Since the cornerstone was laid fifty years ago, in 1913, Lincoln High School, then known as Lincoln Park High School, has become a highly respected tradition within the community as well as the city. ln all walks of life, there are individuals who have stepped from Lincoln into the future possessing not only an education learned from books, but also the virtues which the school stands for and which are engraved above the entrances. These are knowl- 2 edge, grace, simplicity, iustice, goodwill, courage, and reverence. The high standards of teaching and preparation of young people to meet the future have become traditions inseparable from the school itself. Therefore on this fiftieth anniversary we wish to dedicate the annual to all the past students and teachers who have contributed to its outstanding reputation.

ooooo In the perspective of history, early efforts at progress often appear feeble or crude, yet we must realize that the present must always build upon the past, and that today's achievements would never have been possible without the early aspirations, decisions, and pioneering efforts. Certainly the con- trasts between 'Then' and 'Now' are many, but many readers of the 1963 Lincolnian will find that this book will arouse memories and nostalgia. Perhaps most significant are the inscriptions over the entrances to Lincoln, and the quotation on the cornerstone. Inspired by Bishop Keator, the in- scriptions Reverence, Justice, Goodwill, Simplicity, Grace, and Courage welcome students and are symbolic of the ideals of democracy which the pub- lic schools aim to build. It was a school board mem- ber, the Reverend Harry Hendley, who suggested the cornerstone inscription, 'Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom, yea, with all thy get- ting get understandingf No better advice or chal- lenge could be presented to those who attended Lincoln High during its first 50 years-nor during its next half century.
