The 1969 Quill is dedicated to Mr. Andrew Dunar who, after more than twenty one years of service to Lincoln, two of which he served as principal, died on October 10th, 1968. Mr. Dunar was more than just our principal; he was a friend to Lincoln and a seemingly tireless worker in school, community and church affairs. He would take the time to walk through the halls and talk with us, perhaps solving someone's problem on the spot. He was always around with a pat on the back when a job was well done or a warning shake of his finger when it wasn't. His booming voice seem- ed to be heard everywhere, telling us that it behooved” us to act Lincolnian. His absence from the halls of Lincoln is felt strongly. His career was an impressive one. In 1947. after three years service in the Coast Guard, Mr. Dunar joined Lincoln's faculty as a social studies teacher. He also served as assistant track and football coach for sixteen years. In 1959 he was appointed vice- principal of the Junior High and in 1961 vice-principal of the Senior High. In 1966 he succeeded Mr. Dondlingeras principal of the Senior High and Junior High. Mr. Dunar served on the Milwaukee Curriculum Planning Council and was its chairman for one year. He also served for five years on the Milwaukee Social Studies Committee and was its chairman at one time. He was active in functions outside of school also. He was involved in Boy's Club Workat Grace Lutheran Church in Thiensville and served in many capacities in various comminity clubs and organizations. Mr. Dunar did many things to improve Lincoln; such things as the acquisition of textbooks depicting the role of the black man in history, the display of paintings of famous black people, the Martin Luther King writing contest, the partnership with the telephone company, and the Hooked on Books program in the English department are just a few of the improvements that can be attributed to him. Mr. Dunar once said, Lincoln will always be a part of me. We feel that the reverse of that saying can also be applied here: Mr. Dunar will always be a part of Lincoln. . . . I would like to see every pu- pil adopt a program of personal discipline so that they will enjoy success in their adult life. --Andrew Dunar 5
