The Quill 1970 jWBClilin 'W nwised hind dney Fbitier: e Long Journey STRIDE Li oy Claude Brow FREEDOM Lincoln High School Milwaukee, Wisconsin •The Year Begi ns . . . Opening day--September 2, 1969. Right On, Lincoln! Bring on the books, the tests, the dances, the games, etc. These Lincolnites are ready! (For a look at how these same Lincolnites looked at the END of the year, turn to page 104. ) Dedication We respectfully dedicate the 1970 Quill to Mr. Ron- ald Foot, teacher, coach and friend, who devoted 38 years of his life helping to educate and guide young Lin- colnites. Mr. Foot retired last June, thus ending a dareer which saw him teaching the children of his former stu- dents. During these years he served as a teacher in the Business Education Department; Chairman of that same department; coach; and, finally, athletic director. His wit, wisdom and personality have already been sadly missed this year at Lincoln. Mr. Foot was a man who took rules and regulations seriously. He constantly set and maintained high stan- dards for his students and athletes. And although some students grumbled occasionally about that tough Mr. Foot or about how much work he was making them do, it was usually these same students who came back later in life to thank him for making them realize that they could actually do a lot more than they thought they could. Mr. Foot was once heard to say, I want Lincoln High School to be Number One, and when we reach that goal I want us to stay Num- ber One! Certainly, no one ever worked harder than Mr. Foot himself, to achieve that goal. It is, therefore, with a great deal of pride and fond memories, that we dedi- cate this book to Mr. Ronald Foot, Number One in our book! A proud family and a proud principal look on as Mr. Foot displays the plaque he received from faculty and stu- dents for Outstanding Service. Prologue This year has been a year of machines and technological advancement. We have watched a man walk on the moon, seen steaks broiled in seconds with micro-wave heat, listened to computers tell us how to live our lives and witnessed the transplantation of human body parts. Despite all our scientific achievements however, we found that 1969-70 was not without problems. We saw poverty take its toll all over the world. We saw racism--a — festering cancer in the body of America. We saw campus demonstrations, anti-war protests, a rising crime-rate, a shrinking dollar, a growing population, an increasing threat of pollution and a deadly war that seems destined to go on forever. But behind all of these things--the good and the bad, the successes and the failures, the hopes and the disillusionments--we saw a spirit--a spirit which gloried in its tri- umphs, wept at its failures, and, most important, never stopped trying. That spirit, of course, is MAN. In this, the 1970 Quill, we hope to present a look, our own small look, at man. We hope to portray the human side of Lincoln High School--the student, the teacher, the administrator, the office worker, the maintenance man--anyone and everyone who is a part of the life blood of L. H. S. We dedicate this book to Lincoln High School and to the spirit of man which prevails there. Although the turnout was small, die mood was magical and the music mystical as Lincolnites and their dates danced, rapped and sipped the Oriental punch. Tuxedos and formals added a sophisti- cated touch to the oriental set- ting and brought a new life to the old Lincoln gym. Because of the small turn- out this was die last prom held at LHS. We hope that the prom tradition can be re- vived at LHS in the future and therefore make more evenings like A Night in a Black Orient happy memories to Lincolnites. Afro — Hispano- American Day Gettin' it together, bro! was a commonly heard expression around L.H.S. on the 5th of November as the first Afro-Hispano-American Day was held, Dashikis and naturals and som- breros and serapes” were the order of the day as students and teachers pre- sented a look into Afro and Latin Amer- ican cultures. Mr. Jake Beason, African History teacher, originated the idea for the day, but he was quick to point out that is was a team effort by students and teachers alike that helped to make it the success that it was. H.S. this year. Stage machinery was dusted off and the stage once again felt the foot- steps and heard the voices of those who chose to brave the footlights. Two one-act plays were presented: Three's a Crowd, and Sparkin’. However, drama students soon found out that it wasn't as simple as merely dusting off the machinery and getting up on stage and doing their thing. They soon discovered that while it was easy to memorize lines it was another thing to get up on stage and per- form in front of a live audience. But, judging from the great response and enthusiastic applause of the audi- ence, it was evident that they had performed well. It was indeed, a welcome revival! Pat Thompson seems to find something funny, while Isaac Gonzales, Declinton Robinson, Michelle Allen and Edgardo Ortiz seem to be on the verge of an argument, in the play Three's a Crowd. Barbara Reynolds, Sandra Blackmon and Darlene Bridges occupy themselves with household chores in a scene from the humorous play, Sparkin'. SPORTS 1969 Golf Team Head down! Eyes on the ball! Left arm straight! These words were heard over and over again by members of the LHS 1969 Golf Team as Coach Ment- zer worked with them on the fundamentals of this tricky, often frustrating, game. Many of the members were playing the game for the first time this year, learning quite quickly that it just ain't as easy as it looks! But by the end of the season it was obvious that Mr. Mentzer's words had had some affect as individual scores be- gan going down and swings be- came smoother. With a young team, mainly freshmen and sophomores, it's obvious that we'll be hearing more about them in the near future. Many times they came close to victory only to see one bad inning take it away. But the mark of a true sportsman is his ability to get up after a defeat and try again and the Comets have this sportsmanlike ability. Next year they may eliminate that one bad inning and start on the victory trail. One thing's for sure--they're going to try in a true sportsmanlike way. Lincoln's net- men found themselves up against more seasoned and experienced opponents in almost every match. And since many of the Comets were playing for only their first ox- second years, any win-loss record must be considered in this light. However, the com- ets did gain much experience this year and Coach Tanty hopes that this experience will pay off on the courts next year. The 1960's may have been, as some have called it, the Pushbutton Decade” or the Age of the Machine , but the 1969 Harriers soon found out that the only machine in- volved in their sport was man and that this machine was often pushed to the limits of performance. Because Cross Country is a highly self-disciplined sport the human body must be trained to a point where it ignores pain and fatigue and keeps on ticking those last few tortur- ous yards. Under new head coach, Mr. James Mentzer, the 1969 Harriers worked to achieve this demanding ability. With the experience of three returning lettermen, Dennis Norton, Larry Ward and Eardis Carr and the aggressiveness of first year runners, Jose Lopez and Cornelius Whiteside the team began to move like a well-oiled machine. Although the season was somewhat disappointing in terms of wins and losses, the Comet Roadrunners felt they had each come away with a new attitude toward their own physical capabilities and a resolution to push their human machines” to even greater limits next year. Cross Country 1969 1970 Varsity Basketball Team A successful season is the way Coach Crawford stated it and the statistics would certainly seem to affirm his statement. Although the Comets did not win the championship they cer- tainly proved they were a force to be reckoned with. A record of 15 wins against 5 losses, a tie for second place in the city confer- ence, a narrow overtime loss against Tech in the regionals and countless thrills for the loyal fans proved that the season was a success. Individual honors went to Jimmie Foster who captured the city scoring title and a berth on the All-City Team. But it was a team effort that the Comets put forth in each and every game and it was this kind of effort that may make next year the year that 'The Comets Will Rise Again! Those were the words of Coach Zim- merman as he looked back on a successful season that saw the Lincoln Mermen com- pile a record of five wins and ten losses. It was a season that saw many fine in- dividual efforts and many broken records. Captain Vite Martinez (pictured to the right) and swimmers Jeff Weed, Joe Pap- palardo and Eli Flores were the leading scorers and record-breakers. So, even if it was not a championship season, Coach Zimmerman has good rea- son to be happy and proud. In fact, he has good reason to be even happier in that all of his athletes will be returning next year. With the experience and improvement they have shown this year, next year just could be that Championship Year! Vetran lettermen Robert Waters, Floyd Blakey, Jessie Ward, Van Nance, Larry Lenyard, Willie Kimbrough and Gerald Westmoreland provide the nucle- us for this year's team and are expected to furnish much of the needed punch to put the Comets on top. Coach May stated that the strongest part of the team is the 880 Realy Team consisting of Robert Waters, Floyd Blakey, Gerald Westmoreland and Van Nance. I expect big things from that 880 Relay Team, Coach May comment- ed, They're all very fast and in good shape.
