It became computerized and the staff is really happy about it. The computer now sends home letters to parents when students are in danger of failing. That means the clerks have more time to attend to other matters. The new system is not only for attendance there are also spaces for teachers to fill in codes to have parents contacted if students were failing because of something besides poor attendance. Dur- ing tough playoff competition the other teams were bigger, taller, meaner. At the final, most important basketball game, three-fourths of the Lincoln fans were locked out of Ennis High School because the opposition fans got there first and the gym was packed with not even standing room left. Even after it was all over and the Tigers had lost their bid for a shot at the state competi- tion, there was no lamenting or useless complaining, but pride and optimisim for next year's chances. And that,s what spirit really is all about! ttopl Even a torrential downpour during most of the Madison football game didn't keep the fans away. tcenterl Spirit messages taped to player's lockers helped psych up the team. In fast paced action, the boys managed to average 70.1 points per game. Throughout a tough academic season, the team had to bench only three players, a better record than most other schools managed. Coach Alex Gillum's run-and-gun strategy allowed the team to maximise on shooting ability. MVP Bobby Johnson, a 5'7 forward, sums up the season as fast, fun and gratifying. There's always the fun of itq the last minute deadlinesg the missing storiesg the last second effort to make the grade and avert disaster. Meeting deadlines is the most frustrating part of journalism, confesses senior Shirley Lankford, 'ibut seeing your story on the page, makes up for it, j' she continued. Other perks include being inveterate gossips in a legitimate cause and being the first to know when big news breaks. When the space shuttle crashed, for example, the journalism staff was the first to get the news from an alert mother who called seconds after the event took place. When I think of 86, l'll invariably think of trage- dy. The year started out with singer Rick Nelson's l plane crash, then came the big Delta crash at DFW, terrorist bombings killed people all over the world. To me, the shuttle crash was the climax to all that tragedy. It couldn't get any worse, I felt. Thus Education Editor Onita Beall summed up the year. p On the upside, both publications took a first place rating from CSPA and two Lantern staffers, senior Ola Allen and sophomore Terri Porter swept the Dallas Morning News Letter to the Edi- tor competition. 1 5 ftsirtiftif rtf if fi' ffm' 511, iefiff , i -'wil' 1f7e,'.-,uflfislzr-S2 ae' ' - fem ...., :gyei-ifez-wff:f1s fa Eg ' f ly if: 'i Y W Qzisziifzf ' 5 f ii 3 Q f , -' rf 1 r - . ,, ,.,. , , ,,., 59. ,,,, Z, ., ,wwzawpmr ..
