Gilbert 3111 illllvmnrium St1ew gladness on. the paths of men 'You will not pass this way againf' -Sam Walter Foss. Mr. Gilbert himself is gone, but his spirit, his good works pass this way again and again, for Lincoln was his school. He lived for it and for the students, he knew every nook and cranny as well as he knew the palms of his hands, for he helped plan and supervise the building of Lincoln High. He watched when the first stone and the last stone were put in place, and the spirit of all things which he wanted for Lincoln hovers and broods over our daily lives in the classrooms and corridors. Born in Cedarburg in 1878, Mr. Gilbert came to Milwaukee as a young man and took his high school training at East Division High School. In 1897 he was graduated from Milwaukee State Teachers' Col- lege, and in 1919 received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. He continued with his work at the Uni' versity and was given his master of arts degree in 1925. In this same year he was also appointed principal of Lincoln High School. He was a member of the honorary education fraternity, the Phi Delta Kappa, Schoolmaster's Club, and the National Education Assof ciationg he was also the former secretary of the University of Wisf consin W Club. His interests were many and varied-sports, music, literature, science, education, art. Much of the artistic decoration of our school building is owing to Mr. Gilbert's appreciation of the beautiful. He was a good friend. There was never a problem too great or too small for his attention. He always listened. He wa-s never too busy-never too busy for us, for we were Lincoln High School, his school. Mr. K. F. P.: Hur To Lincoln High: This year marked the beginning of a new chap' ter in the history of Lincoln High School. Under the sponsorship of the Board of Education and greatly aided by our late friend, Mr. O. G. Gilbert, the Lincoln Junior High School came into being. We express our appreciation to General Clemens, superintendent in charge of our district, for his untiring efforts in our behalf. The fine boys and girls in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades have conducted themselves splendidly in the past year, and we feel justly proud of them. During this year we have achieved many of the goals set forth by the students and faculty of the junior High. We are looking forward to a new . 1' ' ' T144 ,f' I 4' r. Westhofen H Junior High School Principal year to develop and complete the beginnings made in 194546. The initial success of our LINCOLN LCG, due to the excellent work of the faculty and students, has been most gratifying. The progress of the Student Council and the various clubs or' ganized this year stems from the fine spirit and cooperation of our student body. For us the future holds the assurance of sucf cess in our venture. New horizons-we face them unafraid. In the years to come, wc shall, by work' ing together, be able to realize many more of the goals that still lie before us, and the rewards, though hard won, will be worthy. C. R. Westhofeii. Each year the ambition of the Quill Annual staff is to publish a book more interesting than the one before. During the first semester the staff works collecting material conf cerning clubs, sports, and various outside activities, and prepares this material for the final book. The second semester is devoted to taking pictures of seniors, home rooms, teachers, and clubs. Finally, all the time and effort spent during two semesters is over, and as a result, Lincoln has an annual any school can be proud of. 41 Alden. A.: Derby, C: v 3 Dun, Ply K cl 'mix -. Besides handling many school activities, the council has helped the country in their waste paper and clothing drives. During the past semester, the Council has accomplished much. Because of their work, Lincoln now has a juke box. The student hand book is kept up to date by the work of the Council. When the paper and clothing collections were active, the Student Council helped organize these drives, and also helped Lincoln to meet its war bond quota by putting on a talent show. As the semester drew to a close, the Student Council took on the responsibility of execuf ting the May Ball activities. Many other activities besides the ones mentioned have been promoted by this organization. . . Ruth Kubash OFFICERS Septemberfebruary Pres ...... Steve Ondrejicka V. Pres. Sec. Treas . . The boys of the club earn no money, but work for the satisfacf tion ol' serving their school. The Service Club boy is a boy of excellent charf acter, has a neat appearance, and a high scholastic standing. Each boy must have a recommendation from one of his teachers telling something of his character. The boy then serves three times as 51 tryfout. During this time his manner of serving is observed by the other boys of the club. Then the lad is either voted in or out, the vote being unanimous for or against. Lettermen SEASON'S RECORD Lincoln 3-Washingtori 37 Lincoln's first game against a highly favored Purgold squad, proved to be a real thriller diller, with Tarantino, Miller, Roventini, and Cibik sparkling with defensive power. Rioting caused Coach Fallon to withdraw his squad in the fourth quarter. Lincoln 7-Custer 19 Sharp passing by Don Roventini in the Lincoln' Custer clash warranted the Comet's only touch' down. A recovered fumble and an intercepted pass ended the game with Custer leading by two touchdowns. Lincoln 12-Rufus King 0 Lineoln's first win of the season came with Blackwood passing to Roventini for one touchdown, and Miller running S6 yards for the other. The Comets were credited with excellent running and passing plays. Lincoln 7-North 27 Miller captured the only touchdown in the game against a powerful Northside eleven. Tough luck in the form of a fumble and intercepted passes gave North the remaining two of their touchdowns. Coach Fallon Coach Carroll Lincoln 40-Pulaski O A comforting lead of seven touchdowns was scored hy the Comets against the hewildered Pulaski men. All through the game Pulaski was unquesf tionahly outfclassed. Even the Lincoln second string came through with a marker carried hy Curtis Skenadore. Lincoln OfRiverside 21 The Comets suffered one of the biggest upsets of the season when the Riverside eleven defeated them. It seemed as if every play attempted by the Comets was somehow tripped up by the Orangemen. 65 Wx Row lg 5. licrlc. D, D, Ruth, R. Burtllcci, Musscnncll. T. Pipizl, Cuyu, R. Yoh, L. Varsity Basketball Team This seasons haskcthall lincfup began with the Lincoln' ites hoping to cop the title for the City Conference, or at least the South Side Conference. The horizon quickly darkened, however, and hefore long we were hopelessly heatcn--'hy the W. I. A. A. rules. Even though most of the games were forfeited, the greater perf centagc of us took it with a spirit of goodfsportsmanship. The LincolnfSouth clash was a revengeful game he' cause the Cardinals had heaten the Lincoln Cagers four straight games in the last two years. It was a close game and Lincoln won. The Cardinals protested that the over' time period wasn't fair, and the protest was upheld. After a somewhat desperate struggle with South, the Comets had a pushfover game with Bay View. jimmy Knight led the scoring with fifteen points. Beason was the hero in the LincolnfPulaski overtime game. blames Knights rehound work with Alcanter, Man' cel and Roventinfs fighting spirit made the game another very exciting win for Lincoln. Lincoln's Hrst loss came with a heartbreaking game against Tech. This loss made Lincoln runner-up to Tech, for first place in the South Side Conference. The Pioneers were smothered in the Lincoln-Juneau clash. Alcanter and Knight again were outstanding and each piled up fourteen points to their credit. The second LincolnfBay View game was close hut sue' cessive haskets edged the Comets out to a 5934 win. The Cagers nosed out South Division for the same score, f44f41j made during the first game. The high scoring of Cene lviancel and jake Beason, with the excellent team work of Peter Alcanter, Don Rovcntini and james Knight, gave the Comets the win' ning side of the Lincolngluncau game. The LincolnfTech game was the second actual loss of the Comets to the Trojans after forfeiting seven other victories. Both sides played hard, hut Tech came out on top. Lincoln- . Pulaski Lincoln . Hoch Diplomas i Clayton Hunter Chester Kuzniewski Arthur McGee Lawrence D. Myles Peter Pecoraro William U. Schuh Lawrence Trzebiatowski William Vorvillas Tolerance There stands a house on the edge of town Near a rippling creek where the waters sound Like the drip of rain drops spattering down Through eaves of a roof that are earthward bound. This house is quiet in a calming way While its gentle elms form an arch of green That tremors with the winds and slightly sways Toward the path beneath, it would seem As though they called to each passerby To stop and meditate a while. But he never does and the green boughs sigh This is my house and your house, too. It is for many, not just a few. The door stands open to beckon us in. We hesitate there, longing to flee, But a tiny voice urges us in. We step through the threshold and suddenly see The beauty of the patriot's dream that sees beyond the years The alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human fears. The beams of this house stand on firm foundation Of tolerance and love of one man for another. We live as a unit in just federation Where each man does to him as he to his brother, The American creed, As one, for another. This is my house and your house too. Always for many, not just a few. 93 25,5 'a.
