The Lincoln team had an easy time in defeating the finalists in tlie district tournament the year before. winning 259-5. Stephtn found it difficult to penetrate the local defense and missed many chan :es to lneak in for scores. Hoium was effective under the basket in this fir:-t regular basketball game and Dablow was high point man sinkng 'T field goals and a pair of foul shots. The next week-end the Prowlers took a four day trip over to Moorhead and Yalley City, both State Champs of their re- spective statcs tl.e previous year. The Moorhead Spuds show- ed midseason form in winning 26-12. Their smooth-working. fast-breaking quint ran up an 8-1 lead the first quarter and in- creased it to lt?-2 at the half. The Prowlers lacked light and -speed, and the Spuds had an easy time breaking up the Prowler plays. Tle guards missed many chances to pass to the lanky ll mium, concentrating too much on Captain llahlow who was covered. In the second half the Prowlers made a determined confe-back fighting the Spuds on even terms. but they could not overcome the 1-1 point lead and went down 243-12. Rusty helped the eo-me-lraek with 2 field Goals and a free throw. 6 The next night. however, the Prowlers showed mush better form and defeated the former North Dakota State Champs 21-19. lt was anyhody's game right up to the final whistle. The Hi- Liners jumped into a T-if lead in the first quarter but Dablow dropped in three baskets while Yalley City made one tying the eount Sf all at the half. The lead see-sawed during the entire last half until the Hi-l.iners had a 17-153 edge. Rip scored twice but Nugent broke the knot giving Yalley City a two point lead with the game nearly over. Rip again came through with two baskets giving' the l'rowlers their winning margin. Captain Dablow played one of his greatest games in scoring 17 of Thief River's 121 points. The Prowlers met their third first class opponents in two weeks when Grand Forks came over to avenge the football defeat they suffered in Thief l1iver's hands. VVith a smooth-running and passing attack, the Forkers ran up a 10-2 lead before the Prowl- ers got their defense organized and their offense functioning. The Hay's men settled down somewhat in the second canto but the Central team still had a 113-ti lead when the gun sounded for the half. In coming back the second half to win the game, the Prowlers turned in one of the greatest halves they played all season. The Grand Forks team won all their other games and was considered the outstanding quint in North Dakota. The Prowler defense was just about impregnable and the Forks team which broke through for eight field goals in the nrst half was only able to el 501- Howard Hoium C-CllfL'l' Crrlifailz-rfefr Rtwy Lullsull l 0r7t'rIl'cf slip in one during the last two periods. The Hays' machine suffered a let down the third quarter and llagley began to crawl up to within tive points of the llrowlers but a spurt by the Thief River team gave them their lil point margin at the end of the game. The game was extremely rough with many fouls being called on both teams. The following' week the l'rowlers took a trip over to XX'arren and crushed their traditional rivals and leading contenders for district honors by a ?5-9 score. lt took the first half for the Thief River quint to get accustomed to the tioor. The Lumtberjacks. however. recovered and were leading at half time I5-10. .Xt the start of the third period it seetned as if the l'rowlers might arrive on even terms with their Bemidji opponents but a spurt brought the score 30-17 in favor of the Robbinsmen. :X l'rowler comeback of I0 points in the fourth period carried the llays' machine to within three points of the lead. llemidji stop- ped them there. however, and scored a field goal themselves to give them their tive point margin. The score at the half favored the l'rowler's '22-ll. Captain Dabloxv played a good game sinking 18 points to take high scoring honors. According to tradition the W'arren team came over and hand- ed the I'rowlers its third defeat 272-21. The llays' men were still in a slump and could not seem to play together as a unit. XYarren on the otherhand turned in one of the best games and llliillagdl to nose out the l rowlers when Mickey Peterson dropped in a long shot just as the gun went off. Warren took advantage of the disorganized Lincoln defense and broke through for many easy shots. After poor ball handl- ing and a lot of scrambling the first half ended ln-it in favor of the l'rowlers. Warren came back strong in the third period and established a lead of lti-lil. The game hit a terrific pace during the last canto and with 50 seconds to go Dablow put the Prowl- ers in the lead '21-'20, l'eterson's long shot as the gun went off won for Warren. The l'rowlers got revenge on the Ilemiidji five when they tripped the Lumberjacks 26-13. A new starting' line-up pulled the llays' machine out of its slump and they played good basket- ball the rest of the season. The game started out slow because of the high tension of the players who foresaw a close game. The first quarter ended 2 all. The llays' machine found itself in the second period and ran up a ll-l lead by half time. The l'rowlers had things pretty much their own way during the second half with the l,umberjacks playing listless ball. There were a lot of fouls called during the game but not many of the gift shots were made. In a mid-week game the Vrowlers slaughtered Roseau .lt-Sl. The Thief River Quint played a hit and miss game letting Roseau get through for easy shots which they obligingly missed. The l'rowlers could not connect much better, however, and only had a ti-2'lead at the first period. The offense got going better the second quarter and piled up a 24-T lead at the half. In the last T canto the reserves were sent in and broke through for quite a few field goals. The Lfrookston team finally fotmd itself and after losinv nine straight games defeated NVarren. Against the l'rowlers they put up a good battle but could not stop the hard driving and fast breaking flays' machine. The Lincoln team dropped in four baskets before Crookston had time to even call time out. The Simso coached men got together a little better but were still behind 13-5 at the end of the half. The Prowlers were a little over-confident in the second half and a determined Crookston team began to creep up but the llays' men checked the rally before it became overly dangerous. . N h The final score was 23-18. Hoiuni, lanky center, played one of his best games and was high point man with 8 points. The leading roles in the large cast were taken hy Don Snyder as jolm Ilruce, millionaire: llarriet Helquist as Nora Nlullett, daughter of the pro- prietor of the Mullet Hotel: Roy Lonson as Tommy Lansing a young artist: and Gladys llowers as Claudia llarret. The story is laid in a small town hotel run by Martha Mullet, played by Ruth Smithers, who is aided by her daughter Nora. john llruce returns to Matasquam, his old home town, to purchase a plot of ground for a pottery factory. The land is owned by Abner Ketchum, the local Shylock. played by Wilson Dokken: who plans to turn it into a cem- etery and won't sell. jolm stops at the Mullet Hotel as he is a boyhood frienil of Martha's. Circumstances make him assistant manager of the hotel and make him pretend that he has lost his fortuneg while at the hotel he aids the romance of Claudia and Tommy and himself wins Nora Mullet. Ile tricks Abner out of his cemetery with the aid of llenny, .'Xbner's nephew and a high-pressure salesman played by james VVarner and Martin, Alvin Christotferson, who is llruce's business manager. The story is immensely brightened by Thea Gunder- so11 as lilmine Ludeen. the hired girl, who convulses the audience with laugh- ter, and the line acting of Katherine Patton as Mrs. lflarret, and the French dancing' teachers Yor and jura Charente, played by junior Prichard and Ruth jacobson. Other very humorous situations are furnished by Klillicent Arnold and Orpha tiahrielson as Alphecca and Alcheba Spinster, Rip Dablow the buss- man, .Nlv Yistauuet as he valet, and Myrtle Lufkin as llella, a very rude hotel guest. . lf the Seniogplay pgs an imnrnse success. a great deal of the credit must he given to the Qcv ' afgl' us ' advertising it received. Under the manag- ership of jack l i s boys engineered a novel campaign includ- ing the distributioigofgffee tigketsg 'rom an airplane. E 1, 1 Q . 1 Q iq wk j ? m X E E 'NIA' -' . Then at the end of the year their desires are stirred by the graduation of the Seniors for high honors when they too shall graduate. .-Xltliougfli few mention the fact nearly all of these lmeginners would like to ohtain the highest honor of all, the position of valedictorian. Some lose this desire and become lazy and indifferent hut the hest march on, piling' up Ns and l!'s towards their goal. .Xnd certainly this is a laudable ambition. The difference in honor points is so slight, a fraction of a point, that no real estimate of the ability of the two can he taken from them. ALUMNI REUNION The annual alumni reunion was held at the beginning of the Christmas vacation in the Sons of Norway Hall. After an interesting program with several speeches and a few selections by the High School Male Quartet. the election of officers was held. Math liarzen was elected president for the year 1930. The class of 19:20 received a prize of a box of chocolates for having the largest at- tendancc. .Xfter a few dances for which :Xl Dybvick's orchestra played. a light lunch was served. The dancing then continued for the rest of the evening. This func- tion is one of the most interesting traditions of l.incoln High. LETTERMEN'S BANQUET The mcn were honored by the High School April 24. when the' .Xnnual I.ettermen's llanqnet was held in the Home Economics room. Seventeen athletes were present together with Superintendent Holmquist of VVarren. Superintend- ent llye, Principal ll. C. lland. and other male members of the High and Central School lfaculties. The banquet opened by singing the school song followed by a talk on reserve football by Coach Chalmers. Rip Dablow. who had proved to be an invaluable leader in football and basketball. sang his swan song and lloium. captain-elect. replied. The basketball lettermen elected .I loium to fill Dablow's place in basket- ball and again lloium voiced his appreciation. Mr. llye in a talk entitled Our lloys told of some instances in which he had been proud of the Thief River lialls team. Mr. llolmquist was then called upon and he traced the development of athletics from the time when he entered educational work to their present standing in all High Schools and Colleges. The last and perhaps the saddest part of the program came when Coach liays said Good llye. Fellows. ,Ile expressed his regret in leaving so soon and re- minded the athletes that he had thoroughly enjoyed working with them. As a token to the basketball team which for three periods outfought and outplayed Moorhead, runners-ups in the state tournament. he gave gold basketballs with their names engraved on one side. Ile ended his speech with an invitation to come and see him in Iiismark if any of the athletes should happen to pass through. Mr. lland acted as chairman and gave each speaker a fitting introduction. -l39l-- .L I JUNIOR AND SENIOR MASQUERADE The .lunior-Senior Masquerade was held in the lilk's Hall, Friday, May 2nd, .X multitude of gay costumes appeared on the dance Hoor. llrides danced in the arms of lndiansg and Turkish maidens with slant-eyed Chinamen. Some of the cleverest and most beautiful costumes were awarded prizes. Lois Uden re- ceived a prize for the prettiest girls' costume, and Rip Dablow received a prize for the funniest girls'. Donald Snyder was judged the funniest boy, and Ray- mond Novak was awarded the prize for the prettiest boys' costume. l'rizes were then given to the faculty members. Miss Greenland and Bliss Aasgaard divided the prize for the funniest faculty costume and the judges awarded Bliss l'eirson a prize as the most beautifully dressed faculty member. J UN IOR-SENIOR PROM For the first time a l'rom was held in place of the annual banquet which the junior Class gave to the Seniors. The new idea was carefully worked out and the entertainment was held on Saturday, May IU. in the Sons of Norway Hall. The decoration scheme was Egyptian and was wonderfully worked out. The illusion of being in an immense tent was given by the streamers suspended to the sides of the hall. Artificial palms were scattered about and burning incense lent an Oriental touch. The entertainment began with a program. The actors in the allegorical skit were garbed in ligyptian robes. James Newland. as chief of the junioranius tribe, was considering the admittance of a large band of Senioranians to the tribe. VVith the aid of his consellors he decided to admit them and ordered a dance as a celebration. The grand march lcd by Xlr. llye and Miss johnson, officially began the dancing. Music was furnished by an excellent orchestra from Grand Forks. The festivities continued for the rest of the evening. the dancing being interrupted only by the refreslnnents. Those who did not dance had the opportunity to play cards in the card room. Mr. Grinley sang two solos during the refreshments and was enthusiastically received. FERVID RESl'I.KRl'll A new rlan fo conducllnl-T examinations was introdurel at the last meeting of the Board of Education by Professor Carl Swenson, instructor in science and director of the Municipal and Juvenile racketeers of this falr city. Having arrived at the conclusion that there was too much cooperation and broth- erhood tin other words, cheat- lng l during examinations, he took upon his shoulders the burden of seeking a solution to the problem. After spending -HW days and -HW n l gh t s ir fervid research work. he finally drew up a set of fourteen ruler' to be strictly adhered to in all future exams. The school boa rd accepted these rules unanimously after a hot discussion over the question as to whether they were too len- ient or not. In fact the dis- cussion became so hot that the local police force and fire de- partment ha-d to be called out to subdue the riot. The rules and regulations set up in the Swenson Method are as follows: 1. All exams to be held ln n hermetically sealed l'fl0l!l. 2. A distance of not less than ten feet shall intervene between each student. 3. All students searched be- fore entering and leaving the room. 4. Examiners will be requir- ed to wear horse blinds. Instructors shall be placed not less than fifteen feet apart along the walls and between examinees. tl. All instructors shall be provided with high powered field glasses. T. Dlctaphones are to be placed in ev ery convenient place, such as behind pictures, under chairs, etc. N. ltlxamlnees will be requir- ed to wear cotton batting in their ears and gags in their mouths. il. ltlxaminees shall have their left arm bound behind them. ln case of a left-handed person his right arm shall be bound. ltl. When a student has fin- ished his paper, it will be put in an envelope and sealed. This envelope will be deposited in a strong box under guard of a machine gunner, tl-larry Robin- son preferablyj Il. Each student shall be subjected to a third degree upon leaving the room to ascertain whether he has cheated o noi, 12. In marking the papers. instructors should always give the student the dirty end of a doubt. 13. After all is said and done. lil roints shall be deducted from each paper in the rossibility of cheating' that was not detected. 14. Any student violating these rules shall forfeit his pa- pe . STREET BRAWL IN LOWER HALL li u rl y lirute .lssaults l'n- suspeeting Lad Adolphe Johnson was in the Physicians Hospital today re- covering from injuries received in a brutal attack during' the noon-hour rush y e s t e r d a y. Charles Frissell. better known as Huis , was held in the munlcipal hoosegow on charges of cruelty to animals, but was later released because of insuf- ficient evidence. According' to the reports of witnesses, the affair began by a remark by Adolphe. lt is report- ed that Adolphe called Charley Holstein , not knowing that thc center of his remark was standing directly behind him. Charley didn't lose any time in getting into action, and the viay he tied Adolphe into knots would make Gus Sonenberg look like an amateur. After about ten minutes of plain and fancy manbandllng. the hoys were able to remove Adolphe's left ear from the coathook over which Charley had draped it. He was then rushed to the hospital and examined. The examination revealed that ne is suffering from fractures in three placcsfingrown toenails. dislo- cated eyeballs, and superiority complex. His physicians say that he will be able to attend school by next September. Do you miss out on the choice bits of gossip and scandal? ANSWER COLUMN Conducted by Harry Robinson In-ar lidltorz At Coach Hays' call for track men. I reported and have been working faithfully. One day Lon Cheney dropped a wad of gum ln the starting hole: and when I hurled myself forward my foot stayed behind thus spralning my ankle. I then went out for the dlscus but as l had been a former dishwasher in a hash house, I could not throw It without hurting' my conscience. But I was un- daunted. I next tried the shot-put and had to give it up because my ears interfered. I am now at loss as to what I should try next. Can you help me? Poker Turnwall. Answer: Try the flfty yard cake-walk. Dear Editor: I think I'm ln love. My heart flutters like an autum leaf in a gals-T and I have to swallow about ten times to keep it below my Adam's apple, when she speaks to me. How can I win her? Forrest Anderson. Answer: Try to go about without. a cap the year around. In-ar lfldltor: I became untangled in a wrestling' match with James WVarner aml though I attempted to forfeit the match, Chalmers wouldn't permit me. James tackled me so hard my glass eye fell out on my chest where his head collided with lt. They took it out through my back. I'm still going around with my feeble frame and almost feel like ending it all . VVhat would you suggest? Specs Lawrence Olson. Answer: This ls an extremely difficult case. but lf you will send me ten dollars. I will forward ten easy lessons in muscle building. U. O. D. -losi- EDITORIAL STAFF Jerome I-llllard .......... Dear Sir: Considering only the wel- fare of others who might have suffered as I have, I now take my typewriter In hand and write this letter. For years my hair has been falling out by the dozens, I awoke in the A. M. with my pillow covered with hair, I was forever fishing hair out of my soup. One day a friend, I.ooey H e t 1 a n d , recommended Neverfall Hair Tonic. Still skeptical to the extreme, I, like a drowning man clutch- at a straw. bought a bottle. And now look at me: I could pose as Hairbreadth Hairy any day. I'm the guy who played Esau In the latest Broadway hit Pain and Abel. The other da y l accident- ally spllled some of this marvelous tonic on the rug aml the cat. Now the cat looks like a porcupine and I have to shave the rug every morning.
