Qlltlill 1931 English Eepartmrnt The old picture of the bored school- boy who finds his classes unutterably dull and lifeless will rarely be found when he is traveling blithely down Eng- land's brightest roads of song and story. He hears the jangling of spurs, the bus- tle at the inn, and the cries of the post- boy, as the loved characters in bookland take the coach down literary way through the streets of London town, to Sherwood forest, and from thence to hear the rhyme of the Shropshire Lad. He tar- ries a while with the Bard of Avon, he follows the road of the coach with Black- more to the land of the Doones, and he picks heather in Sussex with Clem Yeo- bright. He rolls along the great high way to Buckingham and Kent, and stops for a space with the Earl of Huntingdon. He journeys up, down, and around Eng- land with some of the most famed and jolly traveling companions of all time - the members of the Pickwick Club. They are jolly good companions all and have at their fingers' ends a large fund of fact and merry quip. There is Tony Weller, who drives the coach, and his irrepressi- ble son Sam who spells his last name with a we. There is the beau ideal, Tracy Tupman, and then there is the widow Bardell. To travel with Samuel Pickwick, Esquire, and to share some of the vicissi- tudes of the road with his fellow club members is a privilege unparalleled. Our schoolboy lives with these many friends and learns to speak their language-the King's English. Without one the other would be useless and progress would be impossible. During the last one hun- dred years science gave us many great inventions and conveniences without which we would be lost. Science receives most of the credit for these advances, but were it not for mathematics, we would still be waiting for the automo- bile, radio, and other things. Professor Maxwell, a mathematical-physicist, de- veloped the theory of radio and proved its possibility fifty years before Professor Hertz verified the theory in the labora- tory and actually produced radio waves. Many such examples may be cited to show the dependence of one of these subjects upon the other. The ability to interpret the graph which frequently appears in the newspapers and magazines enables the student to grasp a situation at a glance. Thus may mathe- matics be used in business and profes- sional life. The aim of the science course is to teach students to think logically, to form correct conclusions about certain funda- mental principles selected from scientific data. In this age of rapid scientific de- velopment, a wealth of knowledge is daily added to our lives. Our homes are lighted and furnished with conveniences-va- cuum cleaners, telephones, and radios- for the scientist has learned to achieve greater miracles than he ever dreamed of, by adapting scientific theories to the aid of humanity. I16l 1931 QED! QDLIHI 1931 Glnmmrrrial Bepartmrnt It is often stated that modern business is of such a complex nature that the in- dividual loses his identity and becomes a mere cog in the wheel. This is true, to a certain extent, because of the divi- sion of labor. Individuals spend their time at one minute part of the whole process. The tendency to reduce the individu- ality of the worker may be overcome by the efforts and native ability of the worker. This is where the commercial training steps in and helps the individual. Com- mercial Education may be of two types, first that which applies to one particular branch of business and second, that which applies generally, to all branches of business. The business man in large affairs re- quires keen observation, a quick mental grasp of new subjects, and a wide range of knowledge. Whence come these powers and attainments-either to the educated or to the uneducated-save through practice and study? The ob- ject of all good education is to develop just these powers- accuracy in observa- tion, quickness and certainty in seizing upon the main points of a new subject, and discrimination in separating the tri- vial from the important in great masses of facts. . . Is not active business a field in which mental power finds full play? Again, education imparts knowledge, and who has greater need to know economics, history, and natural science than the man of large business ? The department endeavors to give the student this enlarged scope of informa- tion by aiming to develop his initiative, reliability, and business eiliciency. l17l YHCD y ,,,s,v,,AxV x, 5, 1931 TID! Sllllill 1931 iilllnhern llfmnguagv Bepartment A knowledge of the foreign languages has many advantages. Aside from the actual service it may give in the terms of dollars and cents, it has the highest type of cultural value. 1 I 4 I , Americans, it is often said, are self- , s a t i s f i e d individuals, not thoroughly grounded in their mother tongue, and 1 with a rather superior attitude toward the 1 it ideas and ideals of their foreign neigh- ,' lb bors, of whom they know little. Qllllill 1931 Uhr liiztnrg Erpariment As a student studies civics he begins to realize the importance of good citizenship as an essential factor in the maintaining of a strong, intelligent government. His- tory gives the student understanding of the trend of events, past and present, and the ability to correlate the present with the past. Ancient and Medieval history in itself is glorious for, gor- geous in our sight shall rise the splen- dor of dead cities, and then might of elder empires of which the very ruins crumbled to dust ages ago. Along an- cient trade routes across the wor1d's waste spaces, the caravans shall move, and the admirals of uncharted seas shall furrow the oceans with their prows. Be- yond the dim centuries we shall see the banners float above armed hosts. We shall see conquerors riding forth to vic- tories that have changed the course of time. We shall listen to the prophecies of forgotten seers. History supplies the necessary back- ground for an appreciation of much that is best in literature and art. It gives more interest to travel. It develops fair- mindedness by showing how loyal citi- zens have honestly diiiered on public questions. At the same time, it stimu- lates an intelligent patriotism by famili- arizing young people with the history of their own country and its place in the world. U91 CAMEE VETNOMSDN ERNEST' PHIL-LIP 01.34 POF QI-IVER WYSRGW LAURA B-NLC fha A 9 K. I r i W 1931 WD! QDLIHI 1931 Fllinr-Applivh Ariz Evpartment One might say that the purpose in a study of manual arts is mental training through the hand and eye. Mechanical drawing which is taught in connection with all shop work, develops the power of space thinking-the power of visualiza- tion. Physical training has for its aim the de- velopment of youth into fine men and women, thus stoutly maintaining the old Greek belief of a sound mind in a sound body. It is becoming universally recognized that education in music fundamentals is an improtant part of our school processes - That person who has learned to appre- ciate good music and good singing-who can listen to the compositions of the great masters of music, and feel his soul thrilled to its depths by the emotions which these composers have put into their work-has gained something in this life which no other power but music can give. Art is neither an industry nor a prod- uct, it is a mystery, a manifestation, and a result. Through it alone we come face to face with the spiritual output of the racial soul, through it is revealed all that endures in civilizartion. We claim for it, therefore, a co-ordinate position with all other branches of learning, as in- dispensable in a complete curriculum, and he who is not learned therein, either in its active or its passive aspect, is to that extent ignorant, unlearned, uncul- tured. 1201 1931 'Ghz 9Du1Il 1931 Ahminiztratinn While class rooms are the vital ele- ments of every school, the office is im- portant in many and various ways, and this importance is proportional to the number of class room units. The office is responsible for the accuracy and safe- keeping of pupil, teacher, and school rec- ords of all kinds, and the policies of the school are centered there. The principal, the vice-principal, the teacher assistants of the principal, the clerks, the welfare officers, the visiting teacher, the doctor, and the nurse are in control of the organ- ization, the attendance, the discipline, the records, the health, and many other func- tions of modern school. The library attends to the wants of pupils and teachers whenever informa- tion and material other than that which are supplied by teachers and text are desired. It supplies not only supplemen- tary and reference material, but its equip- ment includes newspapers, magazines, charts, and a store if visual aids. The library reaches out beyond the building to secure materials and aids not contained within its own walls. It is eager to serve those who are eager to learn. Francis Bacon says about books and their meaning: Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested, that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man. l21l 1931 Uhr QDuiII 1931 ARNOLD LENZ , 3 1 l l' S, t :T . Ti 'ag 5 , 1 if L. fi I Y , is 4 , I S W w ,A .Uuniur Brpartment It is the duty of the junior high schools to prepare students for life in a demo- cracy by reproducing within themselves life situations. The curriculum of the institution is enriched by the broadening of the so-called common branches so as to make them contribute more largely to cultural, social, vocational, and explora- tory ends. The pupils gain the incentive to do well by seeing children of their own age take part in the interesting activities made possible in our modern well-equipped buildings. The personnel of the classes is inter- esting to note. We draw students from so many nationalities that it is a mighty problem and an interesting one, to build a foundation of American ideals and cul- ture in those very young people who com- prise our junior high school classes. In our small citizenry we attempt to lay the basis for character and habits which will make them a little better prepared to go on with high school life and curri- culum, or to meet the problems of indus- try, if they do not pursue academic paths. The little seventh and eighth grader is sometimes overawed by his high school elders. He cringes in the corner to which the upper classmen have relegated him. The sophomore assumes a look of great dignity as he waits his turn. The junior tries to look important but wishes he could unbend somewhat. Last of all, from his enviable elevation the lordly senior designs to smile on the new Lin- colnite. After a time, however, Junior Lincoln is himself again, and gets his education unmindful of his scholarly bet- ters. l22l If A . xxx Q s R Q S b 5 -Q Q Q Q 1 In S I I' nn Zo f Swninrz Th e Passengcm riding in this gap Coach, The end of Hu Journey now Ap proach, ,454-1-. nr-ff --. -. .1 444 -xr., rv- ' 'Y 5 . The years have passed - four in all Have passed in work and play in these new halls- But still you live, Old Lincoln, to shout encore, To lead us on to do and give galore, Service to all, friends old and new All that, dear Lincoln is what we owe to you. I had to work somc, And I also had fun, But boy, I'm glad that it's done To think of three marks, And the many check-tests. To go home and study till dawn. It sure was a grind, But I shou1dn't mind, Because I soon will be done. To come in the morning, And listen to talks By some one who knows less than I. But I have lived through it By a good stroke of luck, But if it deserts me, I'l1 die. For the moral of school Is to keep calm and cool, And let the teachers believe you're a sponge Absorbing their knowledge Enjoying their jokes 'Tis best 'till you take the big plunge. i701 Artinitim The Laughfer am! We knew that when the coachman pulled up the horses and the postboy threw open the doors of the Lincoln coach, we wanted the crowd of bystand- ers to marvel at our passengers. Among our good companions of the road we included a group of skilled athletes. We can say now after the long trip, as we comfortably sit before the tire at Lincoln's Inn, It has fallen to the lot of few men to have ever had the pleasure and as- surance of the good fellow- ship, and good cheer that has always been part of Lincoln's team of sportsmen. 1931 'ZIID2 mail! 1931 'Ye gl Uhr Eiumiihe tEamr Lincoln met its first defeat within two years, but not with- out a battle. Both teams were on the defensive and showed fighting spirit. It was perhaps Riverside's chance to reap revenge for the previous year's loss. Rynn ran twenty yards for the iirst touchdown. Captain Fallon kicked oil' for Lincoln at the beginning of the second half and the ball finally rested on Lincoln's thirty-five yard line. From this point Riverside scored her second touchdown. In the last quarter, Lincoln completed many passes for long gains, but the game ended be- fore the team had a chance to score. CURRO We look to him to captain his men well on next year's coaching trip. HUMPHRIES Always in the center of things, he kept his weather eye peeled for any surprise attacks. It was a wonderful game and although the score was seven to six in favor of Bay View, Lincolnites were satisfied at the excellent maneuvering of the team. For Bay View, Kayser went through center for a. touchdown and Miller made the extra point on a line plunge. For Lincoln, Vlasis carried the ball for the sole touchdown and the pass for the extra point was incom- plete. l93l TILE!! QDLIHI 1931 Uhr North Game Lincoln rallied to win this game by a score of thirteen to nothing. The game gave Wefel of North and Fallon of Lincoln an opportunity for an excellent showing in a punting duel. Burns, Vlasis, Lynch and Cur- ro did exceptional work. A series of end runs and line bucking gained two first downs and placed the ball on North's ten yard line. On a reverse play, Burns went over for a touchdown. Vlasis' attempt for the extra point failed. In the fourth quarter, F a 1 l o n went over for the second touchdown. A pass from Vlasis to Fallon was good for the extra point. Lin- coln was on West's five yard line as the game ended. This unexpected victory over West by a six to nothing score gave Lincoln the most glorious homecoming parade seen for many years. Roy Cohen, as spokesman for the bunch of Lincoln alumni in the bus, had decided to please Mickey Georgiady and Ruth Miller and find out for them just how much longer they would have to wait before their next opportunity came to stretch their legs. He hardly expected the answer Pasquale Coraggio, the driver of the bus, gave him. That's just what I can't figure out, he said. We were sure it was only twenty-one miles to Stratford, but we've gone thirty-six already and I don't know where we are now. We must have taken the wrong road somewhere, He had hardly finished speaking when a sudden flash of lightning dimly revealed the huge outline of a house, which they would certainly have passed had it not been for the unexpected illumination. A hotel, at last, sighed Rose Gendelman, and emerged hopefully into the storm. Hey, come back here, shouted Ray, but Rose, as was her wont, kept' right on going. Then, following Rose's example, the other Lincolnites stepped daintily forth, and charged the hostelry. It was a stout door, and refused to open or break. After some minutes of rythmic hammering, the house was flooded with lights, and a head was poked bravely out of the window. Hey, shouted Franklin Boruszak, come down here and open up. We're soaked. I don't open up for soaks, boomed the stentorian tones of Ted Weingarten. Ted Weingartenf' chorused the hardy travelers. C'mon Ted, open the door, begged Grace DeSham. You know me-you know us. Lincolnites! yelled Ted, and bounced down the stairs with as much speed as his portly frame would allow, to open the door. His cook, Louis Chrisien, awakened by the noise, met him at the foot of the stairs. Together they unbarred the door, and were deluged by rain and the Lincoln travelers. Mine friends, shouted Louie, fcndly embracing James Fallon tirst, and then prog- ressing down the line, I know you're hungry. Come, I get for you de best sopper. Ve haf sauer krout, vieners, and pickled pig's feet-de best vat gifs it. Well, sighed Franklin a half hour later, as all the travelers assembled before a crackling fire in the Lincoln Tavern fsuch was the name of the Hotel . Coincidence?l We can't leave until morning, and since they haven't enough beds in this place to go around, we'll have to sit up all night. I'll have to see the chief of police about this. In the meantime what shall we do to keep awake all night? ' Let's tell jokes, mumbled Jimmy between bites of a weiner. Wait till I finish this pig's foot, and I'll tell you a good story about Howard Burns, offered Roy Cohen swallowing the last knuckle, I brought my harp along, meekly ventured Al Conte. At these inoifensive words, a large shout echoed and re-echoed in the old tavern. Always prepared. Did you think St. Peter might make you go to harp dances? questioned Jimmy. Oh, do play for us, invited Mickey. I1041 1931 .. TID! QDIIHI .. 1931 After his solo, nobly attempted, the company decided against Heaven-under any circumstances. But Roy Cohen was going to tell. us a story, Franklin reminded his companions. So I was, beamed Roy. Let me see-one night after Howard Burns finished his English exam, a policeman 1- Nothing doing, a chorus of protests rose. We read that one in the Quill a long time ago. 'lMaybe I know a better one, continued Roy, nothing daunted. Once, Howard Burns was walking down Wisconsin Avenue chewing a stick of lickerish. A lady walking just ahead of him dropped her purse. Howard dashed forward to pick it up, and when the lady looked at him to thank him, she fainted. Howard was going to stop to ask ques- tions, but a squadron of policemen made him change his mind. Howard continued on his way until another lady dropped her purse. This time instead of picking up the purse, Howard shoved everybody oil' the sidewalk and began running up Third Street Stop--. Say, that's part of a story I was going to tell about Harold Schroeder and Osbee Sampson , Tony Balistreri interrupted. Last summer Osbee Sampson and Harold Schroeder were walking down Third Street when they met Howard Burns sprinting merrily along. Howard yelled 'Inter Se parade coming up tl1e street', and Harold made for the nearest doorway. Osbee gave chase, and soon he and Harold were playing tag up and down the corridors of the Schroeder Hotel. On the thirteenth Hoof, Osbee, tired of run- ning up and down stairs, sat down on the top step to wait for Harold. After an hour and a half, Osbee heard much struggling and groaning down the hall. Rousing himself, he turned around to see Harold in the custody of the two house detectives, Bill Jones and Dick Bellinghausen. Dick had a blue eye, and the usual part in Bill Jcnes' hair had shifted sides. But Jimmy Fallon knows the rest of the story. I can't remember the finish, said Jimmy Fallon, but I know some of the story. Bill Jones and Dick Bellinghausen used to run a. pawn shop, but they had so much stolen goods on their hands all the time that they decided to go into the detcetive business. Well, Dick and Bill had only been in the Schroeder a week before Harold turned up on the transom of room 1313. He couldn't explain how he got there except that he thought he owned the Hotel Csame names you knowj and ought to be allowed to do his daily dozen swinging from the transom or even the lobby chandelier if he felt like it. Harold gave fight when captured, and had to be given a stick of candy, and a punch in the nose to keep him quiet. Dick's eye, by the way, isn't normal yet, and Bill Jones' hair not being able to decide on the part, stands up on end. Well, Dorothy Gardner happened to be outside the hotel when all this happened and -- Let me tell that one, said Franklin. Dot Gardner was waiting for Vera to come along from the delicatessen one day, and Vera, happening to run into a street car with a Ford she had just learned to drive, took two hours to explain to the judge why she thought she ought to be able to pass a street car on the left. Dot got tired of waiting, and decided to eat at the Schroeder. She found two pearls in her oyster stew and was tripping out to tell the chief of police, when she met Lester Posner stepping out of his Rolls Royce. Lester began singing Oh Tell me Pretty maiden. Dorothy was so surprised that she opened her mouth, and the pearls fell out. Lester and Dot began chasing the cunning things down the street with Lester's chauffeur driving the Rolls madly after them tooting his siren until it broke. Carl Lehman happened along about then 1' Yes, and that's my story, said Grace De Sham. Carl Lehman, you know, owns a diamond mine in South Africa, and spends his vacations in Milwaukee. He had met 11051 1931 .. 'UIDK Slltlill .. 1931 Emily and Betty Mosey strolling up and down in front of the Boston Store advertising beach pajamas, when to the utter consternation of them all, came Ruth Roethe and Sophia Rempelos, escorted by a squad of motorcycle policemen. Sophia is known as the girl with the million dollar voice, and so there's always someone trying to steal it. Ergo the cops. Ruth travels with Sophia wherever they go. Well, this whole crowd of Lincolnites boarded Dot Gardner's old Elizabeth one day and rode out to Saukville, Wisconsin. They intended to hike, but at Saukville they if I know more about that than you do, broke in Ruth Paetow, I was there. We all went to Saukville, and dragged the Fire Chief away from his dinner to play baseball with us. We won fifteen out of fifteen games. Just when things were ready for a good iight, Emily yelled, 'Fire !' and the Saukvillians Qthe villiansl had to go to the tire. We lost a lot of money that day, but then how were we to know that --' Never mind the money you lost, remarked Roy, having been asleep all the while. Did you ever play bridge with Emily ? No? Well, don't. I'm warning you. Well, did you ever play tag with Al Burns? questioned Jimmy Fallon. Try it sometime. He climbs trees, Hag poles, and buildings. Once we couldn't find him until Edward Wisniewski happened to look up on the roof of a house across the street from school, and there was Al, sitting in the chimney. Which reminds me, said Mickey, did you ever hear that story about Lucille Chris- tensen and Marjorie Adam? Well, cnce they bought a Ford and tried it out on a couple of bumpy roads. One of the bumps jumped out and bit the old gas tank. The gasoline spurted out along the road until the car come to a sudden stop. A heated argument began. Neither of the girls could decide which was to tramp to a garage and which was to stay and mind the car. Finally they both went. .When they came back with six garage men and a wrecking truck, the car was gone. They still, on a winter evening, when they want excitement, try to solve the mystery. It's just like a Sherlock Holmes story only not so mysterious. Speaking of Sherlock Holmes reminds me that Al Kuszewski and Marie Johnson were writing a mystery story-that is until the mystery burned up. began Franklin. Al was writing the story and Marie was typing it. Jerome Szczpanski used the manu- script for a cigar lighter one day, though, and that was the end of the mystery. Al is trailing Jerome these days with a scalping knife. The last we heard of them, A1 had bought the Mexican army and Jerome had departed to penetrate the wilds of Central Africa, As Franklin finished speaking there was a thundering roar, a Hash of lightning, and the party in Lincoln Tavern woke up. To their astonishment, they discovered they had been fast asleep in one corner of Coach Carroll's sixth hour study hall. noel B 2-Xhuvrtining 1931 TED!
