Teachers have inspired us in so many ways. direct and in- direct, that they are permanently placed at the beginning of our ladder. Our classes presented us with the learning of foreign tongues. mathematical equations. memorable history events. and the English composition. As soon as we attained the prin- ciples of these, we sought for additional cul- ture. Some of us falteredg others gained recog- nition. Thus we continued to climb the ladder of education. There were activities. too. that meant something to each person. They offered to us cooperation. kindness, loyalty to our fellow students, and all those qualities which were helpful to our own personal interests. This was our first rung on the ladder of social life. Some of our desired goals were reached in sports. The fumble, the uncompleted pass. and the penaltiesfboth in football and basketball -served only to urge us to try harder. Wve then stepped higher on the ladder of sports- manship. Yes. in school we haye climbed many lad- ders, step by step. Some were insignificantg others. outstanding. Nvhile some of us will end our quest now. a few of us will continue our great climb throughout life. In looking back we realize that we could not have reached a single rung of any ladder if it was not for the school life that has taught us the hopes. joys. sorrows. and problems which will face us throughout life. We shall always remember our school days as the biggest rung of life's great ladder. for they have determined the kind of life each one of us shall lead. Congratulations to the class of 1951 upon your graduation. Even though you have ac- complished your goal and made your dreams come true, new fields of endeavor lie ahead. Today, you are on the threshold of a world that is restless with fear and turmoil. lt is my sincere wish that you may face forward with a courage and faith which will surmount all obstacles. l wish you success and happiness in all your future plans. HIGH SCHCOL PRINCIPAL During the past year our first aim of the high school has been to teach pupils the prin- ciples of social life. Bly twenty years of ex- perience in the field of education have in- creased my belief in this basic responsibility of education. Genuine friendship and mental good feeling are the best bases for cooperative growth midst the many problems that confront young people today in their junior-senior school life. Those who review these pages carefully will readily see the many means by which young people are trained in the better social living of the democratic way of life. y 1 To the class of 1951 I sincerely extend my best wishes for your future endeavors. o DAXIIJ .X. I Jillian Ferenchina Historian .... .... .... . I ulia Torres Sponsor. . . .... Mr. Edward Bouldin Class History We have finally arrived! What a trans- formation has taken place during the past four years. As freshmen we were greener than the well-known meadows. Some of us were intro- duced to the unknown quantities of algebra and to MVeni, vidi, vici in Latin. We struggled through our growing painsw and found ourselves beginning our sophomore year under the presidency of Johnny Howell. In order to help our treasury grow with us, we became super salesmen with peanut brittle, Valentine candy, and Easter eggs as our wares. In our junior year, with HBO Zuppe to lead us, we were still engaged in the process of building our treasury. We waxed dramatic with our presentation of The Passing of the Third Floor Back. We introduced something new and different in the way of dances with our Twirp Dance and Irfobo Dance. The cul- mination of all our efforts came when we acted as hosts to the seniors at our Junior-Senior Prom. The gymnasium became Cinderella's Ballroom under the capable hands of our deco- rating committee. In truth, the magical wand of a Fairy Godmother seemed to have been waved, for the gym was completely trans- formed. During this year, too, we received our class rings to give us the feeling of really nearing our goal. Our transformation was in its last stage as September, 1950, rolled around. It seemed such a short four years in retrospect. During this year with Bo Zuppe leading us again, we danced in Neptune's Kingdom on November 17, 1950. With the coming of the new year every week was filled with numerous activi- ties and with a bit of sadness, for we realized that our school days would soon be at an end. Our thespians really entertained us with the comedy, Cheaper hy lhe Dozen. All too soon the Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, and Com- mencement were upon us. Now our metamorphosis from green fresh- men to lofty seniors was complete. Instead of having a feeling of superiority we feel some- what wistful and humble-wistful, for our high school days are over, humble, for ,we realize how many were the efforts and sacri- fices performed for us in order to see us achieve our goal. IX fliss BROVVN The sight of the glowing torch with its letters C. S. I.. S. recalls to mind the National Honor Society and the qualities necessary for membership in the lVIidland Chapter of this society. The qualities we must possess to be eligible are character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The Society strives to create H11 enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of our high school. The Society has been quite active this year. Some of the projects which were worked out very successfully were the yearly event of the Faculty Valentine Tea, the sale of programs at basketball games, the upkeep of the report peri- od honor roll, and a Whois Who scrapbook. A new duty that the Society has assumed is the language award to be presented to the graduating senior with the highest average in four years of language. The Society has been directed by Nliss Nlilanovich. assisted by Miss Brown. The honor of belonging to the Society should be an incentive for all to strive to attain the symbol of its glow- ing torch as their coat of arms. The Student Council for the vear 1950-51 set for its goal a more progressive Lincoln High School. This student group is composed of representatives from each classg thus its views and opinions reflect those of the school as a whole. The Council, advised by Mr. Dean, engaged in many Worth-vvhile and service-rendering activities. The following were some of their activities: supplying re- freshments for home and visiting players, decorating NE QUQD NIHIS STUDENT COUNCIL the Christmas tree, awarding plaques to the best deco- rated homerooms, providing arm bands for the hall patrols, and many other services. Ilonrlorson L J U N I O R P R O M On May 19, 1950, the long-awaited Junior Prom arrived. After three long years of antici- pation and envy, we were really having a dance all our own. The class chose 6'Cinderella's Ball as its theme. lylany weeks of hard work vvent into readying the gymnasium for the only dance of our junior yearg however we were more than just proud as we walked through our huge pumpkin to our ball room for the evening. The highlight of the evening was the Grand Klarch led by 'Allow Zuppe. our class presi- dent. and followed by George Martich. senior class president. Refreshments were served in the main hall on a table decorated with Cinderella and Prince Charming dolls, with an added attraction of a silver sliiper placed on a blue pillow. We danced the evening away to the music of Eddie Frazier and his orchestra. Just as the prom was long-awaited. so will it never be forgotten. SENIOR DANCE After many weeks of planning and hard Work by the members of our senior class, one of the highlights of our senior year, the Senior Dante, was realized on the night of November 10, 1950. Our theme, iiN9IJlllItQlS Kingdom. was Chosen and carefully planned by the members of the decorating Connnittee. WY! entered the new kingdom through a Cave at the gyni entrance. A picturesque and eller- tive deep sea View of nile green and blue flood lights greeted us. The Grand lVIarCh was headed b L'Bo Zumme. our class resident and his uest. Doris Smith who were followed bv Geor e . f 7 ,, f 7 ., g lVlarticli, a loriner senior Class president, and Lillian Ferenchina, our Class secretary. The Leopards lost only in their class to last year's winner, California, in a game that the Leopards did everything but score the touchdowns and to New Brighton after a hard- fought time in which the Lions knew they were in a contest. Meanwhile, they blasted their arch rival, Beaver, again for the third straight year and also rolled over Hickory, Burgettstown, Mo- naca, and Coraopolis in Class A competition. This year's big veteran line was an important factor in the successes. Led by Frank Badella, all-county center, and Eugene Martell, also an all-county selection, the Leopard forward wall cleaved huge holes for the backs to dance through. This line, molded together by Coach Kaye into the terrific power it was, put in long, gruelling hours on the practice field. Players such as Phil Graham-co-captain with Badellaf Bo'l Zuppe, Steve Milkovich, Joe Poff, and Herb Gailey were the senior linemen who bore the brunt of the battle. This year Co-Coach Wilson started with an inexperienced backfield but soon whipped it into shape. With All-Star selection Walt Davis smashing the line and speedy Dave Beider dashing around the ends, the backs sped into the end zone 19 times, or better than two a game. The other three regulars-'iChicken Boyle, Sam Prodonovich, and Jack Gibson- contributed no small part to the cause. These two components, working together, were the reason why our Leopards this year really showed their claws. H MIDLAND FOOTBALL TEAM FIRST ROW: T. Pantoni, F. Fernandez, J. Gibson, D. Reider, W. This transition was a bit slow at first, but they soon became a team to be feared. They were the only club to whip both Monaca and New Brighton, runner-up and winner of Section Nine, respectively. They defeated everyone once and Bochester twice. Coach Dershimer continually switched his boys around, usually work- ing from a nucleus of Stan Yukica and Tony Bernardi. He used Paul Farnan, Frank Badella, Bill Murphy, Eugene Martell, Adam Krivoshia, Mike Karas, Bob Hibbard, and Leonard Tepsic along with .lack Gibson and Frank Timblin very effectively. The Leopards swept to a 6 and 4- record and a 13 and 9 total, many times on the long legs of Yukica and the untiring, seemingly endless efforts of Bernardi, along with sometimes unbeliev- able shooting of the rest of the crew. Although they are losing Yukica, Badella, Murphy, and Gibson by graduation, the future looks bright for an up-and-coming Leopard Club. BASKETBALL RESERVES FIRST ROW: R. Hilihard, M. Ungethuem, L. This year's Beserves certainly did show promise as their enviable record proves. This years club was composed almost entirely of sophomores, many of whom were on last year's Champion- ship Junior High team. Some ol' the more regular players were Bob Hihbard, Mike Karas, Dick Lewis, Leonard Tepsic, and Bucky Ungethuem who were all moved up to varsity, Frank Tiniblin, a junior who played on both clubs, also .lule D'Angelo, Jim LelVlasters, and Jack Hall. lVlost. of the boys played every game, for the regulars would run up the score quickly, then the subs would hold the other club at. bay as shown by their thirteen straight wins. We have a right to be proud of our reserves who were very ably coached by Mr. Edward Bouldin, and we look for them in coming years. lklidland Nlidland Klidland Klidland Nlidland Nlidland Nlidland Nlidla nd Nlidland Kiidland Nlidland 44 511 28 43 42 44 49 45 5 2 39 57 RESERVE SCHEDULE . .
