BOYS’ BASKETBALL Senior wolves stomp Solves win in triple Prairie Grove tigers overtime 68-67 by Coach Mick Mainer The Lincoln senior Wolves ended their regular season last week by playing two confer- ence games. We played Grav- ette Tuesday night and were beaten and then we played Prairie Grove Friday night and won. The ‘B’ game at Gravette was led by Ted Holcomb with 12 points and Fred Tennant and Vance Snodgrass with eight each. The ‘A’ game at Gravette was led by Branon Thicsse as he got his career high of 32 points. Leonard Cox had 14, Tennant, 8, McGuire, 7, Brock. 5, and West, 2. Then Friday rolled around and we won the sweetest victory of the year. The setting was as follows: the last home game of the season, the last home game for the seniors, the last chance to beat Prairie Grove without waiting another year. The stands began to fill up. the band shows up and starts to play. We’re dressed and ready to play; we have our prayer, the junior high game is over and we hit the floor ready to warm up. During the warm-ups, you can see our confidence as we jive it up a little and get loose. Finally we get through the warm-ups and introductions and it is game time. We line up for the tip; Leonard Cox outjumps their taller center and we go down and Thiesse scores. They get the ball and score, Thicsse again scores, Prairie Grove scores, Thiesse again scores and we lead 6-4 and that's as close as they ever get again. At the end of one quarter we lead by the score of 27-13. all five starters have scored and we have made 12 field goals. The half-time score is 49-33, and again we have five players who have scored. Going into the locker room at half with a 16 point lead against a team like Prairie Grove was quite a thrill. Still we had a half to play and knew it. At half-time Coach Jones asked, “Have you got a magnet or something in that goal?” I told him no, that was the end we practiced on. He had a boy keeping statistics and said we shot at a rate of 68% from the field and that ain’t” bad. The second half started and found us a little cooled off and Prairie Grove a little hotter. Some of you are probably thinking that's typical for us because we have had some bad third quarters. I knew if they couldn’t catch us the third quarter then they couldn’t catch us. The third quarter ended 65-55 with our lead cut to ten. The fourth quarter started and finally was over with Lincoln on top 81-69. Branon Thiesse again led scorers with 29, West finally played some real good defense and upped his score to 20. McGuire led our offense and picked up nine. Leonard Cox led us on the boards and pressure de- fense and scored nine. Brock led the team in assists and scored four. Tennant came in off the bench and picked up eight; Spinks also came off the bench, stole the ball on defense, cleared the boards and scored two points with someone hanging onto his arms. Overall, we played the best game we’ve played all year and it couldn’t have been at a better time. Hopefully we are almost at our peak in perfor- mance. We will have all this week to get ready for the District Tournament at Grav- ette. We will have to win the tournament to go to state because Green Forest already has one berth because they won the season conference record. Coach Mick Mainer The Lincoln senior boys made an exciting game with the Eureka Springs team here Tuesday night, taking a one point 68-67 win in a triple overtime contest. We didn't play all that well; but we ll gladly take the win because at certain points we did all that could be done. The game was relatively close throughout with the score being tied at the end of the first quarter; we led by five at halftime; two at the end of three periods; and then it took another 17 minutes to win by one point. Several players stood out as they competed very well. Mike McGuire led all scorers with 17; Leonard Cox had 16; and Fred Tennant had 12 Mike kept us in the ballgame early and scored all his points in the first three quarters before fouling out Leonard played a good game scoring and rebounding well and leading the team in two of the overtimes before fouling out. Leonard made a tip-in to tie the score and place us in the second overtime. West and Thiesse scored 8 points each and also louled out. Brock and Spinks did very well on the beards but they fouled out. With those six fouling out, we played most of the third overtime with our sub- stitutes of Fred Tennant, Kick Camp, Teddy Holcomb, Mark Kobison and Steve Cox Each of these players came into a key pressure situation and performed well Fred scored 12 points, all in the fourth quarter and three overtime periods. Fred has been out with the flu and was still weak, so we saved him until the fourth quarter for that reason, which turned out to be good for us. Teddy came into the ballgame, played very well on defense and rebounding when we had to have one. Mark came into the game as a guard and did a fine job handling the ball against a pressure defense. Steve was substituted into the game when Brock fouled out. Eureka was at the free throw line for a one and one chance to score. I told Steve if he misses you must cut off the shooter and get the ball What did Steve do? Exactly as he was told as if we were ahead twenty. With nine seconds to play in the third overtime, Rick Camp was fouled At this time we were one point down, 66-67 I had no time outs left, so as I was yelling out instructions to the rest of the players. Camp very unexcitedly walks to the line to make the front end of a one and one and tie the game. Again, as if nothing was happening, he made the back side of the one and one which gave us a 68-67 margin which held out to be enough as our defense didn’t allow them to get off another shot. It was a great game for us to win; not only because it was a cortference game, but because I think this group of young men deserved it. Needless to say, winning the game made those 41 minutes a lot easier to live over. 71 JR. HIGH BOYS’ BASKETBALL lo Ki hi. lioitom Koh—Kirn ('.rudup, mgr., Robert ( .arl« r. The Wolves came back with four quick points, however, to lead 19-15 at the start of the fourth quarter. Gravette tried to overtake the Wolves, but Lincoln was not to be denied this night, and held on for the victory. All of our boys played a good, solid basketball game. Our defense was better than it has been on other occasions, and we kept our composure late in the game when Grav- ette was fighting back.” Rick Neal led Lincoln with 10 points, and David Tate added nine points to the winning effort. Gravette defeated Lincoln in the Jr. B game. 32-23. Paul Braly, Robbie Carter, and Orvil Meyer each scored six points for Lincoln. Lincoln Jr. Boys return to action Friday night at home against arch-rival Prairie Grove. The 7:00 Jr. game will precede the Sr. Boys contest. 7th Grade Basketball In 7th grade action last week, the Celtics won their first game with a 10-8 win over the Lakers. Daryn Holcroft scored eight points for the winners, while Charlie Delap had six points for the Lakers. The Bucks remained unde- feated with a 4-2 victory over the Knicks. Joel Snarr led the Bucks with all four points, and Royce Coleman scored the Knicks' two points. The standings now arc: Bucks 5-0, Lakers 2-3; Knicks 2-3; and Celtics 1-4.
