Lincoln High School Milwaukee, Wisconsin -EX LIBRIS- Welcome! . . .to Quill 69!! Join with us now as the Quill staff takes you on a behind- the-scenes-tour of Lincoln High School. The pace will be fast, the action hectic, and the sights dazzling ... so stick with us, follow the arrows and you won't be disappointed. Let's go. Don't slow down now. There's more ahead! .. . now you're movin'.. . Hang on! Stick with us. . .. . you're doin' fine. 3 Andrew Dunar 1920—1968 t The 1969 Quill is dedicated to Mr. Andrew Dunar who, after more than twenty one years of service to Lincoln, two of which he served as principal, died on October 10th, 1968. Mr. Dunar was more than just our principal; he was a friend to Lincoln and a seemingly tireless worker in school, community and church affairs. He would take the time to walk through the halls and talk with us, perhaps solving someone's problem on the spot. He was always around with a pat on the back when a job was well done or a warning shake of his finger when it wasn't. His booming voice seem- ed to be heard everywhere, telling us that it behooved” us to act Lincolnian. His absence from the halls of Lincoln is felt strongly. His career was an impressive one. In 1947. after three years service in the Coast Guard, Mr. Dunar joined Lincoln's faculty as a social studies teacher. He also served as assistant track and football coach for sixteen years. In 1959 he was appointed vice- principal of the Junior High and in 1961 vice-principal of the Senior High. In 1966 he succeeded Mr. Dondlingeras principal of the Senior High and Junior High. Mr. Dunar served on the Milwaukee Curriculum Planning Council and was its chairman for one year. He also served for five years on the Milwaukee Social Studies Committee and was its chairman at one time. He was active in functions outside of school also. He was involved in Boy's Club Workat Grace Lutheran Church in Thiensville and served in many capacities in various comminity clubs and organizations. Mr. Dunar did many things to improve Lincoln; such things as the acquisition of textbooks depicting the role of the black man in history, the display of paintings of famous black people, the Martin Luther King writing contest, the partnership with the telephone company, and the Hooked on Books program in the English department are just a few of the improvements that can be attributed to him. Mr. Dunar once said, Lincoln will always be a part of me. We feel that the reverse of that saying can also be applied here: Mr. Dunar will always be a part of Lincoln. . . . I would like to see every pu- pil adopt a program of personal discipline so that they will enjoy success in their adult life. --Andrew Dunar 5 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY Administration MR. Oh, I feel better now. . . I have more friends too. . . thanks to Listerine. Candid Comets! Hands off! ! It's all mine ! Try to steal our football will you! Poor Louis. His competition turned out to be the local draft board! Oh, no. This kid needs some Head 'n Shoulders. The Fantastic Four! The In” Group Now. . . where did I put the telephone? I'm Hip! To the now generation. Oh, has anyone seen Wagnall? (You know: Funk and Wagnall). It's really quite simple. You check the white 309 form against the pink 375 form. If the names match you make out a green IBM 72 card. Then you make a triplicate yellow 760 form to go in the stu- dent's brown 333 folder. Then.......... Comet Capers! Ha ! Ha ! You didn't think I could do it, did you? The loudest class in school? Wish they were ! The hugger! Lincoln serves the best food in the state. Prescott will give you the shirt right off his back! Don't hurt baby Charlie ! 102 Comets A-Go-Go! The odd one? No! Guess who's coming to lunch? No! MI don't care what Mr. Wulff says, this is a dumb way to march! Stretch your coffee break. . . . A Bippy? You're asking us what a bippy is? THE NERVE? Shall we dance? Where's everybody going? 103 Epilogue The bell rings and the hallways of Lincoln be- come silent. Another day, another week, another mark period and, fi- nally, another year, has come to an end. The school year 1968-69 was an eventful, dra- matic and some- times tragic year. On a national level we ex- perienced the deaths of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, both struck down by assassins' bullets. On a local level we experienced the loss of our friend and lead- er, Mr. Andrew Dunar. We saw that 1968-69 was a year of protest and, quite often, violence. Yet we also saw that it was a year of achievement and hope. Apollo 8's historic trip to the moon and back stands as a good example. But perhaps the most significant achievement of all is that the human conscience seems to have been awakened. The ugliness of racial prejudice, poverty and war has been ex- posed. It is up to us now to work toward solutions for these proble ms. Life goes on - so must Lincoln. QUILL STAFF 1969 A
