Prologue This year has been a year of machines and technological advancement. We have watched a man walk on the moon, seen steaks broiled in seconds with micro-wave heat, listened to computers tell us how to live our lives and witnessed the transplantation of human body parts. Despite all our scientific achievements however, we found that 1969-70 was not without problems. We saw poverty take its toll all over the world. We saw racism--a — festering cancer in the body of America. We saw campus demonstrations, anti-war protests, a rising crime-rate, a shrinking dollar, a growing population, an increasing threat of pollution and a deadly war that seems destined to go on forever. But behind all of these things--the good and the bad, the successes and the failures, the hopes and the disillusionments--we saw a spirit--a spirit which gloried in its tri- umphs, wept at its failures, and, most important, never stopped trying. That spirit, of course, is MAN. In this, the 1970 Quill, we hope to present a look, our own small look, at man. We hope to portray the human side of Lincoln High School--the student, the teacher, the administrator, the office worker, the maintenance man--anyone and everyone who is a part of the life blood of L. H. S. We dedicate this book to Lincoln High School and to the spirit of man which prevails there. Dedication We respectfully dedicate the 1970 Quill to Mr. Ron- ald Foot, teacher, coach and friend, who devoted 38 years of his life helping to educate and guide young Lin- colnites. Mr. Foot retired last June, thus ending a dareer which saw him teaching the children of his former stu- dents. During these years he served as a teacher in the Business Education Department; Chairman of that same department; coach; and, finally, athletic director. His wit, wisdom and personality have already been sadly missed this year at Lincoln. Mr. Foot was a man who took rules and regulations seriously. He constantly set and maintained high stan- dards for his students and athletes. And although some students grumbled occasionally about that tough Mr. Foot or about how much work he was making them do, it was usually these same students who came back later in life to thank him for making them realize that they could actually do a lot more than they thought they could. Mr. Foot was once heard to say, I want Lincoln High School to be Number One, and when we reach that goal I want us to stay Num- ber One! Certainly, no one ever worked harder than Mr. Foot himself, to achieve that goal. It is, therefore, with a great deal of pride and fond memories, that we dedi- cate this book to Mr. Ronald Foot, Number One in our book! A proud family and a proud principal look on as Mr. Foot displays the plaque he received from faculty and stu- dents for Outstanding Service.
