The principal is the school's anchor man. like the one at the end ol the line in a tug ol war. he must dig in his heels and resist the drag from the other end of the rope when everyone else is slipping. llltimately. the responsibility for all that concerns the sc hool. even the most trivial detail, comes to him. Ile cannot himself lit the many cogs of our complex school machine into each other. It is his task. rather, to see that the machine moves, moves vvhere and hovv it should, and moves vvithout nlishap. ll. C. Mardis has accomplished more than this. his routine task. in the tvvo years he has been here. Ile has done nluch to oil the nlechanism ol the organ- ization. hy such nleans as instituting the lour lunch periods. improving lockers and devising a lletter system ol record- ing attendance. and has laid a nevv elnphasis on scholarship. In appreciation for the past and antici- pation ol the future. this volume is dedicated to him.
