'QQ HAROLD S VINCENT Our Supf 1 mtendenf The Gold Rush to California rn 49 was a srgnrhcant event in American history It blazed new tr ails across the continent and made possible the permanent settlement and development of the great Pacrfrc Coast In that vear by foot by clipper ship and by prairie schooner a hundred thousand people made their way to the West in search of gold They and those who followed them remained to bulld cities and found an emprre These Americans were a hardy lot They were men and women of courage 1n1t1at1ve imagination and strong determination They were completely self reliant They faced their problems wlthout asking any odds They built in to then part of our country the elements of na tional greatness. To such people in every generation we owe a debt of Gratitude. The Forty Niners of this centu ry are now in our schools.
