In addition to this function, the Students Advisory Committee assists in orienting new Lincoln students, participates in the Martin Luther King assembly, and promotes Multi-Ethnic week with a variety of activities. The students forming this group were chosen on the basis of teacher recommendations for their leadership and academic qualities. CJUjuu 22 ■■ Shock Proficiency Cards A statement of proficiency is a definite statement of accomplishments in Business and Distribution Education at Lincoln High School. It is a verification that the requirements for one or more of the proficiency Programs (Secretarial, Accounting, Clerical, and Distribution) have been met. It is excellent career preparation, wise planning for combining part-time job skills and college, and a good recommendation to prospective employers. 23 Work Training The work training program offers students a chance to experience the real business world. The students are paid by the program itself, not the employers. This program is funded by CETA alleviate youth unemployment, especially in minorities. Student Directed Student Directed was created several years ago with Lincoln's choice not chance program. Students may take classes rangning from Language Arts and Social Studies requirements to Dream Analysis and Speed Reading. Credits are earned either by being under individual contract and fulfilling its particular obligations or by meeting the requirements of a group class. — E.S.L. English as a Second Language is a language arts class designed for students whose home native language is not English. E.S.L. emphasizes conversation, composition, grammer and comprehension — all the phases of communication North American style. Magnet The magnet program is an enrichment program in the arts, music, dance, drama and arts. The program provides federal funds for field trips, equipment and supplies. One of the most valuable aspects of the program is its hiring of professional artists in these areas to teach in our school making students aware of career opportunities in the arts. 25 Media Center Dedicated business education students organize, operate, and supervise the media center in the main hall. Over 1,000,000 copies of instructional materials are produced monthly by these qualified key operators, after in-service training at Xerox. In the class, key operators learn business operation, dealing with all kinds of people and requests, organization, and efficiency to most usefully serve the instructional copying needs of Lincoln's staff. Work Experience The difference between the Work Experience program and Work Training program is that the students are paid by their employers. Jobs for the work experience program are often suggested or arranged for by Mr. Renshaw, the work experience coordinator. 26 ™ Special Education The Special Education Program here at Lincoln is the largest in Seattle. The teachers work with the students, identify their problem and and work from there. Because of the individual help, the students learn more than they would in a regular classroom situation. The career center is a place open to all students looking for information about different careers available in the working world. Several people in the career center are there to help students learn about various aspects of occupations in many different fields. C)i) a. They not only attend all of the games, but they also organize almost all of the school assemblies through out the year. 33 Seattle Prep 14 Rainier Beach 8 Franklin 24 Cleveland 2 Season Scores Lincoln 36 Lincoln 15 Lincoln 19 Lincoln 27 Lincoln 8 Lincoln 20 Lincoln 6 O'Dea 13 Monroe 28 Queen Anne 23 2 Leo White RB-DB 89 Ken Hutchinson T E Jr. 18 Alt ha Buford WR 81 Kim Wallace DE-WK Jr. 64 Collin Dalev Guard 39 Terry Griffin DB Jr. 28 Dean Seraile RB 77 Matt Jackson DE Sr Not Pictured 24 Scott Me Farlane 30 Michael Rollins 32 Cedric Smith 76 Jay Walsh 79 Pete Shekeryk 85 Ron Washington Mike Skeel 74 Mike Cummings Tackle Jr 60 Fred Knierim OH Center 83 Tay Proctor De 87 Todd Stallworth TE-WR Sr 26 Aaron Dean IV. Tri-F Day - the Fall Football Festival. Lincoln’s own kind of Homecoming, Tri-F is marked by dress-up days, Gartha Morgan football coach speaks with pride, mums, the football game (of course), and the grand finale — the dance. Tri-F is part of the way that Lincoln re-asserts its spirit and pride in being one of the oldest schools in the city, a school where the diverse student body comes together to be a real group — The return of alumni both from the preceding year and from many, many years ago emphasizes the fact that Lincoln students are enriched by their attendance at the school. The trainers' duties include taping (both to protect and prevent injuries), administering first aid, rehabilitating, and, in general, helping to determine the health of the athletes. Kim Shaw Debbie Heintz Connie Shulmier Delia Perla Lael Urquhart Mr. Vicente ADVISOR 43 VM mi fa SPORTS There's nothing like sitting in the stands at a football game with about 500 people screaming in your ear to make you realize that there are times in other sports when, if a person were to cheer, the yell would echo around crazily as though it were in an empty house. Which it very well could be, come to think of it. Try going to a volleyball game sometime. You'll probably see a couple of faculty members, two or three students who seem to know each player's name, and maybe a couple of people bouncing a basketball, waiting for the match to be over with so that something more important can begin. Compare this with, say, a football game. With an average attendance of about 500 this season, the team got more support that it has in many years. With the cheersquad present. Pep Squad out in full force and sweaters, and a whole bunch of excited fans combining the social event of the week with a little genteel sports-spectating, it's no wonder that crowds keep coming in droves to keep the fun going. Sports publicity probably perpetuates the disparity in crowd attendance. After all, with posters, bulletin announcements, and occasional pep rallies both in the hall and the gym, people know about the money” sports in a way that cannot-or is not-given to the minor sports. The conspicuous absence of posters with the ornateness, care, and attractiveness given to football is an aggravation-or at least a wound to the pride - of many a cross-country runner. There may never be huge crowds at swim meets. There may never be long lines at the ticket windows for soccer. Gymnastics and tennis might not ever pull in adoring throngs. But this need not determine the official school promotion of those teams. A few posters here and there and a few enthusiastic fans would be welcome salves to the hurt feelings of a golfer who wins a championship in the rain, to a softball player who comes home with dust in everything, or a swimmer who is tired of knowing that no-one is willing to recognize that living with the smell of chlorine isn't all that fun. Author's note: The following editorial was written before the School Board made its final decision concerning school closures. However, Totem annual staff felt that it would be appropriate to express some students' views on this subject. With the possibility of Lincoln closure in 1984, there arises a conflict between practicality and sentimentality. Or so it seems ... True, at first thought, Lincoln High School is old, in disrepair, and operating on what is termed inadequate site size. However, to get the total rationale behind keeping Lincoln open, one must examine the hidden qualities of this school. First, the Desegregation program. For approximately ten years now, the process of desegregation has been taking place successfully. To uproot this kind of proven program, to transfer the students involved in it to other schools, would mean the end of the special atmosphere of a naturally integrated school that has taken so much to achieve. Second, the Ballard plan. Dr. Moberly has mentioned three options for Ballard High School for 1995. 1) To close it. — This closure, along with that of Queen Anne and Lincoln, would leave a large part of the city with no secondary schools. 2) To remodel Ballard - Ballard, being almost as old as Lincoln, would require very nearly the same amounts needed to bring Lincoln up to standard. 3) To build a new Ballard on the proposed Denny regrade site— Not only would a new building cost more than repairing Lincoln, but with a downtown high school there is no way the School Board's fifteen acre site size requirement could be met, which is one of the rationale for closing Lincoln. Third, location. Lincoln High School is virtually in the center of the city, which makes it easily accessible to all main Metro bus routes. It s location is also advantageous when considering the rising cost of gasoline. By 1990, families will be moving back into the city from the suburbs, thus increasing school-age population. Fourth, according to Seattle's Office of Policy Planning, Department of Research and Evaluation, the projected population of the Wallingford area shows an increase of seven per cent for 1990. Fifth, the District Planning Commission, a citizens' group working in conjunction with the School Board, recommended that “Dr. Moberly's plan be modified to provide better service to the large area affected by the proposed closures of Lincoln, Queen Anne, and Ballard under low enrollment conditions (a “core high school facility in the Ballard area is recommended)'' and that every effort be made to provide for use of a secondary school (intermediate or senior) in each existing consortium (the Lincoln and West Seattle communities lose both their intermediate high schools under the Superintendent's proposal). Finally, the pure, unabashedly sentimental fact that Lincoln is Seattle's oldest public high school still in operation. Too often these days, the old and traditional is tossed aside to give way to all things new and progressive. With a fine reputation for restoring and cherishing old buildings, the city of Seattle must relinquish all claims of pride in its heritage should its citizens allow Lincoln High School to be closed. 126 Honor Society The people who are listed on this page are receiving recognition for the effort and hard work they have put forth in order to maintain the grade point needed to be on Honor Society. There are many different groups that people belong to or identify with. Groups at school and churches, friends, and so on. Everywhere we go we want to belong and feel a part of whatever is happening; even if it is just sitting on a bus quietly looking out the window, doing what everyone else is doing, we belong. We all need to feel that we are wanted, accepted, respected, and appreciated. That is what belonging is all about. Groups spring up everywhere at school, and many of us belong to several. In each class groups are formed whether it be because of common friends or interests or just because the seating chart has placed those people together. Whatever the reason, a group is formed and a feeling of security established. Groups are born at lunchtime too, as people gather on the stairs, at a certain table, or in a certain room to eat and socialize. These lunchtime friends prevent the loneliness of wandering the halls alone or of trying to find a spot for one in the lunchroom. People searching for their niche might join a club or team. In spite of the bashing heads and the yelling in a sport such as football, the team members become really close friends, and give each other a lot of moral support and encouragement. Belonging, too, can come from conforming, often to unwritten dress codes. The only first-grader in the school wearing purple velveteen pants usually feels a little weird, but when supplied with a pair of Levis for Kids, the weirdness disappears. Have you ever looked at your mom's yearbook? Check out the saddle shoes, bobby socks, pleated skirts and cashmere sweaters. You think she looked pretty funny, right? She had no choice! If she hadn't worn that, she might not have had as many friends. Today, we can almost wear whatever we want and not feel outcast. Finding groups to be a part of and conforming to social dress codes helps give one that special feeling of belonging. Sometimes, though, merely wearing a fashionable skirt doesn't provide one with enough of that feeling. The answer to the resulting loneliness may be . . .a cult. A person's reasons for joing a cult, one which destroys choice and emphasizes strict rituals, are often a mystery unless you realize that a cult provides, along with an intense feeling ol belonging and being loved, an insulation from the world. As life forces decision after decision, the only decision made may be, paradoxically, to not make one. Let something else do the decision-making. If that something is a cult, decisions are eliminated because choice is eliminated. And so, the diverse groups of high school can later give way to one group that demans everything of its members; the feeling of belonging is overcome in time by no feeling at all. Personal identity, individual identity is lost, and group identity is the only thing left. Groups should exist for the individual, rather than the individual existing for the group. The feeling of belonging is a security blanket which can be either positive or negative, depending on the pressure to conform within the group. When people are surrounded by those who are supportive, unconfining, and caring, they can realize their full potential and become the best person they can be. It gives the student body a chance to observe and participate in some of the traditions that have been built up through the years and to make new traditions to carry on in future years. One tradition which has been carried on annually for many years is the election of a Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln. These two people are chosen for their special investment in Lincoln. They are involved in school activities and are important because of their service to our school. 153 Triple L (Loyal Lincoln Lynx) is definitely one of Lincoln's most valuable organizations. All through the year members are very busy doing such things as making baskets of food for needy families at Thanksgiving , filling Christmas stockings for Red Cross, Christmas caroling at retirement homes and hospitals, sponsoring the school blood drive, helping with school registration, and also helping with Freshmen orientation. 1 Adviser: Mrs. Day 2 President: Karla McLean 3 Vice-Pres.: Sarah Cooper 4 Secretary: Melissa Morrow 5 Treasurer: Audrey Lamar 6 Activity Coordinator:Della Kostelnik 7 Activity Coordinator:Julliane Palmgren 8 Activity Coordinator: Patty Steele 154 9 Ophelia Airey 10 Jennie Cornell 11 Paula Dumas 12 Robert Fingar 13 Michelle McCarty 14 Kim Palmer 15 Delia Perla 16 Pam Ritzenthaler 17 Carol Sajonia 18 Kim Shaw 19 Anne Wang WOMEN'S TRACK Coach: Clifford Townsend Assistant Coach: Charlene Lacro Sheri Andersen, Susan Atkinson, Rosie Bulzomi, Jeatonic Christian, Angela Colman, Djuna Davis, Paula Dumas, Elaine Evans, Sharon Gartrell, Wanda Gartrell, Tracy Green, Jwana Hammonds, Alice Herron, Valarie Hunter, Lisa Johnson, Pam Jordan, Barbara Ross, Becky Schurr, Sylvia Schweinberger, Liz Stolzheise, Maria Tsoukalas, Shannon Williams, Sharyl Williams, Rosanne Williamson, Julie Willman 156 Not Pictured Brian Alben Mike Cummings Aaron Dean Mike Hardacre Carol Hicks - Manager Dave Hodsden Kent Kammerer -Coach Gordon Kaplan Tay Proctor Alex Raptis Mike Rollins Todd Stallworth Mike Sylvan David Teeny Terry White 1st row Taku Hansen John Jesse Dan Crimmin Gene Andersen Alpha Buford Tony Willson Carla Wildridge - Manager Ron Evenson Deby Freeman - Manager John Belair - Manager Lance Alba 2nd row Steve Northey Ben Batayola Steve Wolf Cedric Smith Sylvester Young Lael Urguhart - Manager Marie Shumway - Manager Bill Hutchins - Manager 3rd row Curtis Hicks - Coach Pete Miranda Ron McCray Dave Mortenson David Burns Darrell Watkins Luc Reneau Jeff Mills Brad McClure - Coach Sandy Burlingame - Managei 159 VARSITY Glynn Omoto David George ouston Teresa Emerv Kristen Baumgartner Helen Ngu Huyen Nguyen Not Pictured Varsity Kathy Macdonald Terri Fyfe George Quijance Jon Trethewey U.S. hockey triumph GOLD SILVER A U.S. War Warning to Soviets Iran Inquiry The American dream Afghan Rebels Claim Heavy Fighting Ban on N-waste Thejs Passed by House Sfes The best ideas are the ideas that help people Gas Ration Plan y c1 j • t Mahres ICC tjKrCltlTh IS ' pamper your face Best U.S. Hope . mo Heiden stricken by Climbs ■ P -onf „„ oft'1 House Passes N-waste Ban 164 Lincoln closure: to be or not to be 3 stowaways now attend Lincoln Teacher coach suspended •— = Freshman class leads activity card sales m o Tackling Lynx upset O’Dea E Green Lake gets face lift — Jj TOTEM again rates All-American u 'I Ballard bows out, ‘Love’s Holiday’ •= m men cagers still undefeated Custodian injured on job Victor number 2 Undefeated wrestlers down Lakeside Bowlers predict victory METRO CHAMPS Grades can determine How spirited are you? pail Of yOUr future Recycling is better than burning. stenmark Boies, principal O-L llC o dies Billy Graham Injured in Bathtub Fall Student in coma after accident 165 ELECTIONS COMMITTEE 1.
