Par- ticularly grievous at the end of the term, however, was the loss of six skilled teachers who chose retire- ment. They were Mrs. Lois Legg, Mathematics, Mrs. Jennie Maclntyre, Bus. Education, Miss Helen Clarke, Department Head, Health, Mrs. Mildred' Olts, Bus. Education, Mr. Herb Ellingson, Department Head, Industrial Arts, and Mr. Ed Schwarz, Social Science and Athletic Director. Although the contributions of these teachers to the education of a generation of Tacomans is impossible to measure, their pupils, nevertheless, are represented in every phase of community life.

Mr. James Walters com- pleted a year's leave of absence with the Physics Science Study Committee. He was named by that group as one of forty outstanding physics instructors in the U. S. Mr. Robert Nichols left at year's end as a recipient of a NDEA grant for a year's work at Arizona State University. Miss Nancy Glaser was awarded a summer scholarship at Willamette Uni- versity in history, economics, and government. Mr. Norm Mayer also was awarded a summer scholar- ship at the University of Washington in radiobiology.
