VARSITY BASKETBALL Of all the high school sports, basketball probably en- joys the greatest amount of popularity as attendance figures will readily substantiate. For the numerous Lancer die-hards, the ,59-60 season was one of hope, promise, reward and even tears for some. Beginning cage proceedings was an innovation. the Peekskill Invitational Tournament. Here the Lancers dropped a close one to Pleasantville, the eventual county Open', champions. They then routed Middle- town for third place. Optimism was great, though, as league play began. Two of last yearis starters, Ken Sarubbi and Preston Denby, returned along with subs Bill Barrisford, YN'ar- ren Lucker, Richie Perazzo and Dean Petros. Up from J.V. were Jerry Torch and Jim Brady. Other teams had been hit hard by graduation losses. But there were two plagues on Lincolnls houses, small courts and mid-season illness did much to prevent a championship year. After a toughloss to Tuckahoe. the Lancers compiled a four game winning streak. Sarubbi and Brady led the scoring and Denby the rebounding. as Roosevelt and Yonkers were beaten by large margins. Illness then took its toll, beginning with a losing effort at Gorton. It continued through a four game winning streak when the Lancers topped Bronxville. Saunders, Tuckahoe, and Commerce easily. The illness and the easy schedule prevented the building of momentum for the impending league games. Lincoln was eliminated from championship contention when Rye Neck. Yon- kers, Roosevelt and Gorton won close contests despite valiant scoring efforts by Denby, Sarubbi and Barris- ford. Any disappointments suffered during the regular sea- son were obliterated by the Lancers performance in the Section I Class AA Tournament. Coach Milt Barnhard's forces gained considerable prestige throughout the county when they squeezed by power- ful A.B. Davis. 51-49 fin overtirnel, and New Rochelle, 57-52. Davis fell when Brady blocked All- County ace Richie Shapiro's shot to Torch who passed to Barrisford for the key score. The Lancers used an effective freeze in both contests. The Lancers were made AA Runners-up when Roosevelt put on a sec- ond half 51 point scoring splurge to win 72-61. Lincoln took 7 of their 9 games at LHS, but only 4 of 9 on foreign hardwoods. They compiled 6-4 rec- ords in both CAN. and City Leagues. The over-all rec- ord was I3-8. IVe placed co-captains Sarubbi and Denley on the All-C. YV. L. team. Sarubbi also made the All City First Team while Denby and Brady made second team. Torch and Barrisford received honorable mention. That first trio received All-County honorable mentions, too. The members of the team are: FRONT ROW: YYil- liam Quick. IN'arren Lucker. Richie Perazzo. Harvey Berkey, Ken Sarubbi. Jerry Torch, Les Levy. Bob Lico. Jay Good: SECOND ROIV: Coach Barnhard. Tom Kasten. Dave Mayerson, Dean Petros. Clem Burnham. Preston Denby. Jim Brady. Wellington Sawyer. Bill Barrisford, Al Scheer. 149
