T Foaawoao i Let's stop for a moment in time to muse over our Mcomings and goings these last school years. What better place is there for reviewing them than the murals around the auditorium stage! Indeed, these murals depict all the phases of our lives here in school made possible by that firm foundation--the huge belching mills of our town, as seen in the lower left- hand corner-and our small community of average home-like houses, seen in the right hand corner. We realize now that we shall miss the culture and leisure that the vigorous figure in the very center offers us. Yes-here in school wc could attain these. The murals present the various activities and studies with which we are able to secure a place in the National Honor Society and the Student Coun- cil, goals without end. Yes! These are all to be had by each one of us. Doesn't the scene of liberty, equality, and fraternity prove that all of this can be ours through books? Man rises to unforeseen heights through study, through scientific research into which we are introduced by chemistry lab and through manipulation of hand skills. Long and hard have we struggled in the aprons we made in Home Economics, the perfect letter that the Commercial Department demands, the verb and conjugation in Latin, the authors and poets in English class, and even in drawing houses, cats, and straight lines in art class. Let's look to the right of Leisure and down thru the right hand panel. Relaxation and en- joyment of social events certainly stand out in the mural. There is the gym apparatus, the piano on which we battered dance tunes, the proms and banquets we anticipated the whole year long. Remember the football and basket- ball games we attended, following our proud high stepping band to its invigorating beats. What gave us our desire to progress, to move up, to achieve the first in everything? What spurred us on? Our answer lies in the top right hand corner. Do you see it? School Spirit! That is one subject we'll never forget. No amount of time can erase it. Each mural has become a cherished symbol of our education and the fun and joy that ac- companies it. Not only does it pay tribute to the teachers and to the students, but it sets forth a pictorially written record of our school life in its curricular and extra-curricular activ- ities. We are grateful to the far-seeing group who seventeen years ago began the exacting work of making the stencils. In 1933 Miss Dickey and Miss Burchfield, Midland School art directors, began this momentous piece of work, and three months later the project was completed with the assistance of Mr. Kaye and various students. Time changes, man changes, but the murals stand solemnly as reminders of what we were and of what we might get to be.
