Yblllllldllllll Illllllllll 441441 Illlllllllllllllllllll COMPANY POLICY fflontmuedj At that moment John was thxnkmg of weathel He had seen all so1ts of weather through that wmdow A year ago he saw the December snows as they lay on the roof tops then the Ap11l thaws the beaut1ful sunsets of May the heat of July and August October s autumn and now December aga1n But tomght lt was 1a1n1ng It w as a very dlsmal ra1n dalk and unpromlslng Just l1ke ll1S own 1 e Yes It was a year ago tonlght that he had first begun to come here For s1x months before that he had been out of work too for elghteen months he had not earned a slngle dollar erghteen months smce the shop 1n whxch he had been em ployed had been forced to close down and fo1 the first tlme s1nce he was twenty years old he had found hlmself wlthout a Job It xx as a stlange sltuatxon to h1m and lt was the rnost dlfflcult ploblem he had eve1 faced For John Bradley not to work vs as unthxnkable A year and a half ago he began to use the saungs he had always thought would buy them a home xn the country when he retlred They we1e not much and they were all gone w1th1n the year After that h1s son was forced to leave the D1esel school and look for work H1s forty dollar a month salary as a runner on the Stock Exchange was what the famlly had been on for three months And st1ll the Old Man couldnt get a Job though God knows he had t11ed h1s best So John was st1ll comxng to the Tr1bune between four and slx every day except Sunday The OHICE was l1ke a second home to h1m Ex eryone was frlendly and cor the company phys1c1an whom he sometlmes met were all h1s fr1ends If they could theyd gxve h1m a chance he knew that but apparently no prmter ever qult the Tr1bune It was practlcally a l1fet1me Job fine pay and b9S1d9S all the men knew how tough It was on the OutS1d6 In the sllence of the OHICG the clock on the wall cl1cked as It always d1d when the mlnute hand reached twelve F1ve o clock One more hour to go John saw that there was a sllght break In the clouds to the west By hangxng around for two houxs after the Illgllt shlft went on he hoped that a nlghts work m1ght offer 1tself through someones absence but usually the cxew struggled along 1f they knew that a man would be out for only one nlght Needless to say hard tlmes were conduclve to adm1rable attendance lecords Just then Mr Rankm sm1l1ng as usual entered Good evenmg Mxss OConnor Good evenmg John he called Hello Mr Rankln they both replled ID UDISOH then they looked at each other and laughed at the comcldence Sure IS rotten weather but lt looks llke It wlll clear up Rankln observed Anythmg up Mlss OConnor Only thxs telegram she sa1d handlng hxm the yellow envelope Oh and wlth a wlnk to the secretary thlS must be lt Then after read frm 0s000000 0400000 - ' uv A' 'l Y .
