season Cooper took over the captamshxp when Carpenter graduated ln January The team was not tall but what they d1dnt have 1n helght they made up In scrap What they dldnt have m ab1l1ty they had ln determ1nat1on to wm Hlghhghts of the season The one hand shootlng of Tarbutton and Craven the team play of Blelby McElroy and the guardmg by Cooper Many games were lost by the Rallsplxtters by one or two pomts xn the flnal seconds of the game The last game they played was rated by many as thelr best It was agaxnst the league champlon Dearborn 1n the State Regmal Tourney One of the top ten In the state they expected httle trouble from Lmcoln Park The lead changed hands frequently and the Parkers led at the end of the thlrd quarter In the fmal seconds smze proved lts advantage as the Parkers fell 42 38 L P had g1V9D Dearborn a real battle and had shown to many the old saymg xs true IT S NOT THE SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT' IT S THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG I X v l J .
