High school is one of the most important crossroads in life. During four years our activities and life center in and around Lincoln High School. lt is here that we choose the path- way that we will follow the rest of our lives. The academic, the athletic, the soc- ial, the happy, the sad, the crowded, and the lonely hours, all are a part of our school life. Although the students journey from different localities they meet on the cross- road of high school. lt is here that the character of our future leaders is molded. As we leave Lincoln many of us will further our education toward a permanent path in life while others of us will begin our careers in the field of business or industry. The paths that we are destined to follow have many by-paths and cross- roads. We turn from the home, . . . to school, . . . to industry. Don and Joyce Vogelsang leave home for another busy day ut school. Dave, Lindo, and Lew Wetzel enioy an afternoon at home fo- gether. 3 -A .3N: ,, ,Vw 1?-f :FE .,, 331 V555 Lf' W,-' 'efwnfx - ,fd , 3 A z ya! 2525 eg Q I 1 I F? ALMA MATER Alma Mater, Lincoln High School, Hail to thee, maroon and gold. ' We will cherish thee and laud thee As thy glories oft are told. We will cheer thee and revere thee As we sing thy praises o'er Alma Mater, Lincoln High School We will sing thy praise once more. 5 Rushing from class to class is part of a typical school day V. Jones, S. Snyder, K. Hahn, and J. Koehler are prepared to continue on the path to industry. The electric furnace is an essential part of the steel industry. Our local factories supply the needs of people throughout the world. 6 Scenes such as this one of our ndusiry are familiar io Conlon 'esidenfs. Canton, ihe city of diversified ndusiries, offers many opportuni- ries to its inhabitants. Our Canton parkways bring us beauty and recreation. In the summer we wander along these paths toward a secluded spot for a quiet picnic. Here, in the winter we come to ice skate, ski, or gn sledding. 8 The long walk up this hill represents the path of life. As hugh school students we have our place in this pathway. One of the happier paths of life led to and through school. Every moment of our four years at Lincoln High School seemed full. Hard work, fun, friends, and activities were the things that helped to make our high school days those we shall not forget as we head toward the path of success. Friends, fun, and activity go together on the same by-path. As we had fun participating in extra activities, we made friendships that will last forever. The hardest by-path was working at our chosen studies, but as we came toward the end we saw ahead of us a broadening, wider path resulting from the past hard work. Then we turned our tassels to find we were no longer students of Lincoln High School, but Alumni anxious and eager to travel down the roads put before us, wanting to see what is in store for us - our friends and ourselves. Elected to lead us our senior year were Donald Knoch, President, Virgil Stroia, Vice President, Linda Wortman, Secretary, and Larry Mottice, Treasurer. 12 ALICE ABEL - Commercial - Library Service I, 2, 3, Chorus I, Second Choir 2, 3, Choir 4. Joyce Wolcott is Our cheerleaders carry Lincoln's banner across the field after the last game of a victorious season. 53 Sophomore officers: Kay Miller, Secretary, Jeanne Wilson, President, Jerry lyke, Vice President, and George Saimes, Treasurer, take time out in the library. After one year of studying and working hard we became sophomores! No longer were we a part of that lost race known as freshmen. Now we were able to sell elevator passes and direct fresh- men to the swimming pool! We chose to lead us this year: Jeanne Wilson, President, Jerry Lyke, Vice President, Kay Miller, Secretary, and George Saimes, Treasurer. Taking part in many extra-curricular activities and making a place for ourselves in our studies, we began to feel as though we were really making worthwhile contributions to Lincoln High School. 54 we .V f?3 2 M xiii S is rrrr A ' X 1 it I E Q-f .QF r,,. a n , J , Q57 i G 11155 ,. ierr f S Janet Abel Richard Ackley Jerry Allen Larry Alton Don Bailey Bobby Baker Pat Baird . Waiting to cheer the lions onio the field are our cheerleaders. 61 gmt 'Hur ' Preparing for a busy day at school are the officers of the Freshman Class! Prosic'e..t, John Dickerson, Secretary, Charlene Owen, Treasurer, Linda Johnston, and Vice President, Nick Zazula. As freshmen, we iourneyed to Lincoln with the curiosities typical of freshmen. The first day in high school we made friends, and as the year moved on we began to get into the swing of high school life. Many of us attended the social functions such as dances and those memorable games at the stadium and fieldhouse in order to prepare ourselves for that big event, the class party. We took an active part in student council, band, and other organizations. Homework wasn't so bad after all, now that we have learned to study! Guiding us through our first by-path were: John Dickerson, President, Nick Zazula, Vice President, Charlene Owen, Secretary, and Linda Johnston, Treasurer. 62 t gf -QS 1 an , .Q- ., ,AH 'Q . The Lincoln A Cappella Choir followed this motto again, thus giving to the school another year filled with popular, religious, and classical music. lllustrating the popular music, the a cappellc: choir presents each year a spring variety show called The May Fiesta . This spring spectacular is filled with song and dance routines to be matched by none. The fame of the a cappella's May Fiesta has spread far and wide, and the T956 edition was the best of them all. Presenting the religious music, the a cappella choir or one of its many soloists provide the music for Lincoln's chapel services. The choir is invited and performs at many religious, social, and civic functions. At Christmas they tour the halls singing carols. For classical music the a cappella choir provides a Christmas concert which features songs written by many of the great composers of masterpieces. Because of their great versatility, members of the Lincoln A Cappella Choir have gained great fame for the school and themselves. B8 ENSEMBLE First Row: C. Dennis, S. Simodi, P. Ludwig, L. The T956-57 Lincoln High School basket- ball team soared to great heightsg as, for the second straight year, new records were established. The veteran Lions won four teen of its seventeen games breaking the old record of eleven wins, set last year. After an easy victory over Louisville in the opening game, they were matched against the respected quintets of Orange and Sebring and emerged victorious. They won over Timken, Minerva, and Central Catholic for six straight victories. Being rated sixth in the State, the Lions suffered their first loss at the hands of the fourth rated McKinley Bulldogs. The Lions failed to shoot with the accuracy shown in the previous games. The cagers continued to win again with impressive victories over Barberton, Cha- grin Falls, Alliance and Mansfield Madison. The Barberton game was an 83 to 81 over- time thriller. They were then dropped for the second time by a tall, veteran and A vain effort by D. Teel to put the Lions ahead. highly ranked Kent Roosevelt team. Leo's boys bounced back to defeat Wooster but lost a close 69-67 decision to the Wildcats on the South floor. North Canton proved easy prey for them as they warmed up for the Massillon game. The Lions overcame the underdog role to grab a one point victory over the Tigers. The season finished on a high note as they trounced Lehman for their fourteenth vic- tory. A new record for total points was esta- blished as they poured 1172 points through the hoops for a fine average of 69.6 per game. The rebounding ability of L. Ellison and D. Teel and fine shooting of B. Herrod, R. Worstell, and G. Copeland was mainly re- sponsible for the team's success. Coach Ken Newlon should be proud of his fine record. The 1956-57 team will long be remembered in the halls of L.H.S. and the records they set will be the goals for future teams. 9 N iiiiti'l A is cssssre ss so cgtygt ... 6 B. Youngstown Rayen The Lincoln Lions opened the 1956 grid campaign with a 28 to 12 victory over Rayen, one of Youngstown's better teams. After showing great power and perfection in the preview the week before, the Lions looked a little ragged in the encounter. Lincoln battled to 13 first downs compared to Rayen's 6 with Ellison, Worstell, Cosen- tino, and Farrall each scoring a touchdown. Massillon The Lincoln Lions went down to defeat at the hands of the Massillon Tigers 26 to 13 in one of the finest games ever played. Out-playing the Tigers statistically with 14 first downs to 8, the Lions had a 52 yard touchdown by Cosentino nullified. In the second quarter they fumbled on the Tigers one. As the final gun went off the Lions were again on Massillon's one. Although losing, the Lions should be commended for their fine playing. Lehman The Polar Bears were an easy push over for our Lions. Three advantages, exper- ience, weight, and a passing attack, were responsible for our 32 to 6 win. This made the ninth game Lincoln has won out of sixteen intracity meetings. Worstell was the top ball carrier going over for two touchdowns, while Cosentino, Copeland, and Ellison each racked up one. McKinley Going against an undefeated team for the second time in three games, the Lincoln Lions lost a 33 to 14 decision to the state champion McKinley Bulldogs. Lincoln was the first to score with Worstell going over from the four yard line. The Bulldogs led 14 to 7 at intermission. McKinley scored three quick touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game on ice. Lincoln scored the final touchdown in the final quarter on a 33 yard f1ea-f1icker pass from Dinkins to Saimes. D. Cosentino breaks loose for a gain! Canton South Lincoln's first string regulars saw less than half the game in play. The reserves had a chance to show the Lions' up coming power. However, Lincoln's 'old faithfuls came through with the scoring. Cosentino exhibited his running skill while tallying two touchdowns. They were Lincoln's last touchdowns, ending a forty- one yard push and a fifty-nine yard run for Cosentino. Worstell romped fifty-two yards for his touchdown and kicked three of the extra points. Farrall and Ellison also scored. The Lions' scoring ended in the third quarter, while the Wildcats scored in the final quarter. Columbus North Putting on a fine exhibition of foot- ball, the Lions roared to a 26 to 0 win, over a highly rated Columbus North team. Ronnie Worstell was outstanding in his play as he came through time and again in the clutch and scored two touchdowns. Dinkins also passed to Ellison for another touchdown. The Lions held the Columbus squad on the five yard line three times which emphasized their fine team effort. Lincoln was the only team to defeat North in the '56 grid season. Alliance Lincoln played a good, hard fought foot- ball game against Alliance and came out the victors by a 19 to T3 score. The Lions iumped to a T9 to O lead in the first three quarters. Cosentino plunged over for our first touchdown in the first quarter after a fifty-seven yard drive. Again in the second quarter he ended a long drive for another touchdown. Worstell climaxed our scoring in the third quarter going over from the seven yard line. Alliance rallied to make their two touchdowns in the final quarter. G. Copeland digs in for the attack! Central Catholic The Lions easily whipped the Crusaders while working efficiently as a unit, but some individuals sparked the playing. R. Ferry bulldozed through for two touch- downs, while G. Copeland, J. Farrall, and L. Ellison each had one. C. Dinkins' passes were as beautiful as Ellison's almost impossible catches. T. Din- kins' three extra points were finely made. R. Worstell demonstrated his power running with most of the Lions plays and first downs. Lincoln Reserves saw action in the third quarter while leading 28 to 0. Central then scored their only touchdown, but Lin- coln finished the scoring with another. Two good blocks put R. Worstell in the open! Worstell proved himself one of the Lincoln all time greats. In 30 carries he averaged 8.6 yards per carry. He scored two touchdowns and kicked 4 extra points. Farrall, Cosentino, and Dinkins also hit paydirt. Ellison made some beautiful catches and played a fine game on defense. Lincoln's powerful running and solid line was iust too much for Timken. Baseball The Lions 1956 baseball team ended the sea- son with only two wins in seven games. The team composed of underclassmen could never quite get rolling. Out of the fourteen games scheduled only seven were played because of the rainy weather. Leading the Lions in the batting department was first baseman Chuck Dinkins with an aver- age ot .430. He also led the team in runs batted in. Coach William Hothem is hoping that with every member of the team returning in the spring of 1957, they can come through with an undefeated season. lt'S U hit fOr V- SfI'0iGl C. Szostak, V. Stroia, and J. Hossler. V. Stroia proves that l.incoln's basketball talent does not Stop with the varsity. 114 Intramural basketball reached its peak at the championship game on February nine- teenth. Vying for the rotating trophy, pre- sented to the winner, were teams from senior homerooms 302-03 and iunior homeroom 310. Their playing was evenly matched for three quarters, but in the final period the 302-03 Jags surged ahead to keep the trophy in a senior homeroom. The seniors were pressed until the fourth quarter when the Blue Dots from 310 didn't keep up the pace set by their opponents. The seniors were sparked by the shooting accuracy of Jerry Hossler and Vigil Stroia, who both tallied sixteen points. Pete Tkocz and Bob Williams scored ten and nine points respectively for the losing quintet. Quarter scores were as follows: 302-03 12 22 31 48 310 11 22 31 38 The winners compiled a respectable season record. After losing their first game they emerged victorious in their next six games. A new scoring mark of eighty-one points was established for total points in one game. CLASS B CHAMPS Claiming the Class B Championship in intramural basketball is homeroom 201. Members of the team are: lkneelingl T. Novak, T. Okey, and J. Neibel, lstandingi P. Needs, P. Olson, G. Davis, and D. Paushek. Comprising the Class B League in intra- mural basketball were teams representing freshman and sophomore homerooms. Room 201 de- feated 108 by the score of 36-28, Although the Monteloubers led through- out the game the winner could have been interchanged by all indications given by the nine points tallied in the opening quarter. ln the second period the Monte- loubers awoke to enioy a 20-11 lead at the end of the half. Pat Needs contributed eighteen points to lead his team, and high man for the Magics was Earl Herbruck with eleven. Quarter scores had 201 leading: 201 6 20 28 36 108 3 11 19 28 The winners compiled a 5-1 season re- cord and also claimed the season indi- vidual scoring mark of sixty-seven points set by Tom Okey. In America you have a right to work anywhere you please. Lots of people in other countries wish they had this same freedom. If you lived behind the Iron Curtain-or under that kind of government-you'd be expendable manpower, nothing else. You'd work where you were told' to work, at any job the state said you should do. You'd have no choice. You couldn't hope for better working conditions, criticize the boss, or pick up and leave. You know. . . it's really something, this freedom to work where you please. It's a precious heritage, part of being an American. And doesn't it give you the shudders to realize that there are people who'd like to take this right-put us all under Iron Curtain working conditions? Let's not let it happen... Keep your rights, all of them, including this one. Speak up for them. Resist any movement to take them away. Don't let anyone talk down your freedom.
