I Lincoln High School Cleveland, Ohio Volume 127 This book is about our senior year. Here are the places, events, and people that we will never forget. These pictures are only a small part of the memories we will carry for a lifetime. No amount of words or pictures can describe the many joys, sorrows, frustrations and elations that we as seniors have lived through in this our final year. Yet, we do not want to forget them and as we turn the pages of this book we can relive those special moments. So here they are the best of what we will remember—our—ONE LAST LOOK. 3 Mi 5 Many Faces of a Principal Your high school days are behind you. The little things ahead roust not be ignored for they are the starting points of higher and critical things in life. Accept the challenge of little things, first, and then go on to the fulfillment of your ambitions. Helen Keller had this to say about little things: The million little things that drop into our hands, rhe small opportunities each day brings, He leaves •.s free to use or abuse and goes unchanging along Hu silent way.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow felt that most persons would succeed in small things if they were not troubled with great ambitions. The entire student body was responsible for the nA all out effort, but it wouldn't have been com-N 'plctc without the Cheerleaders and the First ) j Ladies. The Cheerleaders were senior, Denise v j V, Milanich; juniors, Sorry Aldoy, Kathy Saucliak, Debbie Turner; and sophomore, Judy Yackee under the guidance of Mrs. Irene Frimel. The , First Ladies, although new here at Lincoln, have become not only a very large group but a very popular group. Their attractive red, white, ’ V and black outfits can be seen at all Lincoln High School events. Their leader, Miss Rita Haas, in the spark plug behind the group. Lincoln High School is surely proud of them. Spirit Sparked by 18 Cheerleaders and First Ladies Band-Majorettes March to Victory 20 If the Lincoln High School band and majorettes looked like high steppers this season, the reason was clear, victory with a big V. The band under the super direction of Mr. Donald Santa-Emma with Majorettes, Denise Gardner, Rita Ledford, Kathy Kubit, Nancy Bindas, and Sue Qsick weathered all the elements to bring to our football games that special sparkle that every victorious team needs. Seniors in the band this year included Tania Samoylicz, Laila Kalns, Marie Cocke), Nettie Hoycr, Joyce Allen, Eva Darling, Ken George, and Debbie Watkins. When our band isn't on the football field you'll find they are practicing for a Spring Concert or hoping to play for Commencement or just getting better and better. End of an Era—Beginning of a New: Lincoln's Finest Hour 22 Yes sir, this was the year. The one we waited for so long. It was really the end of an era and the start of a new. We were winners. The spirit generated into every classroom and corner at LHS. Thanks to a team who were possessed with courage, skill, and a will to win. Will we ever forget Eldon Rutherford's outstanding blocking, Dave Molina's great guarding, Mike Pyrtko, an outstanding pass receiver. Mike Willis, the exciting end, Dan Hoffman--terrificcenterblocker, joe Riveria's touchdown on South, Vic Quinones saving the Holy Name game (not once but twice). John Luntcr's superior tackling, Ray Moran's fine punting, John flash Jarvis for speed, Larry Massey's fine tackling, Bob Dooley, who did a fine Job before he received an injury. Last, but not least, because he had a special place in our hearts, is Willie Avery. What can we say about wonderful Willie? For us, all we can do is remember and remember Lincoln's finest hour. 23 Students and Teachers Laugh-In Traditionally, the students and teachers at Lincoln High School join efforts to bring fun and laughter to the student body. The occasion is known as the United Appeal Drive. The drive begins each year with an assembly. This year's assembly was a Laugh-In . One of the highlights of the show was a unique soap commercial. Jimmy Avery went into the shower with Stage III and came out as Dave Molina? Anything can happen ranging from Beatniks Heryak and Santa--Emma in a wash-tub band to Jim Avery, Tim Kosierik, Mark Stoessncr and Dave McCroski impersonating acne pimples. Tania Samoyllcz helps Mark Stoessner with costume while Gran Flanders Fortey gives her advice to Announcer Kovats. Last, but not least Laugh-In presented their own Charlie Weaver who was portrayed by none other than Mr. Masck. This year we surpassed our goal in the amount of $1,924.66 or 113.2 . Are we proud? You bet we are? OA.CL (l oU 26 JV's Dazzle LHS on the Way to Varsity JV team and cheerleaders have had a great season this year. Mr. Herb-ster's boys have gone a long way to a dazzling record, as Mrs. Frimcl's cheerleaders sparked spirit and enthusiasm with the fans. The team members and cheerleaders all show great potential which will probably lead to a great Varsity season next year. 28 29 It's Academic— the Challenge of Knowledge Versus Time 30 ' Under die guidance of Mr. James Apana, Lincoln High School again took part in the It's Academic television program. Jeanine Tortelll, Patrick Tchou, and Joe Hawkins were our team of three who competed against Maple Heights, and St. Joseph's Academy. We learned that knowing the answers was not enough, a fast finger on the bu 2er was necessary too in the race against time. It was a good try team. Just wait until next year. 31 32 Magic Moment for a Queen A moment of magic replaces weeks of stispense as the Athletic queen lor 1968 is named— Lorn Norris, her majesty for this year. The contest for queen was one of the closest in Lincoln's history with five finalists instead of the traditional three. The queen's court, a lovely sight in any kingdom with Joetta Brown, Laila Kalns, Shelia Lundy and Diane Yaussy. 33 34 Our boys were off and running-off to victory that is. Highlight of the year was the shut-out meet against Benedictine and South with the first five top honors won by Lincoln. Top scorers this season were seniors A1 Kelley, Rad Petkovic, and jin Takayama. Other seniors who put out their best were Bernie Buckner and Major Spry. Juniors showing great promise for future seasons were Bill Johnson and Nick VVinnyk. The sophomores also contributed with Stan Knavel and Rick Davis. Mr. Bowles, coach, did a great job of keeping our Cross Country' team on their toes. to Victory 35 NHS and SSC Prove Themselves in School and Community Life 36 The Student Council sponsored community projects such as the Thanksgiving Baskets, which were distributed to needy families in the Lincoln area. A new aspect of the Student Council presented itself as the Homecoming Dance. The officers for the year were Diane Yaussey, President; Laila Kalns, Vice President; Shirley Shorter, Secretary; and Charles Cass, Treasurer. Dedicated to the ideas of scholarship, leadership, sen-ice, citizenship, and character, the members of the Honor Society displayed their many talents by organizing various school activities. This year’s projects included participation both in the United Appeal assembly and a Christmas play. Dave Molina, President and Shirley Shorter, Secretary' along with sponsor Mr. David Wagoner have promoted this year's activities. 37 ft O.W.E. and C.O.E. Students Prepare Selves for Working World— Orchestra—Part of Music Life at L.H.S. 38 Having a unique way of preparing students for later life, C.O.E. employs Lincolnittes at various clerical and secretarial jobs within the Cleveland area. After attending classes in the morning, O.W.E. students proceed to work and on-the-job training, which will benefit them in future employment. Mr. Pavia and Mr. Heryak are the respective sponsors of these highly regarded organizations at Lincoln. An important part of the music scene at LHS is the Senior Orchestra. Under the supervision and direction of Mr. Santa-Emma, the students are practicing for the Spring Concert and hope to receive a rating as high as last year's. 39 Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! . . . This is one of the many sounds heard from the Choir members at Lincoln. The Choir, under the direction of Mr. King Mathews, consists of boys and girls, who are dedicated to the school. These students share their talent with both the student body and the community. Practicing every morning and often throughout the day has its rewards. Through the sound of music, a new world has opened its doors to the choir members, who include seniors Ken George, Chris Braun, Ihor Kwit, Ulrich Gloege, Martha Ortiz, Shicla Lundy, Marie Gockcl, Diane Yausscy, Janice Hackney, Sally Reiss, Marlene Cameron, and Henry Spence. Music is a Many 40 Splendored Thing 41 42 The Scent of the Roses Once again the Senior Class and the Drama Club, under the direction of Mis. Merhaut, have conic through and have successfully presented the Senior Class Play. This year's production was entitled THE SCENT OF THE ROSES, a comedy in two acts, has brought many new faces to Lincoln's attention. Serious and dedicated on stage; fun-loving and mischevious off stage, the Drame Club gives 100% to whatever it endeavors. 43 Spring—The Season of Basketball —For Girls and Faculty Tlic Proxies invaded the courts this season with speed, determination, and skill. Coach Lou Sawchik chose the big five Willie Avery, Bill Johnson, Rich Davies, Jimmy Avery, Mark Piccik. The highlight of the season came when we squeaked out Marshall 71 to 70. Heartbreaker for the team was the one basket we needed and didn't reach in the West game. Good luck to our graduating seniors and good luck to our team . . . Cagers Tame Their Wild Opponents 46 47 49 Chess Team Moves Out of Check as F.T.A. Swings into Action 50 Checkmate! This is the most important move of a chess game. The fate of the game is in that final move. Members of the Chess Team who know this move well graduated last June. Pat Tchou, Mark Stoessncr, Major Spry, Rad Petkovic, and Tom Old-corn participated in tournament which tests the skills of its members. Among the services performed by the Future Teachers of America, sponsored by Mrs. Muir, was a Christmas visitation to St. Vincent Charity Hospital. A Christmas skit, BETHLEHEM, was presented as Santa Claus visiting patients and passing out gifts. A surprise visit was paid to the children's ward, where Santa Claus was the center of attention again. The high point of the year is the day the members of the F.T.A. student teach for the teachers of their choice and gain first hand experience in the handling of a class. 51 Illnesses of World and Body Cured Junior Council on World Affairs, known as J.C.W.A. has taken steps to learn about the world and Its problems. Mr. Huttler, sponsor, along with officers --Tania SamoyliC2, President; Frances Babinec, Vice President; Drema Short, Secretary; and Marie Cocke 1, Treasurer, join with officers of other schools to promote functions that members participate in. Mock U.N., the main event of the year, is held in April, while other conferences, debates, and meetings continue throughout the semester to add to an exciting year. Future Nurses of America also learn about the problems of the world, but in a different way. The girls learn the importance of good health. Mrs. Newton, school nurse and sponsor, does much to spark the girls interest so that many continue in the rewarding career of nursing. Helping at the meetings and other events this year were: Corrinc Bolanovsky, Luba Komaschka, and Alva Holt. Singing its way into the hearts of many is Lincoln's Glee Club. Composed of fun-loving young ladies who enjoy singing; they can be heard singing every morning under the direction of Mr. Matthews. 52 by JCWA—FNA and Songs of Glee Club 53 Opponents Face Skill and Courage 54 at Lincoln High 55 Art at Lincoln—Creative Lincoln's art department is divided into two groups the fine arts, painting, drawi and sculpturing with industrial aits, building, and crafts. Mr. Hunsicker, head of tb art department, along with Mr. Levy and Mr. Swyrydenko, assist students in art appreciation and help develop their talent;. and Industrial The industrial arts department, under the guidance of Mr. Neff, trains the boys of Lincoln in various skills and projects which will be beneficial in trades such as printing, blue print reading, building, and crafts. Track Season Starts with Victory Lincoln’s track team was inspired this year as it carried on the success of last season. Mr. Bowles, along with Mr. Trump, coached and encouraged the runners in good sportsmanship as well as accepting the honors of success. An early scrimmage meet at South proved that our boys had all the potential and skill needed as Lincoln won with a score of 49--33. The team continued to meet with other Senate schools and arc anticipating top ratings as well as a victory at the Arena track meet in March. 59 Log Staff Prints It The Lincoln Log is an award winning paper and from the editions we've seen this year it looks like Lincoln will have another winning newspaper. Reporting and printing it as it happens, the news of Lincoln High School is always exciting. On the alert for a rude awakening the Log Staff never fails in reporting the news effectively. This year's Log Staff consists of: Rich Milter, Yvonne Cooper, La-Dawn Wade, Helen Laskaris, I aura Olson, Sonia Shaffer, Pat Tchou, Marie Cockel, Shirley Shorter, Mary Lou Burgess, Bob Looney, Chuck Cass, Barb Piazza, Ed Williams, Dave Clemons, John Luntcr, and Vic Scarpelli with advisor, Mr. Merhaut. 60 19 sudddei-i} se Coach John Sforza said the best team we've had in a long time. We agree they look mighty good. Although light on the heavy side the wrestling team has made Lincoln High School proud of them. The wrestlers this year were Vic Quinones, Rick Milter, Bob Dooley, Gene Adams, Jerry Casey, Mike Murie, Tim Casey, Juan Pena, Dale Kappy, absent at time of picture Jay F tzwa e and Mike Skurka — 62 Wrestling Team Struggles Toward Victories 63 The Senior Leaders help in gym classes instead of going to study hall and prove that physical fitness is a lot of fun. Miss Palumbo, sponsor, along with Mrs. Frimel, another gym teacher, guide the leaders as they provide help with equipment, clerical work, and class participation. The officers of 1969 were Tania Samoylicz, president; Denise Milanich, vice president; Christine Kent, secretary; and Pat Selick, treasurer. Lincoln's student body is proud of its athletes, and the Lettermen’s Club is a way of showing these men our appreciation. The Letter men, under the supervision of Mr. Coreno, represent the top athletes who have given extra hours of time and energy to many sports. Thev sponsor many events, but the I.ettermen-Leader's dance in the spring is the focal point of their activities.
