Torgeson. S. Dursma, enate Again Becomes True Governin Body Lincoln's student senate set as its goal this year the refestablishment of the senate as the true gov' erning body of Lincoln. To carry out this theme, student participation was keynoted. Many new committees were formed to perform tasks previous' ly done by members of the student council. Senate representatives, elected by their individual homerooms, met each Tuesday during sixth period to discuss proposed legislation. Among the measures instituted in this year's senate was a school ac' tivities calendar, which will be placed in the hall to inform Lincolnites of coming school events. A senate organization comf mittee studied ways by which Senate Officers-Susan Gadbow. first semester secretary: Marilce Andersen, president: Elaine mester secretary. senate could be improved, and came up with many suggestions that will help to make that body more representative of the students' wishes. The success of Lincoln's float in the daffodil pa' rade was due to the efforts of a senate committee formed for that purpose. Lincoln's senatefsponsored Xfray drive won out over Sta' dium, with 19 Abe homerooms attaining 100 per cent in the contest. Presiding over senate meet' ings was Marilee Anderson. Adviser tudent Council Becomes Full-Tiine C ass Establishment of Student Council as a reg' ular class with scholastic credit this year made it possible for the members to meet every day while working toward their goal of greater stuf dent participation in Lincoln's government. Miss Katherine Bernard conducted the new class with the assistance of Mrs. Helen Feutz and Principal Kenneth Flora. The first concern of the fledgling legislators was the sale of ASL activity cards. Lincoln topped Stadium as they vied for honors in the sales contest, and in payment for losing the conf test, Stadium presented an assembly at Lincoln. This was the first of several exchange assemblies presented during the year. Other exchange shows by the Council were given by Aberdeen and Clympia high schools. Reorganization of the pep staff in an effort to promote better school spirit highlighted Student Council legislation as Frank Bowers was named adviser of a pep group consisting of four cheer' leaders and four song queens. Dew Drop Inn to the Council Dance after the Hoquiam game, Lincolnites were urged. Those who followed the suggestion were ref warded by the music of the Roy CummingsfTom DoanefLyman Peterson Trio. The beginnings of a tradition were set in mo' tion by the Council as they conducted a weekf long observance of Linco1n's birthday, complete with a beardfgrowing contest and selection of an Abe and Mary Lincoln, the two students who best typified the spirit of Lincoln. The fesf tivities were climaxed with an impressive Linf coln Day assembly. P-T.A. improves Home- cliool Relations To foster a closer understanding between par' ents and the schools, the Lincoln ParentfTeacher Association set as their theme for this year, It's Hi Time to Understand Your High School. Carrying out this theme, they presented at each meeting an exhibition by one of the school def partments. In six meetings during the year the functions of the English, business education, industrial arts, social science, guidance, and home eco' nomics departments were explained by the inf Stt'LlCt0rS from those departments. Actual class' room procedure was revealed to the parents when they were given the opportunity to tour the departments on display. 393 new members, of which 143, or almost half, were men, were the result of the fall mem' bership campaign. Usually most members are mothers. Parents had a chance to meet the teachers of their sons and daughters at the Lincoln Backftof School Night November 15. They visited their children's classrooms and were able to chat with the teachers. Admission of the whole family to the Lincoln' Olympia football game for a dollar and a memf bership dance marked the PfTA family night festivities. The annual PfTA assembly featured slides and a lecture by Sheldon Brooks, jr. The mountain' climbing former Lincolnite showed photographs taken of his recent ascent of University Peak in Alaska. The purpose of the assembly was to raise money from the rummage collected at the assembly. The profits will be used to cover PfTA expenses next year. Capably serving as PfTA officers were Mrs. J. A. Scott, president, Mrs. Lee Wills, first vice' presidentg Mrs. Athyleen Nicholson, second vicefpresidentg Miss Alice Grimes, third vice' president, Mrs. A. C.
