And though he was born in a house with only one door and one window, it was written that he would come to know many doors, many windows . . . During the year 1817 little Abe Lincoln . . . helped his father cut down trees and notch logs for . . . their new cabin . . . A few days of this year Nancy sent him to school . . . Abe and Sally hiking eighteen miles a day . . . He went to three different schools in Indiana besides two in Kentucky . . . altogether about four months of school . . . These were the years when he was handling the ax . . . where there was a chance for a certain growth. And so he grew. At the Republican Convention in Illinois two fence rails bearing the inscription 'Abraham Lincoln, the Rail Candidate for President in 1860' were brought in.
