20 reatioe Sewing QQ Gourmet Cooking Classes Home Economics rumbled with excitement when two new classes were brought to Lincoln. One was the Creative Sewing class. Here girls learned creative stitchery, knitting, and crocheting. They made scarves, Shawls, belts, leather purses, and wove their own rugs. This class was taught first semester by Mrs. Chapman, and second semester by Mrs. Mitzner. The other new class was Gourmet Foods. This time the boys got in the act, too, when they con- jured up elegant dishes of seafood, casseroles, fon- dues, and desserts. In clothing, girls can start in Clothing 1 by learning the basics of sewing and then progressing at one's own ability. Other clothing classes were Tailoring, where girls made their own coats, and then on to Clothing 6, where students learned the new sewing on knit fabrics. In the Foods Department, taught by Mrs. Nixon and Mrs. Halsey, students learned meal planning, nutrition, and cooked regularly in the kitchens. In Home Management, girls learned the ba- sics of child development, interior decorating, home planning, which prepares them to be homemakers in the future. Robert Ghee checks on the white sauce while Steve Pitzler mixes up the baking powder biscuits. ln Clothing 6, Maureen Perez and Holly Corbett lay out fabric to make knit tops. Mrs. VanRooyen demonstrates how to prepare and serve tongue in Gourmet Foods.

19 oreign altares: Goal of Language lasses Debbie Tye swings Pinata while Steve Anderson Spanish class. trys to break it Lincolnls Foreign Language Department was able to broaden itls horizons this year by making use of the two exchange students that came to Lincoln. The exchange students Guadalupe and Eveles both agreed that this year had been an experience that neither of them will forget. When asked what she thought the purpose of the language department was, Mrs. Sarmiento stated, MAmistad entre nacionesf' This translates friendship between nations. Lincoln offers German, French and Spanish. All of the foreign language courses include infor- mation pertaining to the various cultural traits of the country and some history of the countries. Lindy Spray, a student in Spanish eight, stated, It helps to know the background of the people of a nation when youre learning a language. It helps you to understand why the people of that country feel the way they do. German students take test in Dr. Steiger's class.
