CUSTER, Principal Another four-year cycle brings a high school generation to the part- ing of the Ways. No class ever Went forth from high school halls in a more historic year than this one of 1951. A school is no better than the product it puts forth. For the most part, the class of 1951 has blended harmoniously with the program and activities of Lincoln High School. Through the pages of the LIONIAN, I wish to express my appreciation for your cooperation. The graduates of a school are the proof of our efforts and We feel that we can long be proud of you. We have reason to believe that they will always contribute to the glory of their Alma Mater, Lincoln High School, in Whatever they do. -On behalf of the students of Lincoln, I wish to acknowledge our ap- preciation for the fine supervision Mr. Custer has given us throughout the scholastlc year. He has been interested in all our activities and given us bothaencouragement and censure according to our actions. He has suc- ceeded 1n adjusting himself to Lincoln and has aided us in adjusting to our new schedule and rules. 6 Q.. ,.i. 1 A, BOARD UF EDUCATION Left fo right: John F. Roos, Walter H. How timid this year's graduation class were as freshmeng however, after becoming city football Champs their first year, they were certain they had contributed greatly to the prestige of Lincoln High School. As sophomores, this class was feeling quite at home at Lincoln and the Junior-Senior Prom took the spotlight the next year. Their senior year brought many changes-the absence of our be- loved Mr. Meyer and his replacement by Mr. Custer-Mr. Eibling to re- place Mr. Vincent-and a nine-period schedule. The field-house, a great new city project, was completed for the enjoyment of all schools. From their four years' experience, this class has a great deal to take with them through life, whatever path they follow. Leading the senior class this year were president-Joe Dogolig Vice President-Doris Trottg Secretary-Kay Young, and Treasurer-Ronald Kuster. The class advisors were Mr. Scherff, Mrs. Wagner, Miss Fager, Mr. Harter, Miss Hopkins, and Mr. Andrews. Many meetings like this one were held in planning the annual Prom and the Junior Party, Sweetheart Swirlf' Bill, Rich, Cookie, and Jean worked diligently with the results that these two importnat dances were, complete successes. Even though Chemistry kept this year's industrious juniors busy burning midnight oil, they were well represented in Alexis, Linion, and National Honor. Long hours of practice produced one of the best plays ever given at Lincoln. Our Miss Brooks, with Mary Ann Horner in the title role and a superb supporting cast gave the record size audience a real evening of entertainment. The boys showed their athletic ability in both basketball and foot- ball while the girls, not to be outdone, participated in the thrilling Army- Navy game and groaned loudly of their aches and pains after the annual Girls' Leaders tryouts. Only one more year with the Class of 1952. 48 HOME ROOM 307 FIRST ROW: Julia Hartman, Connie Majors, Donna Evans, Janet Rothermel, Lorraine Rhodes, Nancy Bentivegna, Nancy Swearingen, Barbara Hursh, Twilla White. One of the outstanding events of this year was the big snow. After a vacation of a whole week, our hard Working students, as Well as their teachers found it difficult to come back and get into the swing of things. ' As you can see the sophomores chose expert snow-ballers to lead them in their second year at Lincoln. They also proved to be capable planners and the sophs had the time of their lives at their gala party. When the curtain rose on the 1951 Band Concert, I was able to spot several members of the Class of '53 giving out with their best, happily anticipating the Military Ball. Long hours of practice ibut I bet they enjoyed itl were put into perfecting the May Fiesta. It was, as in the past, as spectacular and appealing as a Broadway Musical. Sandra Harris FRESHMAN CLASS . . . . . This year's freshies started their career by electing four very capable oflicers. Sandra has the unique honor of being one of the few feminine presidents in the history of Lincoln. Their class party was well attended and very typical of most be- ginning dances. The boys, just a little shy and unsure of their brand new two-step needed a little coaxing, but after they found out how much fun it was, they didn't want to go home until the last chord was sounded. The frosh football and basketball teams turned in excellent records and five Freshman Amazons received berths on Army and Navy Re- serves. The Y-Teen and Hi-Y formals held quite a thrill for these new- comers to Lincoln, but they soon learned to feel at home waltzing to the strains of some top tune at beautiful Moonlight Ballroom. Next year the halls Won't seem so long, the auditorium so huge, or the homework so difficult. 62 HOME ROOM l-F FIRST ROW: Barbara Lung, Deborah Featheringham, Vivian Haddad, Carol Ackley, June Fuelling, Shirley Os- borne, Nancy Deardorff, Evelyn English. Cassel- LINCOLN 12 - 0 TIMKEN Our Lincoln Lions presented Coach Fife with something he hasn't experienced since he assumed the role of head football master. The gift of a 12--0 triumph over the Timken Trojans represented a three-fold accomplishment. It was the first opening game decision for the jovial Lion tamerg it also marked his initial decision over the intra-city rival: and last, the victory equalled the entire previous victory output Fife has enjoyed in the two seasons. LINCOLN 0 -- 40 MASSILLON Once again the Lions met with Massillon's Tigers, rated number one in Ohio at the time. Much bigger and faster than Lincoln. the Bengals took a first quar- ter lead of 7-0. As the second period started, the spirited Lions tightened up on defense and their offense began moving. Massillon's massive line held at the crucial moments, however, and Lincoln failed to score. The Lions threatened to score again in the final stanza as Vic Schoeppner broke away on a long jaunt deep into enemy territory only to lose the ball on a fumble. Massillon scored a total of six times in the whole game adding four extra points to make a total of 40 to Lincoln's 0. 73 ALEX BLEAHU BILL BUSH JOE DOGOLI BILL GROETZ BILL OEFFINGER VIC SCHOEPPNER TOM TAYLOR BILL -my ,og VESA sm WILLIAMSON PAUL soLoT 74 DAVE CASSEL RON CHISMAR ROGER CHRISTIAN JIM CRAWFORD DON DAVIS DARYL DENT RICH HARTZEL BILL mnvls so LoMsAnm BILL MOTTICE BILL QUEEN 75 LINCOLN 14 - 13 LEHMAN We regained our domination over Lehman's Polar Bears in a thrill- ing 14--13 triumph, but only after the Lions set up an impregnable barrier to thwart our foes in a plunge-for-point attempt shortly before the game ended. The Bears electing to run the ball instead of trying to repeat their earlier successful place kick, handed the ball to halfback Arnold who was met by a host of Lions in the center of the line and downed way short of the goal. Thus the injury-riddled corps averted the third straight tie in the bitter 10-game rivalry. LINCOLN 0 - 32 MCICINLEY The Lions suffered their second setback of the '50 season at the hands of one of Lincoln's oldest rivals, the McKinley Bulldogs. McKinley, rated as one of the state's best, was held to a 6-0 lead until the closing seconds of the first half when the Bulldogs got their second tally. The second half was all McKinley even though Lincoln fought with an undying effort. The Lions penetrated deep into Bulldog territory more than once but each opportunity was nullified by penalties. McKinley scored once again in the third quarter and twice in the fourth. At the final gun the score read, McKinley 32, Lincoln 0. LINCOLN 6 - 27 YOUNGSTOWN SOUTH Youngstown South, the only eleven Lincoln managed to beat in 1949, squared matters in a 27--6 romp over the visiting Lions. Lincoln, whose spirited bid in the first quarter for a touchdown was squelched by a pass interception on the host's 22 yard line, scored on a 20 yard center smash by back Vic Schoeppner. The play was set up when tackle Bill Groetz covered a fumbled punt on the South 25 just seconds before the third quarter ended. 76 l l 1 l ....J RESERVE FOOTBALL FIRST ROW: D. ' ' ' LINCOLN 0 -- 52 BARBERTON The Lions went into the Barberton game with the intention of toppl- ing the powerful Magics from their berth as Ohio's number three team. Barberton, under the leadership of former Lincoln mentor, J unie Ferral, had other ideas and proved it to the tune of 52-0 in their favor. Lincoln's main scoring threat came in the second quarter after a pass interception by Bill Bush. Jarvis then tossed a long aerial to Bill Toy who carried the pigskin to the Magics two. Time ran out and the half ended nullifying the threat. LINCOLN 6 - 20 SANDUSKY Sparked once again by the running fullback Vic Schoeppner, the Lincoln Lions sank their teeth into another unbeaten giant at Sandusky and make a great showing before succumbing, 20-6. Lincoln battled the Blue Streaks on even terms for three quarters, trailing by the margin of an extra point, 7-6. Lincoln couldn't get much of an offensive started after the touch- down although their alignment held the opposition at bay until the final period. The loss was the fifth for the Lions against two wins. All the losses against unbeaten elevens. LINCOLN 25 - 6 CHANEY Lincoln literally swam to their third victory of the season as they downed the Chaney Cowboys in a constant rainfall. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Lions who also rolled up their biggest score of the season. The first half was a game of give and take as both teams sought to become accustomed to the mud. With less than two minutes remaining, Vic Schoeppner tossed to Cassel for a Lion T. D. and the same two con- nected for the extra point. In the second half Lincoln continued to rush ahead on three touch- down runs, all by Schoeppner. His efforts, however, were aided by Junior Dogoli and the fine blocking of the Lincoln line. 78 ' LQ! LINCOLN 0 - 27 ALLIANCE A fighting but outclassed Lincoln eleven went down in defeat before the crushing play of the Alliance Aviators. Although the Lions failed to advance the ball beyond the enemy 20 yard stripe, at least four Lincoln players making their final appearance in Lion uniforms came through with excellent performances. They Were: Alex Bleahu, Vic Schoeppner, Joe Dogoli, and Bill Bush. The first half was played on almost even terms with the Lions hold- ing Alliance to one tally. In the second stanza, however, the Aviator power came to life as they scored three more times to put the game on ice. 79 ,, FOOTBALL COACHES MANAGERS TOP ROW: Lett to right: Jim Wilson, Guy Bertram, Jim Mitchell, Bob Holland. BAYLESS The one-hundred-six piece Lincoln Band again thrilled thousands of spectators as talented director, A. Jerd Bayless, produced one of his finest organizations since coming to Lincoln seven years ago. Something new in band concerts was presented the second week of school. The Autum Serenade featured the Dance Band, Majorettes, a chorus line, and various novelty acts, as the school year was brought in with a band. Later, the Marching Band won statewide acclaim for its splendid showing on the football field. An all- expense paid trip to Sandusky topped the football seas- on's events for band members. On March first the annual Winter Concert was held. Mr. Bayless gave this concert a decidedly popular touch by choosing such favorites as Dark Eyes , Stardust , Joshua , and several solo numbers. The following week- end the band members were rewarded for their hard work during the year with the lavish Military Ball spon- sored by the Band Parents Club. Other organizations of the band included the Lion- airs, who played for various dances throughout the city and the Cadet Band, made up of younger musicians at Lincoln. 103 4 PICCOLO: Hallie Hall FLUTE: 'Ruth Foreman. With the addition of Memorial Fieldhouse to Canton's athletic program came the addition of the Pep Band at Lincoln. Thi's 40 piece group provided Lincoln's basketball fans with music between quarters and the students of Lincoln had the distinction of becoming the first to give a program between halves at the Fieldhouse. The first show was given during the intermission of the game with Alliance. Subsequent shows fol- lowed with the Timken, Massillon and Lehman games. A great deal of credit should go to Mr. Bayless for his pioneering of what eventually will become a regular practice of all schools. 107 Z THE BAND ROOM More Noise At The Fieldhouse Practice Session A much needed addition was made to Lincoln's musical facilities with this modern new band practice room which was completed in Novem- ber. Some innovations are fluorescent lights, risers and large storage space. 108 SENIOR CLASS PLAY - MOTHER IS A FRESHMAN ' THE CAST Mrs. Abigail Abbott .... Susan .............. Mrs. Miller ........ Communists are all kinds of people in all walks of life and of all races. A Communist is anyone who believes in the Rus- sian system of govemment, whereby those who govern own everything and control all the activ- ities of all the people. A Communist is loyal only to Soviet Russia. As a member of the Communist Party he is dedi- cated for life to the protection of the U.S.S.R. and to the establishment of Communism through- out the world. A Communist will usually deny that he is a Com- munist. There are many Communists who are not in reality card-carrying members of the party. But both types of Communists carry on the same TIIE TIMKEII RULLE cnurou s,oHlo - work, although the second type cannot let it be known that he is a member. His real value to the party is in indoctrinating those unsuspecting people in key positions with govemment agencies, schools, unions and churches with Communistic philosophies. When a Communist goes to work on you tell him that you are on to him and his dirty game. Tell him, further, that you think it your patriotic duty to make his activities known to others and to the police. Tell him that you know no tactics are too low for a Communist: lying, cheating, betrayal, ruin and even murder. But be sure to tell him, too, that America is on the alert and that his scheme for world domination is doomed to failure.
