The stream meets and surpasses larger ob- stacles each day as it grows in force, size, and importance. This stream of life flows in Lincoln, each student is a part of it, growing with each contribution, experience, and activity. From the faculty, students gain knowledge, from experiences of others, they profit. Students encounter and overcome the problems of life daily, through student activities and by mingling with and growing alongside others, they add their contribution to the vast sea of talent. Like tall trees near a stream, stand the accomplish- ments of the people in Lincoln High School. 2 - sw z M Men ma it x ome and men may go, buf I go W. F W M .f . Lincoln's elever The Lincoln Lions, after completing a success- ful 7-2 record in '56, started the '57 season with an impressive showing against McKinley and Timken in the preview. Against McKinley, the Lions held the Pups to a scoreless deadlock but were able to move the ball with authority. Their arch-rival Timken was quite stubborn, so the Lions had to settle for another scoreless tie. The Lions controlled the ball for seven of the eight minutes played against Timken. The Lincoln Lions opened the regular season with a hard-fought victory over Cuyahoga Falls 14-7. With iust two minutes remaining in the game, Jerry Lyke crashed over from the three to cap a 60 yard drive, sparked by the fine run- ning of Art De Orio and Tom Dinkins. Both teams played on even terms through most of the encounter. Before 11,000 fans, the Lions went down to their first defeat 'I9-O at the hands of the Massillon Tigers. The Lions should be commend- ed for their fine oFfensive play. Lincoln was in- side MassilIon's ten yard line on four different occasions but couldn't find the power play to go the rest of the way. The explosive running of halfback lvory Beniamin added to Lincoln's woes. On the happy side, the Lions ended their grid relations with Lehman by trimming the Bears 35-7. Speed was our main offensive threat as Lyke, De Orio, and Saimes broke loose for many long runs. Lyke and Saimes scored two touchdowns each and Van Benthuy- sen scored the other as Dinkins added the extra points. 'DNN J. Lyke leaps high into the air to make a finger- tip catch as N. Lincoln held a halftime lead of 7-6 as Dinkins threw to De Orio for a touchdown with iust 'I6 seconds remaining until halftime. The second half proved to be the same old tale as McKinley scored three times to climax the game. Chalking up their third win against two set- backs, the Lions downed a determined Canton A Canton South player is snowed under by four lincoln gridders. South Wildcat team 39-18. Lincoln completely dominated the first half of play by quickly scoring four touchdowns to lead 26-0 at halt- time. Jerry Lyke and Art De Orio again proved to be the opponent's headache as they scored two touchdowns each. Dinkins and Saimes each tallied a touchdown as the four backfield men led the charge. ln the second half, the Lincoln reserves saw most of the action as Lincoln ended their grid relations with South. The ball is free for the first of these two players who grabs it. if . 1 E 'P i J. Lyke scatter: the McKinley players before he is brought down. Playing at New Philadelphia, the Lincoln Lions showed the rainsoaked crowd, that the defensive unit was just as important as the offensive unit. The defense put on three tre- mendous goal line stands which proves the Lions had a good defensive team. Lyke and Saimes scored the only Lions' touchdowns to beat New Philadelphia, 12-7 for their fourth victory. The Lions compiled 227 yards with 13 first downs. The flu-ridden Lions went down to their third defeat at the hands of the Central Catholic Crusaders 12-6. Lincoln led at the halftime 6-0 on a pass from Dinkins to De Orio in the end zone. Central Catholic roared back in the R. Van Benthuysen figh's through for awother first down. second half to take the lead 12-6 to win a very close game. Lincoln, playing one of their best games of the season, lost a heartbreaking 13-12 decision to a much favored Alliance team. Both teams scored once in the second quarter to knot it 6-6 at the end of the first half. In the fourth quarter, the Lions were in Alliance's territory on three occasions but were unable to find the one play to take the lead. Jerry Lyke and Tom Dinkins scored a touchdown each for the Lions' score. Playing their last game for Lincoln High were thirteen senior lettermen who helped defeat Timken 21-0. This completed a victorious cam- paign with a respectable 5-4 record. Grinstead and J. Elmes are arranging articles for the last time. Behind the skilled playing by the boys on the gridiron, stands the work of the coaches and managers. This year's five man staff coached the varsity, reserve, and freshman teams to respectable seasons. The efforts of these men to build boys, who represent Lincoln well, were not in vain. Connecting the coaches and the man- agers in their efforts is the faculty man- ager, Mr. Forrest. Managers take on the job of bearing responsibility for all the needed equip- ment. During the long weeks of practice, these five boys distributed clean suits and helmets only to get back mud covered equipment. The enthusiasm of both groups is es- sential if our Lions are to be victorious. A team is needed and these groups pitch in to make a fine team. The Lions, as a team, just missed passing the season's oftensive total of l,l72 points by a defiency of two points. 35 Lincoln's bes' The Lincoln Lions started off the T957- 58 basketball season by defeating Louisville. Lincoln's height and shooting ability proved to be too much for the Leopards as Gary Daniels led the way with 34 points. The first away game showed the Lions were as good on the road as they were on their home court by beating Sebring. Dick Teel set an individual scoring re- cord as he meshed 37 points. Picking up their third victory in as many games over Orange, Lincoln then met their first intracity team, Timken. The Troians proved to be a good team, but not tough enough for the Lions as they rolled to a 63-47 win. Minerva and Dover were easy games for the Lions as they continued on their winning way. Two more records were set as Gary Daniels ended the season with a total of 336 points and Dick Teel ended with the best average in Lincoln history, 19.5. Larry Gribble, Gary Daniels, and Dick Teel did most of the scoring and re- bounding for the Lions, but George Saimes and Rip Van Benthuysen are not to be forgotten. Their ability to play well in the back court made the season a team effort. The Lincoln Lions set another record as they trampled Oberlin for their seventh straight win. This broke the old mark of six set last year. Playing one of their better games of the season, the Lions completely out- classed the Central Crusaders 74-37 as they added another consecutive win. Their shooting was terrific as they hit on 41 per cent. The McKinley Bulldogs turned the trick as it ended Lincoln's victory streak. After leading 7-0, the Lions didn't play good ball. They made costly mistakes which proved fatal. Lincoln got back on the win trail by defeating Barberton, and then fought hard to turn back Canton South. Lincoln led by 15 points at half, but the Wild- cats came back to cut the lead to 3 points as the final buzzer rang. After a close first half, Lincoln poured it on in the third and fourth periods at Alliance to win 51-31. This game ended athletic relations between the two schools. Akron Kenmore was easy prey for the Lions as they emerged victorious for their twelfth victory in 13 starts. Coaches and managers Our basketball team was compos- ed of more people than the five play- ers on the floor, and the ones ready on the bench. The coaches and man- agers played an important part in winning games. The coaches used their time and experience to develop our Lions into a team which broke tive records this year. The coaching staff is assisted by managers who are close by to help when needed. These boys take care of suits, ierseys, and balls during practices and at games throughout the year. Lincoln has good reason to be proud of its instru- mental music department. Besides the marching band there are the pep band, the orchestra, and symphonic band. The man behind -all this is our capable band director, Mr. A. J. Bayless. Few people realize the many long hours of hard work the band members put in - not only during the school year but also during summer months - in order that we might enioy halftime shows at the football games, pep music at assemblies and basketball games, and the annual band concert. A lot of credit goes, also, to the Band Parents Organi- zation. This organization charters buses so that the band can go to out-of-town games and is the sponsor of the annual Military Ball. 55 . Library Stal? - Organized for the purpose of helping students to use the library to its fullest extent, the Library Staff is made up of girls interested in learning more about the procedures in a library. Their many duties include carding and shelving books, checking overdue notices, and distributing the attendance slips to study halls. They also process new books, mend books and magazines, and take care of the mail. This year, through the work of a committee of Library Staff members, colorful displays have been placed on the library bulletin boards announcing new books and other items of interest. b,,.......................N---.s---..-.............. -,.................,.. Three of the Freshman class officers, Gloria Kirkbride, vice-president, Put Leas, secretary: and Dianne Winkler, treasurer seem to be taking advantage of their male minority as they prepare to throw snowballs at their president, Phil Billings. Proving our ability to pick leaders, we chose as our officers for our first year: Phil Billings, president, Gloria Kirkbride, vice-president, Pat l.eas, secre- tary, and Dianne Winkler, treasurer. ln spite of being confused by crowded halls, meeting new teachers, and making new friends, we showed a keen interest in extra-curricular activities. Topping this list was our class party, where we had a wonderful time, became better acquainted, and acquired, even more, the feeling of belonging to Lincoln. We tried to participate in both the schoolroom and outside activities and to make a good name for ourselves as Freshmen of Lincoln High School. We know that our eager anticipation of tomorrow has made us the avid students of today. 92 Donald Ackerman Louise Addlesburger Ronald Allen Vicki Allen Linda Alspaugh Steve Alspaugh Patricia Aman Jonathan Anderson Todd Anderson Mary Arbogast Alvina Arena Judith Arnett Gary Atchison Joseph Baker Gary Banta Ronald Barnett Fred Barr Gilbert Bartholomew Mike Batch Thomas Baumker David Becker Don Beckler Jo Ann Bohm Robert Bender Terry Bentivegna Ronald Bergmeyer Michael Bernard Theodore Bernhard Ronald Bethel linda Bifolchi Karen Bigler Saundra Bigler Phillip Billings Robert Bober Karen Boldt Daryl Bollinger Donnette Bope Tom Borden Cheryl Berdner Dino Borello Reif Bragg Nancy Brannon Sharron Bricker Nancy Brill Pamela Brislen Roger Brooks William Brooks Janice Buchanan Sally Buda Dan Budrow Eugene Bucklin Tom Buehler Ronald Bugh Jerry Bunyan Dorothy Burch Gary Bush Jim Caldwell Charles Calhoun Kim Calla Mary Camarata Ruth Campbell James Canter Frank Caplan Denise Caron Connie Carr Richard Carnelius Frank Carter Katherine Carvour James Casselberry Sharon Casto Brenda Chaboude Martha Chaney William Chismar Michael Christian linda Christy Roger Clark Lance Clarke Janet Class Janet Clauss Alice Clayton Charles Cook Evelyn Cooper Betty Cornelius Carol Cornelius Sharon Costello Linda Crawl James Crowley Joseph Dalphra Ruth Ann Daugherty Paul Daniels Gerald Davidson Ernest Davis Frank Dawson Elaine Dayton Michael De Stefano Robert Di Giacomo Patricia Di Mario Joseph Di Simone Carolyn Dodd Glen Doxsee Nick Dragomire Louise Dureska ? ,, K N es Q K4 Y F if J' ff I .f A fn . We have found our place here at Lincoln, we know what our failures have been, what we have triumphed in, and what we are capable of doing in the future. Our first year taught us many things from which we can now benefit to become better students of Lincoln High School. We chose to lead us through our second year of school: Nick Zazula, president, John Dickerson, vice-president, Nancy Krumm, secretary, and Linda Johnston, treasurer. Having become better acquainted with the ways of Lincoln and its students, we enjoyed even more the social events of the year, our biggest one being the Sophomore class party, where we had wonderful refreshments and a great variety of good entertainment. 102 8 Q Xi ENN NN - .. On several occasions during the year the Junior class had get-togethers, one being our class party, the Satelite Swirl , which was really out of this world. However, the formal Junior-Senior Prom, at which we entertained the Seniors and Faculty, remains the most prominent in our minds as the most outstanding party of the year. Now we are looking forward to our Senior year at Lincoln with assur- ance and anticipation. As members of the Junior class, we have certainly accomplished much in our three years at Lincoln. Many of us have contributed our skills and talents to Band, A Capella, sports and clubs. Fully prepared to take the reins of leadership throughout the year were: George Saimes, president, Jerry Lyke, vice-president, Jeanne Wilson, secretary, and Veronica Sima, treasurer. 110 ,., hx X.. Huff, enioy an evening of dancing at the senior party. Much water has passed under the bridge since the 1958 graduating class entered Lincoln High School as freshmen four years ago. The election of our class officers was our first look at democratic voting, and we proved that we recognized leaders when we saw them by electing Ted Felton, president, Gayle Harter, vice-president, Linda Chismar, secretary, and Bob Williams, treasurer. The class party, February Fantasy , was a huge success. We had made our first step forward. Our summer vacation was soon over, and we traded our bathing suits and tennis rackets for geometry and biology books. By this time our sophomore boys were playing on the basketball and football teams, and the girls were leading cheers and becoming prominent in clubs. To lead our sophomore class we chose: Linda Chismar, president, Treva Kines, vice- president, Joyce Wolcott, secretary, and Tarry Taylor, treasurer. The Sea Bottom Bounce made a big splash with all of us. Our sophomore years was over! As iuniors we realized that we were really becoming a lasting part of Lincoln High. The boys were once again participating in the maior sports, and the girls were doing their best at the Army-Navy game. Band and choir were heading the list of extra-curricular activities, and the Military Ball was something that would not soon be forgotten. We had at last crossed the bridge of adolesence and were beginning to take responsibility and duties in our stride. Leading our iunior class were: Darryl Grinstead, president, Wanda Sherlock, vice-president, Peter Tkocz, secretary, and Patsy Stephens, treasurer. Tropical seas and palm trees accented the theme of our party, Hawaiian Holiday . The gala event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom, certainly left nothing to be desired in the minds of the juniors. 118 Q... Rabert Ackerman - Technical - Orchestra I: Chorus II: Choir III 8. GOOD LUCK SUCCESS HAPPINESS The Lincoln High School Band And Orchestra Parents Club 155 Squawk Box You can squawk all you want about how your government is being run. You can squawk to your family, your neighbors, the boys at the shop, or your barber-anyone who'll listen. Or you can praise your government. But your squawks and praise won't pay off unless you deposit them in the ballot box. The right to a secret ballot gives you an actual voice in your government. By casting your ballot at election time, you can help decide who is going to run the show. It's not like this in every country. Behind the Iron Curtain there's a lot to squawk about. But people have to keep it to themselves. If you com- plain out loud, you may get a one-way ticket to Siberia. At election time you may get a ballot, but there'll only be one person to vote for. But in America you can choose. And choosing means that you've got to do some serious thinking to make sure you vote for the right man. The secret ballot is a right you don't exercise every day. But the fact that elections are not daily occurences makes the right all the more important. And the guy who fails to vote has lost the right to squawk. Think it over-and then make sure you vote. It's your rightg so treat it right. TRADE-MARK REG. U. S. PAT. OFF. The Timken Roller Bearing Company The right to work shall not be abridged nor made impotent ard of living in the world.
